GENERAL
Acting on a report from Stipendary Steward Mr D. Aurisch, Mr D. Bennett licensed trackwork rider was interviewed regarding being detected without a body protector when riding trackwork on Tuesday 15th May, 2001. Stewards accepted that Mr. Bennett had been using his vest during the trackwork session however, due to an oversight had not refitted the protector after removing it temporarily. D. Bennett was issued with a reprimand and warned of the consequences of failing to use this protective equipment.
RACE 1 – CONRAD JUPITERS MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1200 METRES
Trainer K.T. Smith was fined $50.00 for failing to declare a rider for ORMOLU by the prescribed time.
TRIUMPHAL ARCH and EXECUTIVE CLASS were both slow to begin.
LOOK FOR A STAR jumped inwards at the start hampering DAAM LUCKY.
ORMOLU jumped away awkwardly.
Passing the 800 metres ORMOLU had to be steadied away from the heels of RAYASAY which shifted out slightly.
DAAM LUCKY shifted out on the home turn forcing LAVROS PETE (NZ) extremely wide.
FOCUSED and EXECUTIVE CLASS were both obliged to race wide during the event.
RACE 2 – PRIME TELEVISION HANDICAP – 1400 METRES
DOFF raced wide making the home turn.
At the 200 metres LOS KATROS had to be checked when tightened for room between ON THE RUN which shifted out in an endeavour to obtain clear running and NEUTRAL SKY which shifted in whilst tiring.
W. MOORE the rider of fifth placegetter DOFF was reprimanded for failing to ride his mount out right to the finish line.
RACE 3 – AUCKLAND RACING CLUB HANDICAP – 1300 METRES
The start of this race was delayed when both ARGENTINA and FORGING’S LAD, which were fractious in the barriers, required inspection by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon.
MUSIC VIDEO was slow to begin.
Soon after the start PARLOUR GAMES shifted in and made contact with REGAL CLASS.
PARLOUR GAMES then continued to lay in resulting in REGAL CLASS and FOREST SPRITE being hampered.
Approaching the home turn PARLOUR GAMES had to be steadied to avoid the heels of JACK LIVES HERE which shifted in to the fence. G. BIRNEY the rider of JACK LIVES HERE was cautioned.
RACE 4 – CARBINE CLUB FLYING HANDICAP – 1200 METRES
KINCOURT jumped away awkwardly.
At the 1100 metres CITY FAIR (NZ) had to be steadied when cramped for room by CITICHY which was taken in by MOTHER’S GIFT.
SUPER COVET was momentarily held up at the entrance to the straight.
KINCOURT was held up for clear running over the concluding stages.
RACE 5 – CONRAD JUPITERS PRIME MINISTER’S CUP HANDICAP – 2400 METRES
As no other rider was available nearer to PADDY MALONEY’S allotted weight S. KATSIDIS was allowed to ride 1 ½ kilos overweight. S. KATSIDIS was fined the sum of $100.00.
Soon after the start KAZAKH BELLE overreacted when being tightened for room between MARKET PRICE and MR. SMUGG (NZ). In this incident KAZAKH BELLE got its head up and lost ground.
Leaving the 1600 metres SIR LANCELOT (NZ) had to be checked off the heels of MIGHTY COOL.
At the 600 metres CONAIR (NZ) had to be checked off the heels of INAFLURY when prevented from shifting out around the heels of that horse by YAMMER.
At the 400 metres MR. SMUGG (NZ) shifted out and brushed SIR LANCELOT (NZ) which in turn shifted out and inconvenienced REGAL TOUCH (NZ) and YIPPYIO.
A short distance later MR. SMUGG (NZ) again shifted out and bumped SIR LANCELOT (NZ) which overreacted and shifted out abruptly severely hampering REGAL TOUCH (NZ) and YIPPYIO. Both REGAL TOUCH (NZ) and YIPPYIO were forced extremely wide as a consequence. Whilst Stewards were satisfied that the second shift from MR. SMUGG (NZ) was influenced by MIGHTY COOL which had a tendency to shift out at the home turn C. MUNCE the rider of MR. SMUGG (NZ) was nonetheless reprimanded and urged to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
When YIPPYIO was forced out abruptly on the home turn YAMMER and DANYON were also severely hampered.
Jockey M. CAHILL was fined $100.00 for weighing in in excess of ½ kilo overweight on the third placegetter VITRINITE (NZ).
RACE 6 – H. HARVEY KEN RUSSELL MEMORIAL CLASSIC – 1300 METRES
ALLEZ FRANCE jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
RUN JUST RUN jumped out at the start bumping heavily with SHEPHERD’S LIL.
Upon straightening PALIDAMAH shifted out around the heels of RUN JUST RUN which was hanging out resulting in JUANMO being taken out onto TYCOON JESTER, which in turn bumped BARAWIN. This resulted in TYCOON JESTER and BARAWIN becoming unbalanced.
BARAWIN and TYCOON JESTER again came in contact at the 300 metres.
ALLEZ FRANCE was unable to obtain clear running at any stage in the straight.
J. TAYLOR the rider of PALIDAMAH was admonished for allowing his mount to shift in under pressure which resulted in his mount bumping DISTINCTIVE DANCER soon after the post.
The Club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported that DISTINCTIVE DANCER was found to be lame in the off hind leg subsequent to the event.
RACE 7 – PAULS A.D. HOLLINDALE STAKES WEIGHT FOR AGE – 1800 METRES
SAILOR’S LARK and LOTTERY PRIZE (NZ) were both slow away.
GO FLASH GO failed to negotiate the first turn and shifted out abruptly across the heels of KIWI HERO (NZ) and had to be checked.
Upon entering the home straight GO FLASH GO was hampered slightly when bumped by CAMARENA which was inclined to lay in.
Approaching the 200 metres GO FLASH GO again became unbalanced after receiving contact from CAMARENA (NZ) which shifted in slightly. J. BYRNE the rider of CAMARENA was cautioned.
A Veterinary examination of KIWI HERO (NZ) which compounded badly from the 500 metres revealed the gelding had sustained a laceration to the outside of the near hind leg.
RACE 8 – VON BIBRA GOLD COAST HONDA HANDICAP – 1800 METRES
Due to a clerical error D. BEASLEY was inadvertently displayed as the rider of MANZEAL (NZ) when in fact the gelding was ridden by L. BEASLEY.
After riding STARTELL in Race 7 S. KATSIDIS became ill and was obliged to forego his ride on BEACON. As some considerable delay occurred in finding a replacement rider for BEACON the starting time for this race was delayed. J. TAYLOR eventually was the replacement rider on BEACON.
Approaching the 1600 metres DESK TOP LOVER ran up onto the heels of ALMIGHTY ALLIANCE and had to be checked.
Rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight ALMIGHTY ALLIANCE was badly held up for clear running. Approaching the 300 metres ALMIGHTY ALLIANCE shifted out around the heels of FRENCH TILT (NZ), DESK TOP LOVER which had improved to the outside of the heels of ALMIGHTY ALLIANCE had to be restrained. Given the degree of difficulty that G. KILLEN (ALMIGHTY ALLIANCE) had experienced the Stewards took no action.
A Veterinary examination of HAPPY EMPEROR (NZ) which compounded badly from the 500 metres revealed
The gelding to be suffering from respiratory distress.
EIGHT WINNERS PLUS CAMARENA (NZ), GALACTIC GIRL, SAMMY AND MR. SMUGG(NZ) WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
