GENERAL
As K. Matheson and G. Cooksley were ill, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
Race 1: DRUMBEATS @ LYNDHURST QTIS 2YO MAIDEN PLATE - 1200m
The start of this race was delayed when the stirrup leather on MONTANA HERO (T. Harrison) became detached during the preliminary and had to be refitted behind the barriers.
SAM DE HERO (L. Cassidy) jumped away awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with the hind quarters of HAVEN ANGEL (M. Hellyer) and then shifted in and had to be restrained from the heels of BROOKTON ICE (A. Butler).
BALLY BULL (B. Appo) and ROSELLA (L. Tarrant) made contact at the start.
LOCHLEE (R. McMahon) shifted in abruptly shortly after the start and lost ground.
TWEEDIES (K. Yoshida) raced greenly throughout.
MONTANA HERO and SPECIAL JAY (J. Johnson) raced wide throughout the event.
Approaching the 400m WALK TO THE BAR (J. Byrne) was disappointed for a run between TWEEDIES and LOCHLEE, which shifted out. As a result, WALK TO THE BAR was held up and unable to improve until a point near the 300m.
A post-race veterinary examination of FAYENCE (J. Taylor), which trailed the field throughout, revealed no abnormalities. Trainer N. Doyle was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing manners of FAYENCE. Mr Doyle reported that in light of today's performance, he will now review the preparation of the filly.
Race 2: SKY INTERNATIONAL QTIS 2YO MAIDEN PLATE - 1200m
POETIC SAGA (T. Harrison) and GOWAN BRAE (C. Munce) were both tightened for room at the start between TALE OF FORTUNE (T. Bell) and BOUDIN BLANC (A. Butler), both of which shifted ground.
TIGER BY THE TALE (G. Colless) began very awkwardly and lost ground.
MR FANTASTIC (J. Taylor) raced wide for the majority of the event.
Near the 500m SECRET TRYST (A. Hearn) shifted out whilst tiring, made contact with GOWAN BRAE and as a result became unbalanced.
Rounding the home turn POETIC SAGA was held up on the heels of the tiring SECRET TRYST and as a result was forced to shift to the outside to obtain clear running.
On returning to scale G. Colless reported that TIGER BY THE TALE raced greenly throughout the event.
A post-race veterinary examination of VOODOO MAUVE MAGIC (A. Allen), which trailed the field throughout, revealed the filly to have lacerations to the offside hock.
Race 3: GALLOPERS $1 MEMBERSHIP MAIDEN PLATE - 2242m
Connections advised that from the wide barrier GRANADOS (C. Munce) would settle worse than midfield with cover if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.
FAIRWAY CLOSE (A. Allen), which began awkwardly, was further hampered at the start by EL JADIDA (L. Tarrant), which shifted out.
HERITAGE LISTED (A. Butler) blundered on jumping away.
After being caught wide A. Butler rode HERITAGE LISTED forward and obtained a leading position approaching the 1200m.
TRY FOUR (G. Killen) raced ungenerously until a point near the 700m.
MR GOGARTY (M. Cahill) raced ungenerously whilst being restrained in the early stages of the event.
Near the 700m PUGNARE (B. Appo) attempted to shift wider on the track and in doing so made contact with CUSTER'S REWARD (E. Wilkinson) on a number of occasions.
SUPPLY AND DELIVER (S. Payne) shifted out under hard riding over the concluding stages of the event.
J. Morris (FULL HAMMER) was fined $100 for using the whip in a forehand manner more than 5 times prior to the 100m.
C. Munce (GRANADOS) pleaded guilty to and was fined $1000 for using the the whip in a forehand manner more than 5 times prior to the 100m. In determining penalty, stewards took into account jockey Munce's recent good record regarding compliance with this rule, however were mindful of the significant nature of the breach on this occasion.
Race 4: BRISBANE MARRIOTT HOTEL MAIDEN H’CAP - 1000m
ASTRALIN (R. Ride) lost ground when tightened for room at the start between HIFLYER (A. Butler) and DRUM LINE (M. Hellyer), both of which shifted ground.
SUNDAY SAGA (A. Allen) and STELLARCRAFT (M. Vance) began awkwardly and lost ground.
PEEL'EM FIRST (T. Bell) hung out from the 700m and shifted wider on the track. Stewards issued a warning against the racing manners of PEEL'EM FIRST.
CHOSEN LAD (B. Appo) hung out rounding the home turn.
Race 5: BMAG CLASS 3 H’CAP - 1000m
Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer P. Cunningham for the late declaration of T. Harrison as the rider of AIMALAC BURRA.
KATZENPFOETCHEN (G. Goold) stood flat-footed at the start and lost considerable ground. Trainer M. Jacobs was advised that a warning would be placed on KATZENPFOETCHEN.
HARDLEY (J. Byrne) and FOREST WAY (C. Munce) made contact on jumping away.
Stewards questioned J. Byrne in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance of HARDLEY. Jockey Byrne advised stewards that the filly began well and obtained a forward position as per its customary pattern, however after passing the 600m was under pressure and failed to respond to his riding in the home straight, proving disappointing. Jockey Byrne added that given the filly was first up today, he would expect it to derive a fitness benefit following today's performance.
Race 6: TICKETEK CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1000m
Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer R. Heathcote for the late declaration of A. Allen as the rider of DREAM OF SLIPS.
Connections advised that SMOKE HAZARD (G. Goold) would be ridden back in the field if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.
APPROPRIATION (N. Tomizawa) jumped in at the start and made heavy contact with TITANOMAGNETITE (T. Harrison). APPROPRIATION then shifted out and made contact with the hind quarters of MALACHITE (J. Johnson) and became unbalanced.
SHAMTILLY LACE (G. Colless) jumped out at the start and made contact with TREATMELIKEALADY (R. Wiggins).
Shortly after the start APPROPRIATION shifted in and made contact with TITANOMAGNETITE, which in turn shifted in making contact with the hind quarters of CHRYSIN (T. Bell).
Stewards questioned apprentice A. Allen in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance of DREAM OF SLIPS. Apprentice Allen advised that the horse travelled well in the early stages, however was inclined to hang out rounding the home turn, which he attributed to the horse racing in the clockwise direction for the first time. Trainer R. Heathcote also expressed disappointment with the performance of DREAM OF SLIPS, however agreed with apprentice Allen's opinion that the horse raced ungenerously in the clockwise direction for the first time today, which may have been to its detriment. Mr Heathcote added that he will now experiment with gear changes with the horse which may include recommending to connections to have the horse gelded. A post-race veterinary examination of DREAM OF SLIPS revealed the horse to have a slow post-race recovery and the thumps.
Jockey M. Cahill could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance of ROCK ME FAST today. Trainer K. Schweida also expressed his disappointment in the performance today, however added that the horse, in his opinion, has come to the end of its preparation and will now be spelled. A post-race veterinary examination of ROCK ME FAST revealed no significant findings.
Stewards questioned trainer R. Heathcote in relation to the seemingly improved performance of TREATMELIKEALADY (R. Wiggins). Mr Heathcote advised that at its most recent start at the Gold Coast on 5 April 2014, in his opinion the filly was not suited by the manner in which it was ridded on that occasion. He further advised that its form prior to that race was satisfactory and whilst he expected a forward showing today, he was somewhat surprised that it was able to win the event.
Following his ride in this race, R. Wiggins was stood down by the Club doctor.
Race 7: CHANNEL SEVEN CLASS 2 H’CAP - 1300m
Approaching the 1000m, when being restrained to avoid the heels of SUNSET HILLS (T. Bell), CANNY BE FAMOUS (T. Harrison), which was racing keenly, lost ground.
A post-race veterinary examination of NEUSCHWANSTEIN (A. Allen), which hung out from the 800m, revealed the gelding to have the thumps. In light of the performance today, trainer R. Heathcote advised that the horse would be sent for a spell.
HOLEY GADOLEY (J. Johnson), OAK 'N' ARTHUR (A. Hearn) and CRACKERJET (G. Colless) raced wide throughout.
Approaching the 100m HOLEY GADOLEY was forced to steady to avoid the heels of HALLSIDE ROSE (E. Wilkinson), which shifted out under hard riding. E. Wilkinson was reprimanded and advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.
G. Colless (CRACKERJET) was reprimanded for using the whip in a forehand manner more than 5 times prior to the 100m.
Race 8: YELLOWGLEN BM85 H’CAP - 1300m
Following his previous ride, apprentice G. Goold was stood down by the Club doctor and riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
The start of this race was delayed when VEEWAP (L. Tarrant), which was fractious in the barriers, was removed, inspected by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to race.
SKY EFFORT (A. Spinks) raced wide throughout.
THEFT (J. Byrne) shifted out under pressure near the 150m, forcing JET DOWN ON IT (E. Wilkinson) wider on the track.
Stewards opened an inquiry into apprentice S. Payne's riding of EASY RUNNING. After taking evidence from apprentice Payne and trainer D. Forster in the presence of Jockeys Advocate Mr S. Scriven, stewards adjourned the matter to enable them to obtain sectional times for the event and to further review the films.
Apprentice S. Payne (EASY RUNNING) was fined $400 for using the whip in a forehand manner more than 5 times prior to the 100m.
Trainer D. Forster (EASY RUNNING) was fined $300 after pleading guilty to a charge under AR. 137A(7)(b) in that she offered an inducement to apprentice S. Payne, the rider of EASY RUNNING, by offering to reimburse him for any penalty that may be incurred by him should he breach the whip rules.
Race 9: WINNING EDGE PRESENTATIONS CLASS 4 H’CAP - 1600m
As R. Wiggins had been stood down by the Club doctor, G. Killen was substituted as the rider of SHOW OF STRENGTH.
Connections advised that from the wide barrier, WRITTEN ABOVE ALL (T. Bell) would be ridden in a forward position if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.
KNOCKABOUT (T. Wolfgram) raced wide for the majority of the event.
When questioned regarding the performance of HYPOTHESIS, apprentice L. Tarrant stated that the gelding travelled well until the 1100m, where it improved on to heels when the pace slowed, resulting in him having to steady his mount. He added that HYPOTHESIS was then off the bit from that point and failed to respond to his riding from the 600m and proved disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of HYPOTHESIS revealed the gelding to be lame in both fore fetlocks. Trainer H. Page was advised that she will be required to produce a veterinary clearance for HYPOTHESIS prior to its next start.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of WRITTEN ABOVE ALL, T. Bell stated that his mount had to work hard early when he was attempting to carry out his instructions to ride forward, however travelled well until the 500m where it was under pressure and weakened noticeably from that point and proved disappointing. Stewards will interview trainer R. Heathcote in coming days regarding the horse's performance and its post-race recovery.
