Stewards questioned apprentice A. Holt with regards to the riding tactics he adopted on MINI MAIZING from the 600m until nearing the 300m where by that gelding lost ground when racing to the inside of JOHNNY AUCASH. A. Holt stated that the gelding had good gate speed however he was instructed that if he was attacked for the lead to take a sit behind the speed. He added that he was instructed not to pressure MINI MAIZING until rounding the home turn and to ride the horse hands and heels and not to use the whip as the horse does not respond well when pressured with it. A.Holt added that MINI MAIZING had hung out from the middle stages and upon entering home straight which had affected his ability in riding the gelding and contributed to him losing ground at the relevant stage of the race. When interviewed, trainer T. Dougall confirmed the instructions. Stewards in considering the evidence acknowledged that MINI MAIZING was inclined to hang out in the middle stages, and that A. Holt had ridden to instructions, however believed that he had erred in his riding from leaving the 600m where the pace of the race quickened and he was left flat footed and lost ground at that stage of the event. In all of the circumstances, stewards acknowledged A. Holt’s inexperience and took no further action other than to refer his riding to the Apprentice Training Department of Racing Queensland for further tuition.
