RACE 1 – ALFRED E. CHAVE PTY LTD (THREE-YEARS-OLD) MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES

As R PITTMAN was injured in a race fall at Esk on 14 September 2001, the following rider replacements were made:

Race 1 COMIC KING A BEST
Race 2 ELORAC M McDONALD
Race 5 PRAY LATER A BEST
Race 7 AUTUMNWOOD M McDONALD
Race 8 HAWAIIAN HONEYMOON C PROSSER

A warning was issued to the connections of COMIC KING which proved difficult to load.

AGAIN A GAIN proved difficult to load thereby delaying the start. The connections were requested to provide a further Barrier Certificate for AGAIN A GAIN before racing again.

OFFICE HOURS jumped outwards at the start taking ANELECT out on to UNBRIDLED MELODY.

Approaching the 800 metres COMIC KING became unbalanced and appeared to strike the running rail. PESTULANCE which was following had to be checked and shifted out on to the heels of PALOMINE GOLD which was also inconvenienced. A BEST reported that his saddle shifted causing COMIC KING to become unbalanced and contact the running rail. A short distance later COMIC KING had to be checked off the heels of CUDDLIN’ and shifted out causing PALOMINE GOLD to be hampered.

A veterinary examination of ANELECT following the race revealed that the horse sustained a laceration to the near hind cannon as a consequence of being galloped on.

RACE 2 – OWEN’S METAL ROOFING PROFESSIONALS MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,300 METRES

A warning was issued to the connections of DASH O’ LUCK which proved difficult to load.

MURRIAH jumped in at the start and hampered RISKY DEAL which jumped awkwardly.

Near the 500 metres RISKY DEAL had to be eased momentarily when HOT COLLAR shifted in slightly.

Approaching the finishing line TRIPLE GENIUS was inclined to shift out under pressure brushing BROCOLU.

RACE 3 – NO LIMIT (CLASS 5) HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES

UNIQUE was slow to jump.

An inquiry was held into the seemingly disappointing performance of REGAL ARCHWAY which did not finish the race off as anticipated. Trainer G STEWART explained that he instructed App. HAMMERSLEY to ride REGAL ARCHWAY patiently in the early stages, attempt to race with cover and hold the horse up until approximately 300 metres from the finish as REGAL ARCHWAY only possesses a sprint of approximately 300 metres. He explained that he had also requested P HAMMERSLEY to endeavour to trail another runner around the home turn rather than go wide. After analysing the sectional times G STEWART explained that whilst he was satisfied with P HAMMERSLEY’s handling of REGAL ARCHWAY he was disappointed with the horse’s performance and felt that it should have finished the race off better than it did. Stewards ordered a veterinary examination of REGAL ARCHWAY which revealed no obvious abnormalities. Following the horse’s performance G STEWART advised that he would monitor it over the days subsequent to the race and should he find anything amiss with REGAL ARCHWAY which would have had an effect on its performance, he undertook to notify stewards.

RACE 4 – PACIFIC FAIR (COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES – CLASS 1) HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES

DANISKY was examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon after completing its preliminary and was found to be suitable to race.

OVERSLADE LANE was also examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon after sustaining a laceration in its mouth. The club’s veterinary surgeon was satisfied that the horse was fit to start after having bitten its tongue.

READY TO REV jumped away awkwardly.

SABAI SABAI was held up rounding the home turn and for some distance in the straight.

RACE 5 – KURRAWA SUPPORTERS CLUB (CLASS 4) HANDICAP – 900 METRES

MARVELLE ADELE became fractious in the barriers and got its head down dislodging G PALMER. SHERLOCK which was drawn beside MARVELLE ADELE took fright and became fractious injuring itself in the barriers. A veterinary examination of SHERLOCK revealed that the horse sustained lacerations and multiple bruising and was not in a fit state to race. Stewards ordered the withdrawal of SHERLOCK at 3:18 p.m. following advice from the veterinary surgeon. Prior to the announcement of correct weight all monies invested on SHERLOCK were ordered to be refunded with deductions of 8 cents in the dollar for a win and 9 cents for a place on the face value of the ticket. Following the behaviour of MARVELLE ADELE in the barriers that horse was also examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon however, it was found to be suitable to race. The connections of MARVELLE ADELE were requested to provide a further Barrier Certificate prior to its next start.

ADAM’S REEF was slow to jump.

GRAND EXPRESS was hampered just after the start between EZEZOFF and BENLANE when both horses shifted ground marginally.

Near the 700 metres INNOVARI had to be eased away from the heels of PRAY LATER.

RACE 6 – PACIFIC FAIR (FILLIES AND MARES – CLASS 1) HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES

SAUVETERRE was slow to jump and lost ground at the start.

Approaching the first turn SAUVETERRE was hampered when racing in restricted room inside FICKLE FANCY and KEA LEAH.

Near the 800 metres LADY PEKAN shifted away from the rails and made contact with DR CILENTO forcing that horse wider on the track.

After commencing a run wide on the track at the 700 metres SEALINER was obliged to race wide for the remainder of the race.

When under pressure approaching the home turn FICKLE FANCY became unbalanced when coming in contact with SAUVETERRE.

Near the 200 metres THE LADY TABATHA when under pressure became unbalanced.

RACE 7 – MICHAEL BROWN (CLASS 2) HANDICAP – 1,200 METRES

Shortly after the start MIXED shifted in taking NEWTONIAN in on to SPLENDENT MISSILE and TELKALA. As a consequence of being tightened SPLENDENT MISSILE shifted in on several occasions and made heavy contact with TELKALA unbalancing that horse.

Rounding the first turn HOW HIGH SIR shifted out and made contact with SPLENDENT MISSILE.

After passing the 200 metres LOW HIGH SIR had to be checked when taking a run in restricted room inside AUTUMNWOOD which was briefly tightened by SEASIDE SUCCESS. M TRAECEY rider of SEASIDE SUCCESS was cautioned and advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

An inquiry was held into the seemingly disappointing performance of TELKALA. Jockey C WHITELEY explained that after being bumped by SPLENDENT MISSILE on a number of occasions in the early stages he was then caught three wide and unable to position the horse any closer to the rails. After straightening TELKALA failed to respond to his riding and did not finish the race off as anticipated. He further explained that at its previous start the horse raced on the rails and felt that it may not have been suited to racing wide as was the case today. Trainer’s representative, Mrs S Thompson, reported that the horse was disappointing two runs back and on that occasion raced away from the rails and was subsequently found to have a respiratory problem following an endoscopic examination. Mrs Thompson was also of the opinion that TELKALA may be better suited racing inside horses rather than being caught wide. A veterinary examination of TELKALA failed to reveal any abnormalities and the horse was sent to be swabbed. Mrs Thompson also undertook to advise stewards of anything that may come to notice or the results of any subsequent veterinary tests which may have had any bearing on the horse’s performance today.

RACE 8 – SURFERS PARADISE MARRIOTT RESORT (CLASS 3) HANDICAP – 1,800 METRES

Trainer P STRONG was fined $25 for presenting FEEL THE BLUES to race with blinkers.

On jumping FEEL THE BLUES shifted in making heavy contact with QUARRY HAWK.

Making the first turn SUPER RESILIENT shifted out and made contact with SEMI IMPOSING. As a consequence SEMI IMPOSING then got its head up and raced ungenerously rounding the first turn.

Near the 1,400 metres GAVEL shifted in and brushed SINGING STORY.

Leaving the 1,300 metres PIANO LADY shifted in momentarily tightening MAST.

HAWAIIAN HONEYMOON was caught wide rounding the first turn and was obliged to race wide for the entire race.

Leaving the 800 metres TOODALOO had to be steadied away from the heels of MAST.

TOODALOO had difficulty obtaining clear running in the straight.

EIGHT WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED ALONG WITH TELKALA.
