WEATHER - SHOWERY TRACK - GOOD
RACE 1: MATER HOSPITALS' TRUST H'CAP - 1460M.
Nearing the 1200m., GOWRIE MISS had to be steadied off the heels of LARRIKINTA.
Approaching the 400m., GOWRIE MISS had to be steadied to avoid the heels of CHOMOLUNGMA, which shifted out. R. Goltz was reprimanded and advised to exercise care when shifting ground.
RIVER BOYNE commenced to hang out from the 600m., enabling ITERRA to gain a run to his inside. T. Brown, rider of RIVERBOYNE, then allowed his mount to shift out under pressure in the straight without endeavouring to straighten the gelding at any stage. T. Brown then struck RIVER BOYNE with the whip after passing the winning post. Jockey T. Brown was advised that a similar riding exhibition would result in a application by the stewards to the Licensing body to downgrade his licence.
ALFRESCO GIRL was held up for clear running in the early stages of the straight.
Near the 100m., GOWRIE MISS shifted in abruptly under pressure.
M. Paget was questioned as to the reason for ALFRESCO GIRL being ridden near the tail of the field today, as compared to previous starts when the mare had been ridden on the pace. M. Paget stated he had been instructed by connections to ride the horse in a rearward position. Trainer D. Bell confirmed the instructions, however he was advised of his obligations to advise stewards of any change in riding tactics.
When questioned, L. Appo was unable to offer any excuses for the disappointing performance of BUGLERS, adding that the gelding was under pressure from after passing the 800m..
RACE 2: BRISBANE BUS LINES H'CAP - 1200M.
Due to transport difficulties, M. Carson was unable to fulfil his engagement on CELTIC DYNASTY. M Paget was substituted as the rider of that gelding.
CLIFTON MAGIC stood flatfooted at the start, losing considerable ground.
CELTIC DYNASTY jumped outwards at the start, hampering NEMOV and SILVER AZURE.
Approaching the 400m., SILVER AZURE was hampered between SILENT PROBE and CELTIC DYNASTY, which shifted out slightly.
At the entrance to the straight, MAIZCAY BELLE shifted out to improve and made contact with HAD A HUNCH.
DIWAI shifted out abruptly near the 100m. and made contact with SILVER AZURE.
MUSICAL SPIN veered out abruptly near the 50m..
The track rating was downgraded to dead following this event.
RACE 3: WILSON HTM H'CAP - 800M.
Apprentice M. Rice was fined $50 for failing to claim his full allowance on KITTEN.
GROOVER, which was fractious in the barriers and got its head caught between the gates, was withdrawn by stewards acting on veterinary advice at 2.14 p.m.. Subsequent to the event, all monies invested on GROOVER were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 20 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 16 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets, applicable to successful wagers placed prior to the withdrawal time. Trainer K. Kelly was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding.
On return to scale a protest was lodged by L. Morrison, rider of the 2nd placegetter, PETALT, against CANADIAN MAPLE being declared the winner, alleging interference near the 50m.. Whilst stewards conceded that CANADIAN MAPLE had shifted out abruptly at the 50m. hampering PETALT, they were of the opinion that the incident occurred too close to the finish line to warrant a reversal of placings. The protest was therefore dismissed and the Judge's placings confirmed.
WELSH PIPER was slow to begin.
CANADIAN MAPLE had to be steadied off the heels of BANJO MAN near the 600m..
JUST A SHANTIE blundered near the 150m..
Leaving the 100m., the saddle on CANADIAN MAPLE shifted to the nearside, placing G. Lynch at a disadvantage for the remainder of the event.
Following the event, trainer G. Richardson reported that STAR CANADIAN had bled. STAR CANADIAN will be barred from racing for a period of 3 months.
RACE 4: IPSWICH HOSPITAL RENAL UNIT H'CAP - 800M.
Near the 700m., KITCHIKAN, which was inclined to hang out, shifted in, hampering HOT FEET and COUNTY SPIRIT.
After passing the 400m., GLASSY and HOT FEET were forced to race in restricted room to the inside of VALENTE CORAGEM, which was inclined to hang in, and continued to do so for the remainder of the event. Trainer J. Prouten will be advised that a warning will be placed on the mare.
RACE 5: SPRING IN ESK H'CAP - 800M.
K. Yoshida, rider of FLIRT 'N' DANCE, accidentally dropped his whip near the 500m..
Approaching the 400m., OUR LURE had to be steadied off the heels of HON KWOK SPIRIT, which was taken in by POPULAR DECISION.
Rounding the home turn, COUNT YALLAH had to be checked to avoid the heels of HON KWOK SPIRIT, which was taken in by POPULAR DECISION. J. Hoopert, rider of POPULAR DECISION, was severely reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear.
Nearing the winning post, MILITARRA shifted in and made contact with OUR LURE.
An inquiry has been opened into the handling of MARAUDING LASS. After taking evidence from jockey J. Cook and trainer D. Burns, the inquiry was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
RACE 6: MATER CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL H'CAP - 1200M.
FIRE OF HEAVEN and VAIN AND HANDY jumped away awkwardly.
BULL POWER was forced to race wide throughout.
When questioned, J. Taylor, rider of FIRE OF HEAVEN, stated that after passing the crossing inside the 200m. he felt his mount become awkward and was he was of the opinion that the runner to his outside may have galloped on his heels.
RACE 7: ESK HOSPITAL AUXILIARY GARDEN PARTY H'CAP - 1200M.
FIRES OF IRELAND and HOUSE OF HORRORS made contact on jumping away.
RACE 8: FRIDAY'S H'CAP - 1460M.
As K. Bell was to be overweight, J. Cook was substituted as the rider of YALLAH CITY. K. Bell was reprimanded.
NIGHT IN VIENNA was slow to begin.
Near the 1200m., SHADEAL PRINCE shifted in, taking SURPRISED in on to YALLAH CITY, which in turn shifted in, tightening the running of HIGH FLYER and MR. INSURANCE, which had to be steadied.
ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
