An inquiry was been opened into G. Lynch's handling of GOLD HEART, particularly in the early and middle stages of the race. G. Lynch explained that from the alley he was instructed to ride the horse from behind, a pattern adopted on the mare on previous occasions. Stewards questioned Lynch at length, specifically as to the reason for the horse losing ground between the 1200m. and the 800m., where the GOLD HEART raced several lengths off the second-last horse. G. Lynch explained that the horse was unbalanced getting around the first turn and attributed this to a problem associated with the horse's neck. He explained that the horse had received manipulative treatment to the neck and he felt that the mare did not travel comfortably despite his efforts. G. Lynch added that the horse had difficulty making ground due to the fast pace being set by the leader, and that the horse failed to respond to his riding from the 800m. until entering the straight. A veterinary examination of GOLD HEART failed to reveal any significant abnormality. The explanation of G. Lynch was noted, however trainer M. Brosnan fined $300 for failing to notify on the prescribed form that GOLD HEART had been treated for a neck condition [AR 140 (a)]
