GENERAL

As apprentice E O’Connell was injured the following rider replacements were permitted:
Race 1: CANADA GATE App B Floyd
Race 2: CRAIGLEA FAITH App B Floyd
Race 4: RED ROLLER App S Wiseman
Race 5: CRAIGLEA ROSE App D McWhinney

The track rating was upgraded from a Good 3 to a Good 2 at 12:15pm.

Race 1: QTIS MAIDEN PLATE - 1000m
1st – MAKE A DEAL 2nd – FOOTROT FLATS 3rd – LOOKING AT LACE 4th – WHAT A TYCOON

A warning was issued to the connections of CRAIGLEA BARKLY (S Bayliss) which was reluctant to proceed to the barriers.

When moving onto the track MAY (C Kearney) made heavy contact with the saddling enclosure gate. A subsequent vet examination behind the barriers, passed that mare fit to start.

CRAIGLEA BARKLY and FOOTROT FLATS(App S Wiseman) were both slow to begin.

CRAIGLEA KIA (S Apthorpe) raced wide throughout and from the 600m had a tendency to lay out. A subsequent veterinary examination of the filly failed to reveal any abnormality.

A swab sample was taken from the winner MAKE A DEAL.

Race 2: CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1000m
1st – NAVAL ACTION 2nd – ROSE OF LAWRENCE 3rd – GIZA 4th – BOSSBOSS

CRAIGLEA FAITH (App B Floyd) began awkwardly.

GIZA (L Henry) was tightened shortly after the start between BOSSBOSS (J McKinnon) and CHENKA STAR (S Bayliss), both of whom shifted ground.

FORMAL WINTER (D Gill) raced wide throughout.

D Whitmore, the rider of fifth placegetter LAST RITES, was reprimanded under AR137(b) for failing to ride his mount out fully to the line. In assessing penalty stewards were of the belief his actions did not affect his finishing position.

A swab sample was taken from the winner NAVAL ACTION.

Race 3: CLASS 4 HANDICAP - 1200m
1st – SARGASSO 2nd – FRISCO AFFAIR 3rd – BASALTIC BANNE 4th – DANE RHYTHM

Mr T Thomas, trainer of SARGASSO, was reprimanded under AR124 for presenting that gelding late to the enclosure.

The start of this race was delayed when SWORD OF HONOUR (C. Kearney) proved difficult to load.

ANGEL PLACE (D Gill) shifted out at the start and bumped CHEQUE FOR FREEDOM (J McKinnon).

When questioned regarding the apparent poor performance of DESTINY PARTNERS, jockey S Bayliss stated that in his opinion the gelding failed to handle today’s firm track and that DESTINY PARTNERS’ previous best form had been on surfaces with some amount of give in them. His explanation was noted.

Approaching the 100m GO ON GREG (App S Wiseman) was steadied when SARGASSO (L Finlay) shifted in under pressure. L Finlay was advised to exercise care in similar circumstances.

CHEQUE FOR FREEDOM raced wide throughout.

A swab sample was taken from the winner SARGASSO.

Race 4: OPEN HANDICAP - 1400m
1st – HIDDEN ASSETS 2nd – BURMAK 3rd – IT’S WUNDERBAR 4th – CHIEF CHARGINGBEAR

IT’S WUNDERBAR (L Finlay) was slow to begin.

BURMAK (S Apthorpe) raced wide in the early and middle stages.

Approaching the 500m MANDS BOND (C Kearney), which was racing at the tail of the field, stumbled of its own accord and fell, dislodging its rider. A veterinary examination of the gelding revealed a fractured pelvis and compound injuries to the near foreleg. MANDS BOND was subsequently euthanized on humane grounds. C Kearney was examined by the club medical officers and stood down from his remaining ride and advised to supply a medical clearance prior to his next race/trial ride.

Race 5: CLASS B HANDICAP - 1400m
1st – HEY FRISCO 2nd – FUNDEVOGEL 3rd – LIGHTNING FLASH 4th – UPTOWN EAGLE

As C Kearney was injured and no other senior rider was available, stewards permitted App S Arnold to be substituted as the rider of SANSIRA.

FUNDEVOGEL (I Coombes), which was fractious in the barriers, was checked at the start between SUGAR DIAMOND (D Gill) and SANSIRA which shifted out.

LIGHTNING FLASH (J McKinnon) was slow to begin.

Rounding the hometurn LIGHTNING FLASH shifted out to improve and in doing so bumped FIRST PIPEMAJOR (R Hancock).

HEY FRISCO (S Apthorpe) raced wide throughout.

On return to scale D Gill, rider of SUGAR DIAMOND, reported her right leg made heavy contact with the inside barrier partition just prior to the start being affected when SUGAR DIAMOND became fractious in the gates. As a consequence D Gill was placed at a disadvantage during the race and unable to fully ride that gelding out in her normal manner.

When questioned regarding tactics adopted on SANSIRA, particularly the fast early pace set during the early and middle stages, App S Arnold stated that with the addition of blinkers the mare over-raced and was reluctant to settle over the 1400m of today’s race. He added that SANSIRA, in his opinion, was more suited to distances of 1200m or less. Stewards accepted S Arnold’s explanation.

A swab sample was taken from the winner HEY FRISCO.
