FATHER DEX and FOREIGN CAPITAL raced wide throughout.

Near the 500m BRAKSPEAR (G McCarthy) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of THE BRAVE ONE which was laying in. THE BRAVE ONE continued to hang in and raced ungenerously for the remainder of the event.

Leaving the 300m LEGAL GIANT (M Bennett) shifted out taking THE BRAVE ONE on to BRAKSPEAR. A short distance later LEGAL GIANT again shifted out hampering THE BRAVE ONE. M Bennett the rider of LEGAL GIANT was advised to exercise more care in future.

A post race veterinary examination of BOLSHEVIK BOY which failed to take any competitive part in the event revealed the gelding to be sore in the near fore leg. Stable representative for Trainer M Flanigan was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness must be provided before the gelding’s next race start.

Race 4: Terry White Chemists Pacific Fair (Class 3) H’cap – 900m.
1st – Watapen 2nd – Blushing Dane 3rd – Sesacious 4th - Langlaw

Correct weight was delayed to allow Jockey P Hammersley to view the film of the start to assess whether he had been afforded a fair start. During this inquiry it was established that both P Hammersley (BEAUMONTE) and T Treichel’s (RUM STRIKER) gates were marginally slow to open, however, in the opinion of the Stewards this did not materially prejudice the chances of those two runners and therefore the Stewards declared both horses runners and gave correct weight on the numbers semaphored.

MINI VIEW (App. M Palmer) raced wide throughout the event.

BLUSHING DANE (A Best) hung in for a short distance near the 600m.

Leaving the 600m RUM STRIKER improved up on to the heels of BLUSHING DANE and had to be steadied.

When questioned regarding the improved performance of WATAPEN, Trainer L Kelly stated that at the mare’s previous two starts it had been forced to race wide and as a result was unable to finish those races off.

1st – Captain Biggles 2nd – Russian Advocate 3rd – No More Grey 4th – One for the Road

MARFIA HUNTER was a late withdrawal at 3.07 pm on vet’s advice when the gelding sustained an injury to its near hind leg in the stall area. Prior to the announcement of correct weight all monies invested on MARFIA HUNTER were ordered to be refunded. All winning bets were ordered to be paid less 31 cents in the dollar for a win and 21 cents for a place on the face value of the ticket. Stable representative for Trainer D Sutton was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness must be provided before the colt’s next race start.

NO MORE GREY (P Hammersley) was slow to begin.

THE POSTMASTER (C Eaton) jumped away awkwardly.

COFFEE TIME (T Treichel) jumped out at the start and made contact with ONE FOR THE ROAD (C Small).

D Barron the rider of PICAPAL was severely reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in leaving the 1200m when not sufficiently clear of NO MORE GREY resulting in that horse having to be steadied.

ONE FOR THE ROAD commenced to over-race leaving the 1100m and when being restrained threw its head in the air. ONE FOR THE ROAD continued to over-race until leaving the 800m.

COTOPAXI (M Bennett) raced three wide throughout the event.

NO MORE GREY was held up for clear running and unable to improve rounding the home turn.

Race 7: Melbas Restaurant (Class 3) H’cap – 1300m.
1st – Mrs Mango 2nd – Tellasecret 3rd - Telfire 4th – Can Man

Stewards considered objections lodged by D Barron the rider of CAN MAN which finished 4th against T Treichel (TELLASECRET) the 2nd placegetter and M Bennett (MRS MANGO) being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference inside the final 50m. Whilst it was established that near the 20m CAN MAN had to be checked when attempting a narrow run between TELLASECRET and MRS MANGO both of which shifted ground, Stewards were of the opinion that given the close proximity of the incident to the winning post the interference suffered did not materially affect the placings and therefore dismissed both objections. At a subsequent inquiry all riders involved were advised to exercise care in similar circumstances.

TELFIRE (N Day), CAN MAN and BUCK ‘N’ JAZZ (L Morrison) over-raced in the early stages.

TELLASECRET raced wide in the early and middle stages.

Race 8: Terry White Chemists Runaway Bay (Class 2) H’cap – 1800m .
1st – Mezzegie 2nd – Catbird Seat 3rd – Pre Commitment 4th – Proceed to Warn

TIMBERS (N Day) made the 1500m turn ungenerously and over-raced for some distance thereafter.

AIRLINE EXPRESS (C Small) raced wide in the early and middle stages.

Leaving the 800m AIRLINE EXPRESS shifted in and made contact with MR CHEWY.

PROCEED TO WARN (G McCarthy) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn.

Stewards questioned Jockey G McCarthy in regards to his riding of PROCEED TO WARN from a point leaving the 500m. Jockey McCarthy stated that upon straightening he had been held up behind MR CHEWY and leaving the 350m had attempted a run to the inside of that horse but was unsuccessful in doing so. Jockey McCarthy stated that this resulted in him being further held up for clear running. Trainer B Bowditch explained that he had instructed Jockey McCarthy to position the horse back in the field and to improve his position upon entering the straight and thereafter. Their explanations were noted.

ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
