Race 1: WWW.BRC.COM.AU MAIDEN H’CAP - 1500m
Connections advised that from a more favourable alley, after racing back in the field at its previous start, CLANGORANDA (S. Drake) would be ridden in a midfield position should circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.
CADALORA (C. Munce)and GODS 'N' WARRIORS (L. Rolls) were slow to begin.
RISE OFTHE PHOENIX (A. Allen) began awkwardly.
GODS 'N' WARRIORS raced fiercely in the early and middle stages. Trainer M. Eggleston was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing manners of GODS 'N' WARRIORS.
RISE OFTHE PHOENIX raced wide throughout.
L. Cheshire reported that BONDI BLISS dipped in the home straight. She indicated that connections would consider sending the horse for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination of BONDI BLISS revealed no significant findings. Trainer K. Purdy stated that following today's performance she would review the current racing preparation of BONDI BLISS.
Race 2: RACING RETRO QTIS 3YO MAIDEN H’CAP - 1600m
MILLENIUM PARK (C. Small) raced wide throughout.
Passing the 1000m when the tempo slowed, MACMICKLE (L. Cassidy) shifted 3 wide to improve. Shortly thereafter, CHEEKYBOI (S. Drake) also shifted out to improve, forcing MACMICKLE to race 4 wide from that point onwards.
SPOOKY BEACH (J. Johnson) was held up and unable to improve from a point approaching the 500m until leaving the 400m.
MACMICKLE (L. Cassidy) bled from both nostrils during the event. Trainer H. Page was advised that MACMICKLE would be ineligible to race for 3 months, and before resuming racing must gallop satisfactorily over 1000m in the presence of a steward.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of CHEEKYBOI, jockey Drake said that despite travelling well in the early and middle stages, CHEEKYBOI failed to respond to her riding rounding the home turn and proved most disappointing in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of CHEEKYBOI revealed that the horse was suffering from cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer G. Cornish was advised that before CHEEKYBOI was eligible to race again it must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and he must produce to stewards a veterinary clearance for the horse, including the results of an ECG. Mr Cornish indicated that CHEEKYBOI would now be sent for a spell following today's performance.
Race 3: SEQUALO @ LYNDHURST CLASS 5 H’CAP - 1000m
TRILIONE (L. Cassidy) and DANEODIN (M. Hellyer) bumped on jumping away, resulting in TRILIONE then shifting out and bumping PERFECT GLORY (J. Johnson).
DENMARK HILL (J. Hoopert) began awkwardly.
FRACTIONS (M. Cahill) raced 4 wide without cover throughout.
When asked to explain the tactics adopted on FRACTIONS, jockey Cahill stated that after beginning well his intention was to ride the gelding forward to take up a leading position. Jockey Cahill added that shortly after the start both PERFECT GLORY and WHO WILL (G. Goold) improved to his inside and he was unable to muster the necessary speed to cross those runners which resulted in him racing 4 wide throughout. M. Cahill also stated that when racing wide, FRACTIONS had a tendency to lay out from the 600m until straightening. Stewards accepted the explanation.
Race 4: YELLOWGLEN MAIDEN H’CAP - 1200m
The start of this race was delayed due to MARACOOLA (T. Harrison) requiring farrier attention after shifting the near fore plate.
CRACKINGTHENUT (P. Schmidt) began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with REAL FRENCH SAGA (R. Wiggins).
Both SATIRICAL LASS (B. El-Issa) and CHARLIE VICTOR (C. Munce) began awkwardly.
LAGER LAD (M. O'Brien) was slow to begin.
BIZARRE ROCK (R. Ride) knuckled over on jumping away.
Passing the 800m LAGER LAD had to be steadied when it improved to the inside of MARACOOLA where there was restricted room.
EARLSTOUN RULER (K. Wharton), REAL FRENCH SAGA and SATIRICAL LASS raced wide throughout.
SATIRICAL LASS laid out from a point leaving the 600m until rounding the home turn where it became awkward in its action for a short distance after REAL FRENCH SAGA, which was following, galloped on its off hind leg.
Race 5: COKE ZERO BM80 H’CAP - 1600m
SPANISH HALO (B. El-Issa), LOHAN (J. Johnson) and SAMAXAMIA (P. Schmidt) were all slow to begin.
Shortly after the start GOTCHA (M. Vance) was hampered when tightened for room between VITAL ORGAN (B. Appo) and SPARKLING SOUND (C. Munce).
Approaching the 1400m SPANISH HALO (B. El-Issa) had to be steadied when tightened for room by LOHAN, which shifted in. Apprentice J. Johnson (LOHAN) was issued with a severe reprimand.
VIVAHEART (C. Small) raced wide in the early stages.
Leaving the 200m MR TESTA (V. Colgan) had to be eased when GOTCHA shifted out.
GOTCHA (M. Vance) cast its off fore plate in running.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of VIVAHEART, C. Small stated that he was disappointed with the performance of VIVAHEART and was unable to offer any tangible explanation. A post-race veterinary examination of VIVAHEART revealed the horse to have a slower than normal post-race recovery rate. Connections undertook to have further tests carried out and would report the results of these to stewards in coming days.
GOTCHA lost its off fore plate in running.
Race 6: GRINDERS COFFEE CLASS 4 H’CAP - 1400m
Trainer K. Schweida advised that it was not his intention to have STOP CRYING (T. Harrison) ridden in a forward position at its last start and consequently will be ridden further back in the field today. After being slow to begin STOP CRYING raced towards the rear of the field.
HEARTS'N'DIAMONDS (A. Allen) was presented to race with a tongue tie, which was not part of its advertised racing gear. After hearing submissions from trainer J. McLachlan in which he advised that HEARTS'N'DIAMONDS had been presented to race with a tongue tie at its last two starts, stewards allowed HEARTS'N'DIAMONDS to race today with a tongue tie. Mr McLachlan was advised that stewards would make further inquiries with the Trainer Services Centre before finalising the matter.
The start was delayed when LOST WORLD (L. Cassidy), which lunged forward in the barriers, was removed from the barriers, underwent a veterinary examination and declared a late scratching at 3.29 pm. Trainer B. Smith was advised that he would be required to obtain a further barrier certificate for LOST WORLD prior to it being permitted to start. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on LOST WORLD be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:
12 cents in the dollar for the Win #7
12 cents in the dollar for place of winner #7
13 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #5
18 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #6
ELLAWISDOM (J. Johnson) and SMASHER (R. Wiggins) were slow to begin.
SMASHER and STOP CRYING overraced in the early stages.
Leaving the 1000m HEARTS'N'DIAMONDS had to be steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of GRAYSON SQUARE (M. Cahill).
When questioned as to the tactics adopted on FAITH NO MORE in the early stages which resulted in the horse leading today in contrast to its recent racing pattern, apprentice P. Schmidt stated that whilst it was not her intention to lead, she did ride the horse forward in the early stages to cross runners drawn to her inside and take up a handy position, however due to the slow tempo in the early stages, she allowed FAITH NO MORE to stride forward to the lead. The explanation was noted.
Apprentice G. Goold (HEARTFELT) reported that his whip became entangled in his reins between the 300m and the 100m, resulting in him not being able to apply the whip during that portion of the race.
Race 7: XXXX GOLD C,G&E CLASS 3 H’CAP - 1200m
MASTERFUL PLAY (T. Harrison) shifted out at the start and bumped IDLE SITUATION (L. Cassidy).
HOT ICE (A. Hearn) began awkwardly.
HOT ICE raced wide throughout.
LUCKY BAA (E. Wilkinson) shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages.
Race 8: AMBASSADOR TRAVEL F&M CLASS 3 H’CAP - 1200m
HOT CHILLI MILLY (E. Wilkinson) and LA FRISSON BELLE (P. Schmidt) were slow to begin.
Apprentice M. Vance, the rider of FAITH'N'COURAGE, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 1000m she permitted her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of RIGHT ROUND (C. Munce), dictating that runner in on to the running of GOLD COPY (M. McKenzie), resulting in GOLD COPY having to be checked and losing ground when tightened for room between DYSFUNCTION (K. Matheson) and RIGHT ROUND. Apprentice Vance's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, to commence at midnight on Wednesday 22 January and expire at midnight on Friday 31 January 2014.
GALLINARI (L. Cassidy) raced wide throughout.
A post-race veterinary examination of LA FRISSON BELLE, which weakened badly over the final 100m, revealed lameness in the off hind leg and near foreleg as well as a poor post-race recovery rate. Trainer R. Heathcote was advised that he will be required to provide a veterinary clearance for LA FRISSON BELLE prior to its next start. Mr Heathcote undertook to have an endoscopic examination performed on the horse, the results of which he would furnish to stewards in the coming days.
A post-race veterinary examination of FAITH'N'COURAGE (M. Vance) revealed a laceration on the off foreleg, consistent with being galloped on.
