STEM THE TIDE which made heavy contact with the running rail in its preliminaries was examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.

MOONBI CHIEF jumped in at the start and made heavy contact with PAT’S ORPHAN.

ARCTIC RED had a tendency to over-race in the early and middle stages.

THE MIRACLE made the home turn awkwardly and shifted out and made contact with BROCOLU.

Approaching the 150 metres AQUATAI had to be steadied when ARCTIC RED shifted in despite the efforts of its rider. At the same time the tiring CLUB PORT shifted out and made contact with the hindquarters of STEM THE TIDE.

THE MIRACLE raced greenly in the straight.

RACE 2 – ARCHITECTURAL COLUMNS (CLASS 4) HANDICAP – 1,200 METRES

OZZEL was slowly away.

Shortly after the start HOOKMAN shifted in and made contact with GOLDEN DUO.

RACE 3 – VILLABOARD™ LINING (FILLIES AND MARES) CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1,300 METRES

On jumping DONBRODI was severely hampered between EXTRAVAGANT which shifted in and TABASCO GIRL which shifted out.

Approaching the home turn LADY VETTORI shifted out to improve and made contact with FANCY LILY which became unbalanced.

M SMITH-LESTER reported that on jumping his right knee made heavy contact with the side partition of the starting gate. M SMITH-LESTER further added that he was unable to fully test his mount for the remainder of the race. M SMITH-LESTER was subsequently examined by an ambulance officer and was stood down. Therefore the following rider replacements were made:

Race 4 SEQUIK M BENNETT
Race 5 ATLANTA FLYER K MAHONEY
Race 6 IMPOSITION M PAGET
Race 7 SEND A DIVA C WHITELEY

RACE 4 – PRIMELINE™ WEATHERBOARDS (THREE-YEARS-OLD) MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,300 METRES

Stewards considered an objection lodged by M PAGET the rider of THUNDER HAWK which finished 3rd against BLACK HULA (K PURDY) being declared the 2nd placegetter on the grounds of alleged interference on the home turn. After viewing the video and taking evidence from all parties, it was established that the degree of interference suffered by THUNDER HAWK exceeded the margin between the two horses at the finish and the objection was upheld and the placings amended to read:-

1st – 11
2nd – 6
3rd – 12

At a subsequent inquiry it was established that K PURDY had angled her mount out behind the tiring NIGHT ECHO and made contact with THUNDER HAWK on a number of occasions resulting in THUNDER HAWK becoming unbalanced and forced wider on the track. PLAY A HULA and PHIL THE FLASHER which were racing to the outside of THUNDER HAWK were also forced wider on the track. K PURDY was severely reprimanded and reminded of her obligations when shifting ground.

SMALL PROMISE and GOBI GABBANA made contact on jumping.

PHIL THE FLASHER was slowly away.

After passing the 800 metres ALL INNOCENCE had to be steadied off the heels of THUNDER HAWK which shifted out.

Nearing the 200 metres SMALL PROMISE had to steady between TELLY’S GANG and the tiring NIGHT ECHO.

Trainer G RYAN’s foreman Mr BRUCE HILL was questioned regarding the improved performance of PLAY A HULA today, he stated that at PLAY A HULA’s first start the filly was not suited by the track conditions and since then the stable has trialed PLAY A HULA in blinkers and he was of the opinion that today’s gear change played a part in the improved performance of the filly. Mr Hill’s comments were noted.

A veterinary examination of SMALL PROMISE after the race revealed no abnormalities and the gelding was sent to be swabbed.

RACE 5 – PINE RIDGE™ LINING (CLASS 2) HANDICAP – 900 METRES

RAGING RULA knuckled at the start and lost ground.

ATLANTA FLYER and KIMANI were slow to begin.

For some distance after passing the 900 metres PALAZZIO was buffeted between DINNASNAP and MASTER ALANNON which had a tendency to lay in. RAGING RULA which was following had to be checked off the heels of PALAZZIO and shifted out abruptly resulting in ATLANTA FLYER also having to be checked off the heels of KIMANI.

After this incident ATLANTA FLYER commenced to over-race for some distance.

Approaching the 200 metres KIMANI shifted in and made contact with RAGING RULA.

Over the concluding stages DIAL A STAR shifted out under pressure and nearing the line ACE CLUB had to be steadied off DIAL A STAR’s heels.

RACE 6 – HARDITEX™ BASE SHEETS (COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES) CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1,300 METRES

IMPOSITION was slow to jump.

RACE 7 – HARDIBRACE™ BRACING (CLASS 6) HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES

REGAL ARCHWAY was obliged to race wide for the majority of the event.

Stewards questioned APP. D GAY in the presence of Trainer T SWEENEY regarding the riding tactics adopted on LONG LONG VIVID. Trainer T Sweeney stated that he instructed App. Gay to place the gelding in a rearward position as it was the first time over this distance for the present trainer. Stewards questioned App. Gay in relation to his ride between the 800 and 400 metres. He stated that after steadying his mount early, he took up a rearward position in the field however, he stated that he may have erred in his decision not to place the gelding into the race sooner than he did. Stewards noted Trainer T Sweeney’s and App. D Gay’s comments.

RACE 8 – HARDIFLEX™ EAVES LINING (CLASS 3) HANDICAP – 1,800 METRES

Approaching the home turn NORTHERN INDIES had to be steadied when BOOEYHACKER shifted out slightly.

SUTRA was obliged to race wide for the majority of the race.

The club’s veterinary surgeon reported that NORTHERN INDIES had bled from the near side nostril.

CERTAIN SOUND which finished a distant last was examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon who found the gelding to be showing signs of cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer G HEINRICH was advised that CERTAIN SOUND must trial to the satisfaction of the stewards and a veterinary certificate of soundness must be provided prior to the horse’s next race start.

EIGHT WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
