Race 1: Rochelle Lynch Happy 50th 2mw H'cap - 1000m
JUST A PICCOLO (B. El-Issa) was slow to begin and a short distance after the start was steadied when tightened for room between MEMORABLE MOMENT (L. Cassidy) and BY THE BY (T. Bell), both of which shifted ground slightly.
Passing the 800m, FRISCO LIGHTS (J. Byrne) became awkwardly placed on the heels of LIGHTFEET LADY (K. Matheson) and when being restrained shifted out abruptly.
For a short distance approaching the 400m, SPOT THE ROCK (R. McMahon), when attempting a run to the inside of LIGHTFEET LADY, became awkwardly placed at that horse's heels and had to be steadied.
Approaching the 200m, SPOT THE ROCK had difficulty securing clear running and had to move LIGHTFEET LADY wider on the track in order to secure clear running to the outside of the heels of BUCKMORE (R. Thompson).
NICKIERA (C. Munce), which raced 3 wide, had a tendency to hang out.
Race 2: Lilivale Stud Class 6 H'cap - 1200m
A. Holt, rider of POSTE RESTANTE, was reprimanded for presenting to the enclosure with incorrect colours.
Correct weight was delayed to allow A. Holt, rider of the 4th placegetter, POSTE RESTANTE, to view the stewards patrol footage in the straight to ascertain if he had grounds to lodge a protest against PURE PURRFECTION being declared 2nd. Subsequently A. Holt declined to proceed.
BALKUIN (T. Harrison), which was fractious in the barriers, jumped awkwardly and blundered. At the same stage, BALKUIN received heavy contact from BRIBIE (G. Goold), which further unbalanced BALKUIN.
ALDINI (B. El-Issa) overraced at the heels of BALKUIN for some distance after passing the 1000m.
Near the 200m, POSTE RESTANTE (A. Holt) attempted a run between PURE PURRFECTION (R. Wiggins) and BALKUIN where there was insufficient room and in doing so came into contact with BALKUIN. POSTE RESTANTE then became awkwardly placed at the heels of PURE PURRFECTION for a short distance and then again shifted out to obtain clear running, again making contact with BALKUIN. A post race veterinary examination of BALKUIN failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
When questioned regarding the seemingly poor performance of BALKUIN, T. Harrison stated that the horse had trialled well leading into today's event and she was hopeful of a forward showing. She added that after beginning very awkwardly, BALKUIN travelled only fairly in the position outside the leader and disappointed her, in its effort over the concluding stages. T. Harrison further stated that she believed the horse would take benefit from today's performance and believed BALKUIN may have run out of condition over the concluding stages. Trainer B. Hill informed stewards he was very disappointed with the performance of BALKUIN, advising that the horse worked and trialled well leading into today's race, however could offer no tangible explanation for the performance of the horse. Mr Hill undertook to report to stewards any abnormalities that become apparent in the days following the race that may have had a bearing on the performance. A post race veterinary examination of BALKUIN failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 3: Harry And Amelia Cahill Class 6 H'cap - 1600m
As P. Holmes was to be overweight, K. Wharton was substituted as the rider of HOLLYWOOD BOUND and WILL'S CHOICE (Race 6). P. Holmes was fined $300.
Jockey K. Wharton, rider of HOLLYWOOD BOUND, reported he had difficulty securing clear running until inside the 100m. He further explained that approaching the home turn, his mount was travelling well to the inside of COSMONAUT (R. McMahon) and as there was no opportunity to move wider the only option he had was to progress forward behind EQUISSENTIAL (M. Vance) and angle back to the inside of that runner when BALLYBIT (T. Harrison), which appeared to be under pressure approaching the home turn, lost ground. K. Wharton went on to explain BALLYBIT maintained its position for a considerable part of the straight and EQUISSENTIAL did not improve forward as he was expecting and as a result he was held up for clear running until he was able to switch across the heels of COSMONAUT near the 100m. After viewing the patrol footage which supported the report of K. Wharton, stewards noted his comments.
C. Munce, rider of SIR KNOX, which performed below expectations, explained that the only real excuse he could offer for the performance was the firm surface today and the slow tempo of the race in the early stages. A post race veterinary examination of SIR KNOX revealed a laceration to the near hind pastern.
When questioned regarding the performance of ELLAWISDOM, A. Taylor explained that the horse travelled quite well in the early stages however from a point passing the 500m, the horse was reluctant to stretch out and was not competitive over the latter part of the race. Trainer T. Thomas advised stewards that ELLAWISDOM had reached the end of its preparation and on the basis that he spelled the horse immediately, stewards took no further action. A post race veterinary examination of ELLAWISDOM failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 4: Operation Smile Australia Benchmark 80 H'cap - 2200m
Near the 350m, ESCOFFIER (J. Byrne) shifted out around the heels of MALING (B. Richardson) to obtain clear running and in doing so made contact with with FIFTH COLUMN (S. Bogenhuber).
G. Killen reported that CLONMACNISE did not stretch out on the firm surface.
Race 5: Mason & Oberhardt F&M NMW H'cap - 1400m
BUSINESS DAY (T. Bell) was slow to begin. (3L) Connections were advised that a warning would be placed on the horse regarding its barrier manners.
ELUSIVE STORM (A. Coome) and GOTTA BE LUCKY (A. Allen) were both tightened for room at the start between WISH UPON A STAR (B. El-Issa), which shifted out after being taken out by KISTAMON (D. Browne), and GOTITALLWRONG (R. Wiggins), which shifted in after being bumped by FLYING FUJI (K. Matheson). In this incident, both GOTTA BE LUCKY and ELUSIVE STORM lost their positions.
LITTLE ANTICS (J. Byrne) jumped away awkwardly.
Approaching the 1100m, DANE PRINCESS (B. Richardson) shifted in despite the efforts of its rider, tightening the BROOKTON TIARA (A. Holt) and ELUSIVE STORM.
A short distance later, FLYING FUJI shifted in and away from ELLYTHEA (L. Cassidy), resulting in GOTTA BE LUCKY being tightened on to the running rail. In this incident, GOTTA BE LUCKY became unbalanced and blundered. In the circumstances, no further action was taken.
BUSINESS DAY (T. Bell) raced fiercely for a short distance approaching and passing the 1100m, and when restrained got its head up.
For some distance leaving the 1000m, ELUSIVE STORM (A. Coome) raced fiercely at the heels of GOTITALLWRONG (R. Wiggins) and when being restrained got its head up.
Leaving the 500m, BROOKTON TIARA became awkwardly placed on the heels of DANE PRINCESS (B. Richardson) when attempting to shift to that horse's outside to secure clear running.
ELLYTHEA and BUSINESS DAY raced wide throughout.
When asked to explain the disappointing performance of KISTAMON, D. Browne stated that the mare enjoyed a good run trailing the leader however when the pace increased passing the 500m, his mount was left flatfooted and proved extremely disappointing over the concluding stages. He could offer no explanation for the performance of KISTAMON other than to explain that the horse laid out when placed under pressure down the running and may not have appreciated the firm surface today.
A post race veterinary examination of GOTTA BE LUCKY revealed it to have been galloped on on the near hind leg.
Race 6: Kendrick Racing QTIS 3yo H'cap - 1200m
TERONADO (D. Browne) and OLYMPIC ANTHEM (P. Hammersley) jumped awkwardly.
REAL ROCKER (B. El-Issa) was slow to begin.
Approaching the 1000m, PRUSSIAN HEART (J. Byrne) shifted in, taking ROSEY JOAN (B. Richardson) in on to REAL ROCKER, which had improved to that runner's inside quickly, which in turn was taken in on to the hind quarters of CANNYZING (R. Jamieson).
Rounding the turn at the 1000m, ROSEY JOAN (B. Richardson) had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room by GREY COUNTESS (K. Matheson), which shifted in.
Near the 900m, GREY COUNTESS shifted in, taking REAL ROCKER inwards on to CANNYZING, which had to be steadied.
Leaving the 300m when PRUSSIAN HEART (J. Byrne) progressed to the outside of EXCEEDINGLY (T. Bell), EXCEEDINGLY shifted in away from PRUSSIAN HEART and made contact with the running rail.
A post race veterinary examination of FASTNET COVE revealed the horse to be suffering from cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer B. Laming was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness including the results of an ECG must be provide, and FASTNET COVE must trial satisfactorily before racing again.
CANNYZING (R. Jamieson) reported that she was unable to test her mount with her normal vigour due to the horse hanging in under pressure
Stewards questioned P. Hammersley and trainer R. Heathcote in regards to the tactics adopted on OLYMPIC ANTHEM from a point passing the 600m. Of concern to stewards was the fact that OLYMPIC ANTHEM had been restrained to the rear of the field from the wide barrier at the start and when the field reached the 600m, the gelding was travelling strongly and still a length from the second last horse when there appeared to be an opportunity to improve forward to a trailing position behind ROSEY JOAN. Jockey Hammersley explained that he was instructed to ride the horse from a rearward position from the wide barrier and to ensure the horse, which had raced greenly at its first start, was balanced rounding the home turn and was given the opportunity to finish off the race. He added that passing the 600m OLYMPIC ANTHEM was travelling well and he felt there was no benefit in progressing forward wider on the track and, in consideration of all the instructions, he chose to wait until passing the 450m to place his mount under pressure. Trainer Mr R. Heathcote confirmed the instructions and informed stewards that he was satisfied with the manner in which jockey Hammersley had ridden OLYMPIC ANTHEM. After considering the explanation, stewards advised jockey Hammersley that, in their view, he had erred by not allowing OLYMPIC ANTHEM to improve forward from the 600m, particularly given the slow tempo of the event, and in circumstances where OLYMPIC ANTHEM was travelling strongly and that there was an opportunity to take a trailing position behind ROSEY JOAN coming to the corner.
Race 7: Gympie Southside Shop Open H'cap - 1200m
The start of this race was delayed when VINTAGE MOSS had to have both rear plates replated prior to the start.
FUNTANTES (G. Goold) was slow to begin.
EASY RUNNING (P. Hammersley) jumped awkwardly and blundered shortly after the start.
TOKAMAK (A. Holt) was restrained at the start to take a position closer to the fence.
VINTAGE MOSS raced 3 wide throughout without cover.
LATIN NEWS (R. Jamieson) was eased out of the event at the 600m. LATIN NEWS was subsequently euthanased on humane grounds.
Race 8: The "Doctor" CG&E NMW H'cap - 1400m
Prior to the declaration of correct weight stewards considered an application from trainer P. Butterworth to have MAKO SHARK declared a non runner on the basis it was denied a fair start. After taking submissions from the parties involved and viewing the patrol video, stewards were satisfied that the gelding was fractious in the barriers and was slow to begin due to its wayward behavior and therefore declared the horse a runner.
Leaving the 1200m, CHIPP'N AWAY (J. Byrne) shifted in momentarily tightening the running of MANICERO (A. Holt).
BUSY DOIN' NOTHIN' (R. Jamieson) and MOTORISED (A.Coome) raced wide without cover.
PLAYITSTRAIGHT (A. Butler) was held up for clear running until passing the 100m when awkwardly placed at the heels of POWERFUL JET (L. Cassidy) and SLYSERA (C.Munce).
IN THE GENES (T. Harrison) had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early stages of the straight.
At the entrance to the straight, UNO FIVE (R. Thomson) shifted out and made contact with BUSY DOIN' NOTHIN'.
Inside the final 50m, GO THE BLAZE (B. El-Issa) was forced to race in restricted room and the rider was forced to stop riding after improving into a narrow run between PLAYITSTRAIGHT (A. Butler) and POWERFUL JET.
