LOCKYER RACE CLUB STEWARDS REPORT THURS.17.5.01
STEWARDS PANEL: Mr C. Clifford (Chairman); Mr C. McLune; Mr R. Sanders; Mr W. Flynn; Mr C. Waller (Cadet).
WEATHER - OVERCAST TRACK - GOOD
RACE 1: WESTFARMERS LANDMARK SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1100M.
As A. Russell was indisposed, D. Tanti was substituted as the rider of WHAT PRICE FUN, and D. Griffin as the rider of SEMIFORMAL.
As A. Cowie failed to arrive on course in time to fulfill his engagement on A THOUSAND DEGREES, L. Appo was substituted as the rider of that gelding.
McGINTY ROSE and A THOUSAND DEGREES made contact on jumping away.
TOPPA shifted out and made slight contact with TOMORROW RISING at the start, resulting in TOMORROW RISING losing some ground.
After leaving the 1000m., SPINDLE shifted in momentarily tightening SUERAY.
At the same stage, ULTRA MODERN became unbalanced and lost ground abruptly. When questioned regarding this incident, apprentice R. Pittman stated that in his opinion the colt may have broken down in one of his forelegs and finished a distant last. A veterinary examination of ULTRA MODERN failed to reveal any abnormality. Trainer R. Mackay was advised that ULTRA MODERN must trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start.
Approaching the 700m., MCGINTY ROSE shifted in despite the efforts of its rider, resulting in TOPPA having to be steadied.
RACE 2: PRESTON PEAK WINES H'CAP - 1400M.
As apprentice T. Banks was injured at trackwork, B. Carne was substituted as the rider of MAKE A MARK. B. Carne was fined $50 for failing to claim her full allowance.
After riding in race 1, L. Appo was examined by the club's ambulance officer and was stood down from his engagement on YUKON SILVER and was replaced by M. Tracey.
As A. Gillett was to be overweight, D. Tanti was substituted as the rider of ROPE THE MOON. A. Gillett was fined $100.
GO TELEST was reluctant to jump and lost considerable ground. Trainer M. Guldbransen was advised that he would be required to produce a barrier test certificate for the filly prior to its next race start.
CLASSY BELLE shifted out abruptly at the start, making solid contact with YUKON SILVER, which in turn made contact with HIVITE.
SIGNGOLD and WOOPS jumped away awkwardly.
Approaching the first turn, CLASSY BELLE hung out and commenced to overrace, resulting in EPSOM HAIGE having to be momentarily steadied. CLASSY BELLE then continued to race ungenerously for some distance.
S. Katsidis was dislodged from ACE CAN DO after the winning post. After being examined by club's doctor, S. Katsidis was cleared to fulfill his remaining engagements.
RACE 3: FREEMAN'S BUTCHERY H'CAP - 860M.
DARB'S MATE and TAILLEVENT were both slow to begin.
NYOMO shifted in at the start, making contact with MIA MARY, which in turn tightened the running of TONGOLENA.
TAILLEVENT raced greenly in the early and middle stages, and approaching the 400m. had to alter course around the heels of DARB'S MATE.
RACE 4: XXXX GOLD H'CAP - 860M.
CLOUDMIST, which broke through the barriers prior to the start, was quickly restrained and resumed its place in the field. A veterinary examination of CLOUDMIST following the event revealed abrasions to the off hock and pastern.
COUNT YALLAH and HIGH JUMP were slow to begin.
AUNTY TOBY'S was tightened for room shortly after the start between MING PALACE and CLOUDMIST, which shifted in.
Approaching the 700m., S. Morris, rider of SAHARA SAINT, allowed his mount to shift in, resulting in ROMANTIC BLUE having to be steadied and taken in on to CLOUDMIST. S. Morris was severely reprimanded and reminded of his obligations to be 2 lengths clear when shifting ground.
ROMANTIC REGION was forced to race wide in the early and middle stages.
Approaching the 400m., CLOUDMIST was inclined to lay out and had to be steadied off the heels of ROMANTIC BLUE.
RACE 5: MARSH PRINTING H'CAP - 1100M.
PANTS and CONCERT were slow to begin.
RACE 6: FALKEN TYRES H'CAP - 1100M.
Correct weight was delayed when D. Tanti, rider of MOUNTAIN AIR, advised stewards that in his opinion he had been denied a fair start. After taking evidence from D. Tanti and starter Mr R. Corvi, stewards found that MOUNTAN AIR had been afforded a fair start and correct weight on the Judge's placings was declared. Trainer T. Hall was advised that he would be required to produce a barrier certificate for MOUNTAIN AIR prior to its next race start.
MOUNTAIN AIR reared as the gates opened and lost considerable ground.
FLAMING GOD blundered shortly after the start.
RACE 7: HAULMAKR TRAILERS GATTON CUP - 2000M.
RAISE YOUR BID jumped away awkwardly.
MASTER RAIDER was slow to begin.
Approaching the first turn, KAREN'S WAY had to be steadied off the heels of NED'S REVENGE and shifted in despite the efforts of its rider, taking DIRECTOR'S SPECIAL in on to REDINBURGH, which had to be steadied.
After passing the 1400m. when the pace slackened, SUPER ESPION commenced to overrace, taking RAISE YOUR BID wider on the track. ROADWAY, which improved to the inside of SUPER ESPION, had to be steadied when that horse shifted back in.
Approaching the 200m., ROADWAY shifted out to improve and made heavy contact with DIRECTOR'S SPECIAL.
From the 300m. to the finish line, REDINBURGH was held up for clear running between DIRECTOR'S SPECIAL and ROADWAY.
A post race veterinary examination of ROADWAY revealed the gelding to be lame in the off foreleg.
RACE 8: WITHCOTT SEEDLINGS H'CAP - 1600M.
TOUCH OF SANITY blundered shortly after the start.
At the entrance to the straight, MALLEE FIRE, after shifting out to obtain clear running, made contact with CROUTON on 2 occasions.
Stewards questioned jockey G. O'Sullivan into the seemingly disappointing performance of CROUTON. G. O'Sullivan stated that due to the lack of early pace, the horse raced fiercely in the early stages and he was forced to make a run earlier than anticipated after being forced wider on the track by GANGSTER at the 750m.. G. O'Sullivan further stated that after the hard run, the gelding failed to run on over the concluding stages. A veterinary examination of CROUTON failed to reveal any abnormality, and a swab sample was taken.
GENERAL: Bookmaker A. Purvis pleaded guilty to a charge under LR 119(m), in that he failed to record a bet which he placed with bookmaker J. Forde. A. Purvis was fined $100.
ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
