RAIL: TRUE POSITION – “ORIGINAL” TRACK
STEWARDS’ MR T BAILEY (CHAIRMAN), MR J GRAHAM, MR D TAPSALL,
PANEL: MR W FLYNN and M TUTT (CADET)
RACE 1 – JIM BEAM BLACK MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,600 METRES
CURLY SAM was slowly away.
MARCEAU ROAD jumped awkwardly.
Rounding the first turn near the 1,300 metres SHIMMY SHAKE which was inclined to race ungenerously lost ground when being steadied.
Leaving the 1,000 metres PROFESSIONAL GIRL shifted out to improve from behind the leader. A short time after this YALLAH’S GIFT which was following had to be checked to avoid its heels when the pace slackened.
For a major part of the home straight CURLY SAM was inclined to lay in.
RACE 2 – ISLE OF CAPRI (THREE-YEARS-OLD) MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,205 METRES
As S SHIELD was unfit to fulfil his remaining engagements, stewards permitted the following replacements:
Race 2 ANOTHER DEBIT C SMALL
Race 7 CAMAGIFI N DAY
Race 9 CORNWALL BAY N DAY
In the early and middle stages of the race INTENTIONS raced very fiercely.
MIGHTY MALTESE suffered a bleeding attack from both nostrils and will now be ineligible to race for a period of three months.
RACE 3 – STEVE HARGREAVES (TWO-YEARS-OLD) MAIDEN HANDICAP DIV. 1 – 1,110 METRES
The explanation tendered by trainer S LEE for failing to declare a rider for FLAMING PRINCE by the prescribed time was accepted.
The start of this race was delayed several minutes when MALTESE PAPIA proved difficult to load in the barriers. Trainer J McCARTER was advised that he must obtain another Barrier Certificate for the gelding before it is permitted to race again.
HURCHARIOT was also difficult to load in the barriers and then became very fractious once in there dislodging N JOLLY who injured his right leg in the incident. HURCHARIOT was subsequently a late withdrawal at 1:09 p.m. by order of the Stewards. Prior to the announcement of ‘correct weight’ all monies invested on HURCHARIOT were ordered to be refunded with deductions of 6 cents in the dollar for a win and 7 cents for a place on the face value of the ticket. The representative for Trainer M TREMBLE was advised that he must obtain another Barrier Certificate for HURCHARIOT before that filly is permitted to race again. As N JOLLY was indisposed stewards permitted the following rider replacements:

Race 9 VIRGO’S DREAM A PATTILLO
On jumping DISTINCT DANGER shifted out abruptly hampering BANKER’S PRAYER which then lost considerable ground.
SURPRISED jumped away awkwardly.
When questioned regarding the performance of FLAMING PRINCE today, Jockey T DUCKETT explained that he was instructed to have his mount in a forward position and after jumping well he rode his mount hard in an effort to carry out his instructions however the colt was unable to muster sufficient speed to clear runners to his inside. He said that he then elected to steady his mount to take up a position closer to the fence. From that point his mount failed to travel at all and he was obliged to pull the stick on his mount at the 600 metres and it subsequently made up some ground in the straight. His explanation was noted.
RACE 4 – STEVE HARGREAVES (TWO-YEARS-OLD) MAIDEN HANDICAP DIV. 2 – 1,110 METRES
When questioned regarding the performance of MACARTHUR today, Jockey T DUCKETT explained that the gelding did not display any early speed whatsoever and failed to respond to his hard riding. Mr B CAMPBELL the representative for Trainer Ms. G WATERHOUSE explained that MACARTHUR was bred to race over longer distances and in his view was not suited to today’s track as it was difficult for horses to make up ground from behind and that MACARTHUR would be better suited over a journey longer than today’s event. A veterinary examination of MACARTHUR revealed no obvious abnormalities.
A veterinary examination of NANNY DOO after the race revealed that filly to be shin sore. Trainer N STEPHENS advised that NANNY DOO would now be sent for a spell.
RACE 5 – SON OF GOSH (FILLIES & MARES CLASS 1) HANDICAP – 1,110 METRES
THE MANAGERESS was examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon before the race and was passed fit to start after it was reported that the mare had become unsettled in its tie up stall.
COURTNEY GIRL and MARVELLE ADELE bumped on jumping.
TYCOON BABE was slowly away.
Stewards questioned Trainer B SHEEHAN regarding the performance of GOLDEN SUNSET today when it finished well beaten. He explained that GOLDEN SUNSET may be developing a virus and would now be sent for a spell.
RACE 6 – THE GRAND GOLF CLUB (COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES) CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1,110 METRES
The start of this race was delayed when RETIRE dislodged its rider J POLLARD behind the barriers. As J POLLARD was unfit to ride, RETIRE was ordered a late scratching by order of the Stewards at 2:55 p.m. Prior to the announcement of ‘correct weight’ all monies invested on RETIRE were ordered to be refunded with deductions of 13 cents in the dollar for a win and 12 cents for a place on the face value of the ticket. As J POLLARD was indisposed, stewards permitted the following rider replacements:
Race 7 HOT PROMISE A PATTILLO
Race 9 STRIKE FOREVER B COOPER
PRINCE WILBUR jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
RACE 7 – SHOPPING CENTRE CLEANING SERVICES (CLASS 2) HANDICAP – 1,205 METRES
Trainer L K TINSLEY was fined $100 for failing to have CANADIAN COMET on course by the prescribed time.
CAMAGIFI was a late withdrawal at 3:20 p.m. by order of the Stewards on veterinary advice that the gelding had injured itself in the barriers. There was no further alteration to betting.
LUK KAI LUK was obliged to race three horses wide for the majority of the race and was forced wide on the home turn. Its rider A MERRITT was obliged to stop riding several times in the straight when it had a tendency to lay in.
Near the 200 metres DONATA shifted out abruptly to obtain clear running and in doing so inconvenienced HOT PROMISE.
RACE 8 –GRAND MOTORS CLASS 3 HANDICAP – 2,015 METRES
JAY ELL was slowly away.
For some distance approaching the 1,400 metre turn SKY ROYAL which was over racing had to be checked away from the heels of DOODLE DANDY.
COME ON KENNY raced wide throughout the race.
A veterinary examination was ordered on HURRY HURRY after that gelding raced poorly. This revealed no obvious abnormalities. When questioned, Trainer P DUFF advised the stewards that HURRY HURRY had come to the end of its preparation and would now be sent for a spell.
RACE 9 – BRANNIGANS TAVERN CLASS 5 HANDICAP – 1,600 METRES
ARCH’S CHARGER was slowly away.
For some distance in the middle stages of the race TRIPLE SALCHOW over-raced and had to be restrained off the heels of HALOGEN.
MR. LAWSON suffered a bleeding attack from both nostrils and will now be ineligible to race for three months.
At no stage in the home straight could HALOGEN obtain clear running and subsequently went to the post not fully tested.
Stewards questioned trainer P MOODY regarding the improved performance of VIRGO’S DREAM today as compared with its last start at Toowoomba on 6 May 2000. He explained that VIRGO’S DREAM failed to handle the rain affected track conditions at its last start and that the gelding had performed poorly in the past on similar type tracks. His explanation was noted.
NINE WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED ALONG WITH MIGHTY MALTESE and MR. LAWSON.
