WEATHER - FINE TRACK - DEAD
RAIL - OUT 6M FROM 1000 - 400M; OUT 5M FOR REMAINDER
RACE 1: FRIDAY RACING - JULY 25 H'CAP (QTIS TWO-YEARS-OLD MAIDEN) - 1300M
Trainer S Phelps was fined $50 for failing to notify App. R Hurley as the rider of BINGS BLUE GIRL by the prescribed time.
ART STUDENT was slow to jump and lost considerable ground.
MERTHYR ROAD jumped away awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with MILKMAN.
Approaching the 800m KEAVE HOUSE had to be steadied off the heels of REBACEDA and shifted out abruptly taking MERTHYR ROAD wider on the track.
MERTHYR ROAD was obliged to race wide for the majority of the event.
At the entrance to the straight, JUST A GENERAL had to be steadied off the heels of the tiring MERTHYR ROAD.
Approaching the 200m ART STUDENT which was racing greenly shifted in and made heavy contact with REBACEDA resulting in both runners becoming unbalanced.
Over the concluding stages LA TAR was momentarily held up for a run and shifted out taking CIMARRON TRAIL wider on the track.
When Jockey N Day was questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of MERTHYR ROAD, he stated that the gelding was hampered on jumping and after passing the 800m was forced to race wider on the track when taken out by another runner. N Day further stated that the gelding from that point on failed to respond to his riding and in his opinion the run was disappointing. A post race veterinary examination of MERTHYR ROAD failed to reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 2: 92.5 GOLD FM H'CAP (QTIS THREE-YEARS-OLD MAIDEN) - 1200M
LOOPY jumped away awkwardly and lost considerable ground. Trainer B Mackay was advised that LOOPY must obtain a further Barrier Certificate prior to its next start.
NORTHERN BROKER was slow to begin.
CORAL SUNDAY jumped away awkwardly.
Passing the 700m MISS JONES had to be steadied off the heels of WATCH MY DUST. At the same stage NORTHERN BROKER also had to be steadied off the heels of TOO MUCH TROUBLE which shifted back in.
A Best, the rider of WATCH MY DUST, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that at the 300m he angled his mount out to improve which resulted in SEA SCRIPT being taken out on to TOO MUCH TROUBLE which resulted in NORTHERN BROKER having to be checked, clipping the heels of TOO MUCH TROUBLE and blundering nearly dislodging Jockey C Whiteley. A Best was suspended for a period of 10 meetings to commence at midnight 2 July 2003 and expire at midnight 19 July 2003.
Approaching the home turn NORTHERN BROKER was taken wider on the track by TOO MUCH TROUBLE.
RACE 3: MARBLE BAR & BISTRO H'CAP (QTIS THREE-YEARS-OLD MAIDEN) - 1200m
TEAKER'S BLUE STAR and GLORIADA were slow to jump.
K Pope reported that GALLANT HARRY had a tendency to lay out through the event.
RACE 4: REGENT TAXIS PLATE (MAIDEN) - 1400M
Stewards adjourned an inquiry into the reason why A Kennedy was listed as the rider of JOE JITSU. Subsequently M WILLIAMSON was declared the rider.
During the preliminary SALENTINO which threw itself down in the enclosure was subsequently examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.
ESTOC was slow to jump.
SALENTINO jumped in at the start and made contact with ULTRA MODERN.
After passing the 900m when the pace slackened, JOE JITSU had to be steadied off the heels of ESTOC.
ULTRA MODERN was obliged to race wide for the majority of the event.
In the straight SALENTINO had a tendency to lay out under pressure.
RACE 5: CHANDLERS - ROBINA SUPERSTORE & AUSTRALIA FAIR H'CAP (MAIDEN) - 1800M
RUBYTANA was slow to jump.
Shortly after the start COVET IN CASH shifted out taking SQUEEL out on to IN SURFERS.
Approaching the home turn THE BEAT GOES ON shifted in abruptly despite the efforts of its rider, resulting in the tiring IN SURFERS having to be checked.
At the entrance to the straight M Traecey (WORKING CLASS MAN) accidentally dropped his whip.
RACE 6: KIRRA BEACH HOTEL H'CAP (FILLIES AND MARES CLASS 1) - 1400M
As D Craven was stood down by the club's doctor, Stewards permitted M Traecey to be replaced as the rider of KAWENDE.
ROLLING ALONG and CHICKEN LITTLE made contact on jumping.
Approaching the 800m MIDNIGHT JEWEL which had a tendency to over-race, shifted out and had to be steadied off the heels of CHICKEN LITTLE.
Passing the 600m ROLLING ALONG had to be steadied off the heels of FRENCH LA REV.
Approaching the home turn ROLLING ALONG (D Green) shifted out taking DANCER'S EDGE and KAWENDE wider on the track. Stewards advised D Green to exercise greater care when shifting ground. ROLLING ALONG then had a tendency to lay in in the straight.
RACE 7: EXTREME AUTO TRIMMING H'CAP (COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES CLASS 1) - 1400M
PRINCE OF PEMM jumped away awkwardly and made contact with the side partition becoming unbalanced and dislodging App. D Gay. As a result of this incident D Gay suffered an injury to his right knee. ON THE LAKE had to be steadied to avoid the riderless horse.
REPOSSESSION and ZIP IT UP made contact on jumping.
Stewards questioned Trainer S Jones and Jockey B Calkin regarding the riding tactics adopted on REPOSSESSION in today's event. Jockey Calkin stated that he was instructed to go forward and lead from his wide alley as the colt races at its best in this position. Jockey Calkin further stated that the horse travelled freely in the early and middle stages of the event and was of the opinion that the horse was racing within itself. When placed under pressure at the 500m REPOSSESSION continued to go forward but over the concluding stages weakened out of the event. Trainer S Jones confirmed the riding instructions as he was of the opinion that REPOSSESSION does perform well when able to lead. Their explanations were noted.
RACE 8: 90.9 SEA FM HANDICAP (CLASS 3) - 1800M
BAG LADY was slow to jump.
CENTRAL BANKER jumped away awkwardly.
PROTECTED SPECIES was obliged to race wide for the majority of the event.
WAITAWHERO GOLD raced in restricted room from the 700m until passing the 400m when PROTECTED SPECIES (B Calkin) shifted in when not clear which resulted in WAITAWHERO GOLD having to be steadied. B Calkin was reprimanded and advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.
RACE 9: CARLTON DRAUGHT GOLDMARKET - AUGUST 20 HANDICAP (CLASS 5) - 1400M
As App D Gay was stood down by the club's doctor, Stewards permitted App. D Ballard to be replaced as the rider of EUROSYMBOL.
BIOKOVO jumped away awkwardly.
Approaching the 500m COCKY CRUISER dipped of its own accord.
Approaching the home turn AWESOME WARRIOR was momentarily held up behind the tiring BILLY CART HILL.
App. M Spriggs (AWESOME WARRIOR) accidentally dropped his whip at the 100m.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of COCKY CRUISER, Jockey D Browne stated that the gelding travelled well until the 500m and at that stage of the race stumbled of its own accord and lost all momentum. Jockey Browne further stated that he was of the belief that COCKY CRUISER had suffered an injury and commenced to ease him out of the race. A veterinary examination of COCY CRUISER failed to reveal any abnormality. Trainer G Stewart undertook to bring to the attention of the stewards anything which came to light within the next 48 hours.
