STEWARDS’ REPORT

GOLD COAST TURF CLUB

Monday, 26 June 2000

WEATHER: FINE TRACK: GOOD

RAIL: OUT 6 METRES

STEWARDS’
PANEL: MR T. BAILEY (CHAIRMAN), MR J. HAIGH, MR J. GRAHAM,
MR D. TAPSALL AND MR M. TUTT (CADET)

RACE 1 – ZUPPS TRUCKS HANDICAP – 1200 METRES

BYTRAIN and POWER VISION were slow away.

ESSWORR raced greenly in the early stages and approaching the 1000 metres had to be restrained off the heels of SEAMASCUS.

Inside the 200 metres JUST DIVINE had a tendency to hang in obliging its rider M. PRIVATO to stop riding and straighten his mount on at least one occasion.

APP. G. WILSON (SINGING VICTORY) was fined $50.00 for returning to scale in excess of one-half a kilo over her declared weight.

Mr S. Muir the stable representative for Trainer G. Ryan was questioned regarding the change of riding tactics adopted on ESSWORR today as compared to its last start at Ipswich on the 14th June, 2000. He explained that at the colt’s last start when ridden for speed it failed to run on therefore, he instructed Jockey S. GALLOWAY to ride ESSWORR back in the field today. Stewards advised Mr Muir that whilst they could understand the change of riding tactics, bearing in mind the horse’s previous poor performance, he was reminded of the Stable’s obligations under the Rules to notify such significant changes to the Stewards prior to the race.

Stewards ordered a Veterinary examination of SEAMASCUS after the race as a result of the filly finishing a distant last and this revealed no obvious abnormality. Jockey K. BELL reported that in his opinion the filly had a tendency to hold its breath. Trainer G. RAFTER advised Stewards that it was not his intentions to continue with SEAMASCUS and that she would more than likely pursue her racing career in lesser class races.

RACE 2 – QUEENSLAND PINE CO HANDICAP – 1300 METRES

PASCOE was a late withdrawal at 12.59 p.m. on Veterinary advice when the gelding was found to be lame in the near fore leg. Prior to the announcement of correct weight all monies invested on PASCOE were ordered to be refunded with deductions of 12 cents in the dollar for both a win and place on the face value of the ticket. Trainer P. Gillman was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness must be submitted for PASCOE before it is permitted to race again.

STRAUSSMAN was slow away.

In the early stages of the home straight CENTUPLE was disappointed for clear running and near the 200 metres shifted out abruptly to obtain clear running. This resulted in SALTY PLUM being steadied to avoid that horse’s heels. CENTUPLE continued to have a tendency to lay out for the remainder of the race.

Inside the final 200 metres CANADIAN SUCCESS had a tendency to hang out and as a result shifted ground several horses.

When questioned regarding the manner in which STRAUSSMAN was ridden today Jockey G. DOUGHTY explained that he was instructed to place the gelding where it was comfortable and refrain from putting the horse under too much pressure early to avoid being caught wide on the track. Due to the wide alley he elected to steady his mount early and put it under pressure approaching the 600 metres and in his view sufficient vigour in the straight. His explanation was noted.

RACE 3 – POWERTECH COMPUTERS HANDICAP – 1800 METRES

As T. PATTILLO was indisposed Stewards permitted J. POLLARD to be substituted as the rider of STARSHIP.

Prior to the race Stewards questioned Mr L. Birchley the stable representative for Trainer B. Mitchell regarding the proposed racing pattern of CROSS WORDS today, bearing in mind the horse’s first start in the area at the Gold Coast on the 10th June, 2000. Mr Birchley confirmed the instructions given to N. JOLLY on that particular day in that he was to ride the filly back as she had a tendency to overrace however, in his opinion on that particular day the instructions may have been slightly overdone.

NEDSYND was slowly away and lost considerable ground.

For a major part of the straight ALANNITE was disappointed for clear running.

RACE 4 – MOTORLINE GOLD COAST VOLVO HANDICAP – 2200 METRES

TRUE ENOUGH blundered shortly after the crossing near the 800 metre mark.

Mr M. Sims the representative for Trainer T. Whittington was questioned regarding the manner in which SIR ROCKAFELLA was ridden today as compared to its last three starts back from a spell. Mr Sims explained that when assessing the form in the race they had decided there was no noted leaders in the race and therefore Mr Whittington had instructed Jockey M. BENNETT if possible, to go forward on the horse today. His explanation was accepted.

Rounding the home turn NOTIFY NICK shifted out when under pressure and made contact with TRUE ENOUGH.

RACE 5 – FAR PAVILIONS HANDICAP – 1200 METRES

LET IT RIDE was slow away.

PAY THE GOLD overraced in the middle stages.

When questioned regarding the manner in which LET IT RIDE was ridden today M. TRAECEY explained that his instructions were to allow his mount to settle and that Trainer K. Newman indicated that the gelding was lacking race fitness and may be in need of the run. He said that soon after entering the home straight he endeavoured to shift out to obtain a clear run between CELENTO and OUT OF PARIS. However, approaching the 200 metres he was obliged to steady off the heels of OUT OF PARIS which shifted in and as a result he was obliged to go back to the fence. He further added that over the concluding stages his mount commenced to weaken and was inclined to lay in. His explanation was noted.

RACE 6 – CLAYPAVE HANDICAP – 1400 METRES

As APP. C. MALONEY was overweight Stewards permitted APP. J.P. STANLEY to be substituted as the rider of VIBRATIONS. APP. C. MALONEY was fined $50.00 for accepting a ride when found to be overweight.

As K. POPE was indisposed Stewards permitted A. BAKER to be substituted as the rider of VIENNA BLAZE.

Trainer J. Mahoney was fined $25.00 for presenting CAROUSELS without its blinkers.

When the pace slackened near the 1000 metres CHALEUR had to be checked off the heels of AL SECONDA. This resulted in VIBRATIONS which was following to be steadied and LIVELY LITTLE LADY to be checked to avoid VIBRATIONS’ heels. As a result of this incident the following riders were formerly addressed, J. POLLARD (SEMIFORMAL), S. KILLEN (SASSADASH), A. BAKER (VIENNA BLAZE), M. BENNETT (LIVELY LITTLE LADY), S. GALLOWAY (AL SECONDA), L. HILL (CHALEUR) and APP. J. BRYANT (MOODONG). Stewards advised those riders that bearing in mind the first 800 metres of the race had been run in a little over 50 seconds their safety was of utmost concern and an absolute priority and should riders continue to ride in such a manner further action may have to be considered.

Rounding the home turn ENCHANTED EVENING had to be steadied to avoid the heels of AL SECONDA which shifted out slightly.

Leaving the 300 metres BORN BRIGHT shifted out abruptly to improve making heavy contact with AL SECONDA which shifted out and hampered DAWN LANDING. A. MERRITT (BORN BRIGHT) was issued with a reprimand and reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

RACE 7 – LUCAS OILS HANDICAP – 1400 METRES

Trainer G. Newham was fined $25.00 for presenting PADDY’S GIFT without a tongue tie that being a part of the gelding’s approved gear.

RACE 8 – SOUTHSIDE FORD HANDICAP – 1300 METRES

As K. POPE was indisposed Stewards permitted A. ERHART to be substituted as the rider of ARRAPLEE.

VAUTIN was slow away.

CANNY’S GIRL suffered a bleeding attack during the race. As this was the filly’s second offence under the Rules it is now no longer eligible to compete in races.

EIGHT WINNERS PLUS CANNY’S GIRL WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
