HUSANI (B. Appo) and RED SUIT (C. Kearney) reared at the start and lost ground.
PRETZELS (I. Coombes) and JOYTIME (W. O’Connell) were slow to begin.
MOSSTANGO (R. Hancock) laid out from shortly after the start until near the 600m.
PRETZELS hung out from the 600m until approaching the home turn.
HUSANI shifted out rounding the home turn and bumped MUNSTER PROVINCE (L. Appo) which became unbalanced.
DOUBLE TOP (R. Jamieson) was held up for clear running from the 200m until approaching the 100m.
C. Kearney was advised of his obligations to ride his mounts right to the finish of the race.
A post race veterinary examination of JOYTIME revealed the gelding had bled from both nostrils during the event. Trainer J. Weidemann was advised that as this was the second occasion that JOYTIME had suffered a bleeding attack that the gelding would now incur a lifetime bar from racing.
Race 2: Club Pine Rivers Maiden Plate 1200m
1st – Pukekura Boy 2nd – Scotch Rocket 3rd – Our Special Angel 4th – Oscarben
A pre-race veterinary examination of HEY PAT (J. Kehoe), which had not started for some considerable time, passed the gelding to race.
ALASTAIR’S CROWN (R. Hancock) was slow to begin and lost ground.
W. O’Connell, the rider of SCOTCH ROCKET, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that near the 1000m he allowed his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of HEY PAT, resulting in that runner having to be checked to avoid the heels of SCOTCH ROCKET. W. O’Connell’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period covered by 6 meetings, to commence midnight 14 July and expire midnight 25 July 2012. A short distance later, HEY PAT which was awkwardly placed on the heels of SCOTCH ROCKET, shifted out forcing GRACE’S GIFT (I. Coombes) and OSCARBEN (C. Kearney) wider on the track.
GRACE’S GIFT raced wide from the 800m.
PEKEKURA BOY (L. Appo) and SCOTCH ROCKET both shifted out under pressure in the straight.
I. Coombes, the rider of GRACE’S GIFT, stated that after being forced wider on the track near the 900m, the filly lost momentum and never travelled well from that point. He added that the filly however did balance up approaching the home turn and ran on reasonably well from that point.
Race 3: The Esk Butcher Shoppe Class 3 Plate 1200m
1st – Fair Swap 2nd – Isajoy 3rd – Perfect Days 4th – Butch
MR MAGORIUM (R. Ride) and UNANIMOUS DECISION (S. Drake) were slow to begin.
ISAJOY (J. Kropp) shifted out at the start and bumped PERFECT DAYS (T. Serjeant).
GOLD LAND (B. Appo) raced wide in the early stages.
Approaching the 100m BLACKGOLD (I. Coombes) was steadied when SHUMIE GO (B. Derbyshire) shifted out slightly.
When returning to the enclosure, apprentice B. Derbyshire was dislodged from SHUMIE GO. Stewards acting on the evidence before them and their own observations stood B. Derbyshire down from riding for the remainder of the day. Rider replacements were made as per the race day summary.
Stewards questioned R. Ride, rider of MR MAGORIUM, regarding the disappointing performance of the gelding. R. Ride stated that the horse was under pressure from the start and never travelled well at any stage and, in her opinion, was looking for further distance in its races. When interviewed, trainer B. Hudson stated that Mr MAGORIUM in his opinion was disadvantaged by the quick pace of today’s race and in agreeing with R. Ride’s comments would now look to step MR MAGORIUM up in distance. A post race veterinary examination of MR MAGORIUM failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.
Trainer W. Lawson reported that ARABIA lost the near hind plate in running.
Race 4: Blair’s Bestie Boonie Maiden Plate 1460m
1st – Haven Princess 2nd – Marked Affair 3rd – La Belle Aurore 4th – Universal Quest
BLUEGRASS ROCKSTAR (I. Coombes) underwent a pre-race veterinary inspection and was passed to race.
TIKKA MASALA (N. Evans) was slow to begin.
Near the 1200m UNIVERSAL QUEST (L. Appo) shifted in forcing MARKED AFFAIR (J. Johnson) in and having to be steadied from the heels of SPOT ON CHARLIE (S. Bayliss). L. Appo was reprimanded and advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.
UNIVERSAL QUEST raced wide in the early stages.
MARKED AFFAIR raced wide from the 700m.
Stewards sought an explanation from I. Coombes regarding the performance of BLUEGRASS ROCKSTAR which compounded from the 600m and finished a distant last. He stated that the gelding got its head up and hung out rounding the first turn and from that point was not tractable for the remainder of the event. He added that his mount continued to hang out and changed strides throughout the event and became unbalanced on several occasions. Trainer M. Simpson advised Stewards that in light of the performance the gelding would now be retired from racing. Stewards advised that BLUEGRASS ROCKSTAR must officially trial prior to racing again. A post race veterinary examination of BLUEGRASS ROCKSTAR revealed no obvious abnormalities.
Race 5: 57 On Cressbrook Class 2 Handicap 1460m
1st – Marc The Magpie 2nd – Stigori 3rd – Genius Master 4th – Tunes Of gold
AS there was no other apprentice rider available, stewards permitted B. Cornell as the replacement rider for GENIUS MASTER.
A pre-race veterinary examination of GENIUS MASTER, which had not started for some considerable time, passed the gelding to race.
STIGORI (S. Bayliss) and GOLDEN IDEAL (I. Coombes) were slow to begin and lost ground.
GENIUS MASTER shifted out at the start and bumped TUNES OF GOLD (R. Hancock).
Leaving the 1200m EXTRAVAGANT MISS (N. Evans) improved up onto the heels of RUNNING SOLO (L. Appo) and had to be steadied.
Rounding the turn near the 1100m, NOACHENKA (C. Kearney) hung out and had to be checked from the heels of RESONATING (D. McMaster), STIGORI which was following improved up onto the heels of RESONATING and had to be checked and shifted out forcing SARS MARIO (W. Connell) and TUNES OF GOLD (R. Hancock) wider on the track.
MARC THE MAGPIE (B. Appo) raced wide in the early stages.
TUNES OF GOLD raced wide throughout.
Near the 700m NOACHENKA hung out and was eased from the heels of MARC THE MAGPIE.
GENIUS MASTER was held up for clear running for a short distance rounding the home turn.
Stewards opened an inquiry into the riding tactics adopted by L. Appo on RUNNING SOLO, in particular the reasons for RUNNING SOLO losing ground from the 1200m until near the 800m. The inquiry was adjourned to allow trainer B. Robinson to be present to provide evidence.
When asked to comment on the seemingly disappointing performance of GENERAL BAXTER, rider J. Johnson stated that she was obliged to race wide throughout which she felt had an effect on the gelding being able to run out the distance of today’s event. A post race veterinary examination of GENERAL BAXTER revealed the gelding to be lame in the off hind leg and exhibiting a laceration to its hock which was consistent with being galloped on. Trainer P. Moncrieff will be advised that a veterinary clearance will be required for GENERAL BAXTER before racing again.
ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
