Near the 500m, LONHIE ROCKS (M. Cahill) and EXEMPLARY (D. Browne) came together due mainly to EXEMPLARY endeavouring to shift out from behind SACKFUL.
From the 200m, DUNLAP (A. Butler) was inconvenienced by MALALA (R. Wiggins), which shifted out.

Near the 1300m, HOT AUGUSTA (L. Tarrant), which was inclined to run in away, was restrained to avoid the heels of QUEEN CAESAR (T. Bell).
Due mainly to the pace in the early stages, both PINK DIAMONDS (M. Cahill) and PIPPI LONGSOCKS overraced.
In the early part of the straight, PINBALL LASS (B. Appo) was unable to find clear running until near the 300m.
PIPPI LONGSOCKS lost its near hind plate in running.

COUNTY COMMAND (L. Tarrant) raced wide without cover.
R. Jamieson reported that WATLING hung throughout the race until straightening.
R. McMahon explained that BEAU JEZ raced behind midfield as expected and obtained cover in the early stages. He said near the 700m it was reluctant to hold its position between I DO CARE (L. Rolls) and I SMARTICUS and dropped the bit. Jockey McMahon said for this reason he endeavoured to ride the horse along, however it did not respond and on straightening, and with clear running, despite his urgings, BEAU JEZ never quickened and, in his opinion, was most disappointing. He added the horse had been working well and he was confident of its chances today. Mr G. Thompson, stable representative, was unable to add to the comments by his rider and said the horse has only been in his stable for a short time. Mr Thompson undertook to report to stewards any abnormality that becomes apparent in the following days. A post race veterinary examination of BEUA JEZ failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
