From Gold Coast Turf Club Meeting 26/09/2009
Race 7
Stewards concluded an inquiry into the tactics adopted on FORBES which was ridden in the lead in contrast to its normal racing pattern. K. Forrester advised that he had not been provided with any particular instructions except that the horse had not been performing well when ridden back in the field and after riding forward in the early stages he elected to clear the runners to his inside and obtain the lead. Trainer J. Wallace confirmed that K. Forrester had not received any specific instructions although in his view FORBES is best suited when ridden with cover. Stewards reminded K. Forrester of his obligations to advise stewards of any significant change in racing patterns. J. Wallace was advised that he should provide clear instructions to riders in the future.
Race 1: L&M + F& P Maiden Plate – 1800 metres:
1st – Warspite 2nd - Harazi 3rd - My Secret Act 4th - Johanne’s Diamond
Correct weight was delayed to allow App E. Kehoe the rider of second placegetter HARAZI to view the stewards’ footage of the home straight. After viewing the film App E. Kehoe did not wish to proceed with an objection and correct weight was declared.
CAPRICORN ROSE (A. Spinks)jumped away awkwardly and shifted out taking MY SECRET ACT (App. J. Wood) out onto FAST SPIN (G. Baker), which was taken out and made heavy contact with INDEED I AM (A. Mundy). Shortly after this incident INDEED I AM shifted out away from FAST SPIN and forced MORANT’S VISION across the heels of DEVIL’S WINE (D. Peisley).
Near the 1000m CAPRICORN ROSE had to be steadied when tightened for room by FAST SPIN, which was inclined to shift in and away from WARSPITE (App. M. Wood), which also shifted in when not fully clear. App. M. Wood was reprimanded and advised to exercise greater care when shifting ground in future.
Approaching and rounding the home turn FAST SPIN was held up and had to be steadied off the heels of MORANT’S VISION (K. Forrester), which had commenced to weaken.
HARAZI (App E. Kehoe) was held up when unable to obtain clear running in the early stages.
JOHANNE’S DIAMOND (L. Cheshire) hung in in the home straight resulting in its rider L. Cheshire being unable to test the gelding in her normal manner.
DIVE BOMBER (T. Pannell) raced wide for the majority of the event.
A. Mundy the rider of INDEED I AM, which performed below expectations, explained that although she settled further back in the field than anticipated INDEED I AM failed to respond to her riding after passing the 600m and in her view was disappointing in the home straight. A post race veterinary examination of INDEED I AM failed to reveal any abnormalities.
K. Forrester was questioned regarding his riding tactics on MORANT’S VISION today, which was ridden in a forward position, which is in contrast to its recent start where it had been ridden towards the rear. K. Forrester explained that he had received no specific instructions however, as MORANT’S VISION was racing in blinkers for the first time, when the pace was slow in the early stages and he was caught wide on MORANT’S VISION he elected to ride forward to obtain a position closer to the rail.
App M. Wood the rider of WARSPITE was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR 137(a) in that near the 100m he allowed his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of MY SECRET ACT (App J. Wood), resulting in MY SECRET ACT having to be steadied. App M. Wood’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 meetings to commence midnight 8 October 2009 and to expire midnight 21 October 2009.
Race 2: Keith McLean Life Member QTIS 3YO Maiden H’Cap – 1300 metres:

POISED FOR SUCCESS (K. Pope) and LIFEBELT raced greenly in the early and middle stages.
When placed under pressure rounding the home turn and in the home straight POISED FOR SUCCESS hung in and over the concluding stages threw its head in the air when corrected by its rider K. Pope.
BEEN NAUGHTY (A. Mundy) was inclined to lay out under pressure over the final 300m allowing LUNAR ROSE to obtain a run to that colt’s inside.
G. Baker was questioned regarding the riding tactics he adopted on LIFEBELT today, particularly over the final 500m. G. Baker explained that it was his intention to shift wider on the track entering the home straight however, he was unable to so as POISED FOR SUCCESS shifted out abruptly forward of him. G. Baker added that following this he elected to stay to the inside and he was unable to obtain a clear run for the entire home straight. A post race veterinary examination of LIFEBELT failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 3: L&M Panasonic Maiden H’Cap – 1400 metres:
1st – Taormina 2nd - Amery 3rd – Tic Toc Tiger 4th – Star Eclipse

Stewards questioned App A. Badger regarding the riding tactics adopted on TORA SAN, particularly in the middle stages where TORA SAN was a significant last and losing ground on the main body of the field. App Badger explained that TORA SAN never travelled well today and on entering the back straight continued to lose ground despite her efforts to urge the horse forward. App Badger added that TORA SAN moved wider on the track to improve near the 700m however, failed to finish the race off and was disappointing. Trainer N. Doyle advised he was satisfied with the riding of TORA SAN and explained that the gelding did not appreciate today’s firm track conditions and would now be sent for an immediate spell. A post race veterinary examination of TORA SAN revealed the gelding to be lame in the off fore leg. Trainer N. Doyle was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced before TORA SAN again races.

LIVE AND LOUD was then unable to be reloaded and was subsequently withdrawn at 3:49pm by order of stewards. No deductions were applicable however; all monies invested on LIVE AND LOUD were ordered to be refunded in full. Trainer L. McPherson was advised that LIVE AND LOUD must obtain 2 barrier certificates before being permitted to race again.
KAMADIVA (K. Pope) overraced in the early and middle stages of the event.
LEMARAC LASS (G. Baker) failed to obtain clear running in the home straight and went to the line not fully tested by its rider.
T. Treichel the rider of THEN HE KISSED ME, which weakened badly in the home straight, explained that the mare travelled well until placed under pressure after passing the 400m and then did not feel comfortable in its action. A post race veterinary examination of THEN HE KISSED ME revealed the mare had pulled up lame in the near fore leg. Trainer L. Birchley was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced before THEN HE KISSED ME again races.
Approaching the 200m LASS EE (App K. Ashton) had to be checked severely to avoid the heels of THEN HE KISSED ME, which was compounding at that stage. A short distance later ABOUT EVE (L. CHEVAL ARGENTE (App M. Wood) jumped awkwardly and shifted out making contact with EL KHARTUM (A. Mundy).
App J. Wood the rider of BENNIKE was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR 137(a) in that he permitted his mount to shift in near the 900m when not clear of CHEVAL ARGENTE (App M. Wood) resulting in that horse having to be checked. App J. Wood’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 9 meetings to commence midnight 8 October 2009 and expire midnight 22 October 2009.

Stewards will interview App A. Butler (ELASTANE) and D. Peisley (MR NICHOLAS) with regard to their actions over the final 150m.
When questioned as to the seemingly disappointing performance of ELASTANE. App A. Butler stated that despite travelling well in the early and middle stages the gelding failed to respond in the straight. App Butler further stated that, in his opinion, the long midweek trip from Mackay may have left the gelding somewhat flat for today’s event.
