STEWARDS REPORT GOLD COAST TURF CLUB SATURDAY 3 MAY, 2003

RACE 1: KURRAWA SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB 2-Y-O MAIDEN H'CAP - 1300 M.

DELICATA jumped away awkwardly.

A short distance after the start KERIDWEN commenced to race ungenerously with its head in the air and as a result shifted in making heavy contact with the hind quarters of KEEZADAN.

Approaching the first turn KERIDWEN continued to race ungenerously and rounding the first turn shifted in and made contact with the running rail.

Leaving the 800 metres AIDAN JAMES shifted out and had to be steadied off the heels of OPPOSITE.

KERIDWEN continued to race ungenerously for the remainder of the event.

A postrace veterinary examination of KERIDWEN revealed a scalping wound to the off hind pastern.

Trainer P. Wheatley's representative was advised that KERIDWEN must barrier trial to the steward's satisfaction prior to racing again.



RACE 2: RAINE & HORNE BROADBEACH 3-Y-O MAIDEN H'CAP - 1400 M.

TREBOR was declared at late withdrawal at 1.04 p.m. by order of the stewards after it dislodged its rider D. Craven in the preliminary. In this incident D. Craven injured his right knee. Prior to the announcement of correct weight all monies invested on TREBOR were ordered to be refunded with deductions of 2 cents in the dollar for a win and 2 cents for a place on the face value of the ticket.

On return to scale a protest was lodged by Mr E. Nicholls the trainer of 2nd placegetter LION HUNT (M. Yoshinaga), against YODELLING DIXIE (A. Kennedy) being declared the winner, alleging interference over the concluding stages. It was established that inside the 100 metres LION HUNT which was inclined to lay in under pressure, shifted towards the running rail and attempted to obtain a run to the inside of YODELLING DIXIE. Approaching the 50 metres YODELLING DIXIE shifted in under pressure and LION HUNT was obliged to steady and alter course to the outside of that runner's heels. Stewards however were not satisfied that LION HUNT ever had full purchase on the run to the inside of YODELLING DIXIE and as a result the objection was dismissed.

ROSE OF HENNESSY reared at the start and lost ground.

SQUEEL and MUKTI came together at the start.

A short distance later IRISH PUNT shifted in and crowded MUKTI onto SQUEEL.

Approaching the 1000 metres AQUA D'OR raced in restricted room to the inside of KAVANAGH.

Rounding the first turn BETTYMAC which was racing ungenerously had to be steadied when placed in restricted room inside KAVANAGH.

When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of KAVANAGH. B. Swanton stated that at no stage throughout the event did the colt travel comfortably and furthermore, it did not finish the race off as anticipated. This explanation was noted. A postrace veterinary examination of KAVANAGH failed to reveal any abnormality.

Following this event D. Craven was examined by the Club's doctor who stood him down for his ride in Race 3. Subsequently D. Craven was replaced by D. Green as the rider of BUZZER in that event.


RACE 3: PACIFIC FAIR SHOPPING CENTRE PLATE - 1300 M.

BANKERS MAGIC jumped away awkwardly.

Rounding the first turn NORTHERN ALPS when racing greenly blundered after striking the heels of BARBARIAN which shifted out when being restrained off the heels of BUZZER.

App. L. Fitzsimmons the rider of ZIPPY DAN pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that leaving the 200 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear resulting in HELEN'S FORTUNE having to be checked. App. Fitzsimmons' licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of eight (8) meetings to commence midnight 8 May, 2003 and to expire after Wednesday 21 May, 2003.

D. Craven was re-examined by the Club's doctor and cleared to resume riding.


RACE 4: CREDIFLEX CLASS 2 H'CAP - 2200 M.

PRESS jumped away awkwardly.

RATIO knuckled over at the start.

RATIO raced awkwardly rounding the 1600 metre turn and had to be steadied off the heels of CHEERFULLY.



RACE 5: AUSTRALIAN-AMERICAN ASSOCIATION (GOLD COAST DIVISION) BATTLE OF THE CORAL SEA CUP - 1200 M.

SIGHTED jumped in at the start and made contact with FOOLISH GOLD.

Rounding the first turn IT'S NOT LUCK when being steadied shifted in and made contact with the running rail. As a result IT'S NOT LUCK shifted out and made heavy contact with NEWTOWN LAD.

KING RUBY was obliged to race wide throughout.

Leaving the 500 metres NUMERO had to steady off the heels of MOBY which shifted in momentarily.

Shortly after entering the straight until inside the 200 metres NUMERO was impeded for clear running when racing to the inside of NEWTOWN LAD which was inclined to shift in under pressure.

IT'S NOT LUCK suffered a bleeding attack during the event. Trainer Ms M. Thexton was advised that IT'S NOT LUCK would incur the mandatory three(3) month ban from racing.

When questioned regarding the improved performance of STARVAIN LADY trainer T. Gollan stated that at the filly's previous start at Toowoomba on 19 April, 2003 she had performed disappointingly in finishing last after racing without cover. He further added that in today's event STARVAIN LADY raced with cover and he had anticipated an improved performance with the advent of a gear change. This explanation was noted.


RACE 6: HEYDON HARVEY SMASH REPAIRS CLASS 3 H'CAP - 1200 M.

Trainer R. McCall was fined the sum of $50.00 for late notification of rider for ST. MALO.

AN HONOR was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon at the barriers at the request of Jockey A. Kennedy and passed fit to start.

ANNIHILATOR jumped away awkwardly.

AYNSLEY GOLD jumped out at the start and made contact with PASSION MISS.

Rounding the first turn BAA HA had to be steadied to avoid the heels of DEFINITE DECISION which layed out despite the efforts of its rider.

JUST A BELIEVER was obliged to race wide throughout the event.

After entering the home straight until inside the 200 metres BAA HA was held up for clear running.



RACE 7: AHC LIMITED CLASS 5 H'CAP - 1000 M.

YOUTHFUL LODGER was slow to begin.

TOPEKO was tightened for room at the start between KING SHALFORD and STARGAZER BEAUTY which was taken out by QUALO.

Approaching the 600 metres RETIRE shifted in and made heavy contact with the running rail.

For some distance inside the 300 metres RETIRE was unable to improve when attempting a narrow run to the inside of the tiring BANDIERA.

When questioned regarding his riding of RETIRE in the early stages of the event App. M. Yoshinaga stated that he was instructed to ride the gelding quietly in the early stages and to commence his run from the 600 metres. He added that in his opinion the gelding failed to stretch out and did not feel comfortable in the early stages of the race due to the cut up state of the track. This explanation was noted.


RACE 8: PAYNTER DIXON CLASS 2 H'CAP - 1400 M.

PRIDE OF PARIS jumped out at the start and tightened SPICY BELLE and NATURAL LIL onto TOUCH OF MOOBALL. As a result MISS CLARET which was to the outside had to be steadied off the heels of TOUCH OF MOOBALL.

Approaching the first turn MISS CLARET commenced to race fiercely when being restrained off the heels of NATURAL LIL. MISS CLARET then continued to race fiercely in the middle stages when being restrained off the heels of CORAL BAY.

Leaving the 500 metres SEA SIOUX had to be steadied to avoid the heels of the tiring CORAL BAY.

App. D. Gay was fined the sum of $150.00 for returning to scale in excess of 1/2 kilo overweight.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of SUSCITARE App. A. Best stated that the gelding raced in a handy position in the early and middle stages but when placed under pressure at the 600 metres dropped the bit and commenced to compound. A postrace veterinary examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormality. Trainer B. Guy could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance and undertook to advise the Stewards if anything came to light with the gelding in the ensuing days.
