RACE 1 – CITY SLICKER (TWO-YEARS OLD) HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES
GRACE ANNE jumped away awkwardly.
Near the 800 metres WHIPPED was checked to avoid the heels of PERSONAL CHOICE.
Rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight THORNBOY became unbalanced on several occasions when racing in restricted room between CIVIC CITATION and LORD PUISSANCE which was inclined to lay in.
RACE 2 – COHORT (THREE-YEARS-OLD) MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,300 METRES
On jumping PENCOURT and FOREVER ACTION were crowded for room between PORT OFFICE and STEADY BABE both of which shifted ground.
Near the 1,000 metres PORT OFFICE shifted out, resulting in CHICORY being steadied and taken out making slight contact with STEEL SPRINGS.
APP. A MERRITT (MADAME D’ALBRET) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) for permitting his mount to shift out leaving the 500 metres when not clear of LOOK AT ME causing those two horses to make heavy contact and in turn LOOK AT ME continue to shift out making heavy contact with CHICORY which was checked and forced wider on the track. APP. A MERRITT had his licence to ride in races suspended for a period of 8 meetings to commence immediately and expire at midnight 12 August 1999.
Stewards questioned Trainer M SIMS regarding the improved performance of WHAT YOU WILL today. He explained that at the filly’s previous starts it was inclined to race fiercely which proved detrimental to her performances. He also added that at its first up run at Ipswich on 22 July WHAT YOU WILL was caught wide throughout the race therefore he instructed to try and ride WHAT YOU WILL further back than normal in an endeavour to get the filly to finish off her races. His explanation was noted.
RACE 3 – ATLANTIC CROSSING MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,200 METRES
Trainer L K TINSLEY was fined $50 for nominating SILVERANA in this particular race when it was found to be ineligible.
KOUDAZAH which dislodged its rider behind the barrier and completed a circuit of the course was subsequently a late withdrawal at 1:52 p.m. by order of Stewards. Prior to the announcement of “correct weight” all monies invested on KOUDAZAH were ordered to be refunded with deductions of 17 cents in the dollar for a win and 15 cents for a place on the face value of the ticket.
Inside the 900 metres INAPPROPRIATE shifted in momentarily. This resulted in INSUBORDINATE to continue to shift in causing MISTY MOON to be checked, MR. PEACE which was following also had to be checked and shifted out resulting in ALWAYS GOLD being checked. Although the degree of interference suffered by the said runners was severe, stewards were not satisfied that the incident was as a result of rider error, therefore no direct action was taken. Nonetheless L HILL (INSUBORDINATE) was issued with a reprimand for permitting his mount to shift in.
For some distance in the early stages of the straight REGEMO ROAD was disappointed for clear running behind WORTHWHILE MONEY and inside INAPPROPRIATE. As a result of this REGEMO ROAD and INAPPROPRIATE made contact on several occasions.
RACE 4 – KING RAUTAI (COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES CLASS 1) HANDICAP – 1,200 METRES
Over the concluding stages of the race QUICK GLORY shifted out under pressure.
RACE 5 – B.B.K. PLUMBING PLUS (FILLIES & MARES CLASS 1) HANDICAP – 1,200 METRES
BALLY ROBYN jumped very awkwardly and lost considerable ground.
Soon after the start IN OUR TIME, MINORI EXPRESS and GO REETA were all crowded for room between TRISHA’S DAY and SILVERANA which shifted in. As some doubt existed as to whether one rider could be held fully responsible for the incident no direct action was taken, however, G BAKER (SILVERANA) was issued with a reprimand.
J POLLARD (PRECILLA) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) for permitting his mount to shift out several horses inside the final 200 metres whilst riding it along with the whip and as a result caused crowding to GO REETA and IN OUR TIME which was checked. J POLLARD’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings to commence midnight 1 August 1999 and to expire midnight 12 August 1999. .
Approaching the home turn FUNNYBONE which was racing in restricted room shifted in momentarily causing crowding to BALLY ROBYN which made contact with the running rail.
RACE 6 – CITY OF GOLD COAST FLYING HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES
APP. G O’SULLIVAN pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) for permitting his mount to shift in near the 1,000 metres when insufficiently clear of IRISH PILGRIM resulting in that horse being taken across the rightful running of DYNAMIC BLAZE causing that horse to be checked. APP. O’SULLIVAN’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 meetings to commence midnight 1 August 1999 and to expire midnight 14 August 1999.
A veterinary inspection of CALVERT PRINCE revealed deep scalping wounds to the inside of the off hind leg.
RACE 7 – BRISBANE MARRIOTT (CLASS 2) HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES
On jumping GREAT RELATIONS shifted out and made contact with GERRY’S GOLD which in turn inconvenienced FROGMAN.
Jockey L HILL was questioned regarding the poor performance of GREAT RELATIONS today and he explained that his mount never appeared to handle today’s track conditions and that it was inclined to hang out for a major part of the race. He also added that his mount was under pressure from the 800 metres. Mrs H BOWDITCH the representative for Trainer B BOWDITCH could not offer any excuses for the poor performance and would report any condition that GREAT RELATIONS may develop in the near future. A veterinary inspection of GREAT RELATIONS revealed no obvious abnormalities and the gelding was also sent to be swabbed.
RACE 8 –MARRIOTT SURFERS PARADISE RESORT (CLASS 4) HANDICAP – 1,200 METRES
MR. IVAN and SPHERICAL PROSPECT were both slowly away.
GENERAL
Trainer J ZIELKE was fined the sum of $100 for breaching AR140A in that he failed to submit a condition form for JODAVRO at Gatton on 9 July 1999.
EIGHT WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED ALONG WITH GREAT RELATIONS.
