DANCE REQUEST (D Tanti) and TIC TOC TIGER (C Small) came together at the start.
Near the 900m DUNBALLOGUE (App. E Kehoe) clipped the heels of DANCE REQUEST and faltered, shifting inwards. As a result COUSINE ISLAND (D Peisley) became unbalanced, made contact with the running rail and THE SNICSTER (C Whiteley) which was following had to be checked. App. Kehoe the rider of DUNBALLOGUE was instructed to exercise more care in similar situations.
Jockey C Whitely was questioned as to his riding of THE SNICSTER in the straight. Jockey Whiteley stated that after initially testing the gelding on straightening it was unable to take advantage of a run between DANCE REQUEST and AMERY (T Treichel) and close to the line he had to steady THE SNICSTER from the heels of AMERY.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of LUCKILY, Jockey D Tanti stated that his mount was under pressure at the 600m and was hard ridden, and in his opinion felt that LUCKILY may be better suited when stepped up in distance. Trainer’s representative, Mr S Hammersley, agreed that the run was disappointing and felt that the filly may not have appreciated being bustled in the early stages to hold a forward position. Mr Hammersley however advised that he had discussed the filly’s run with Trainer B Guy and Mr Guy advised that he would notify Stewards if anything came to light in the days following the race which may have had any bearing on LUCKILY’s performance today. A post-race veterinary examination of LUCKILY failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Trainer T McCarthy stated that the filly had trialled well in preparation for today’s race however the surface on that occasion was rain affected and he agreed with Jockey Baker’s assessment that the filly may have jarred up on the firm surface today. A post-race veterinary examination of LA CEVENNE found the filly to be showing signs of soreness and was short in its action. Trainer T McCarthy was advised that he would be required to obtain a veterinary certificate of fitness for LA CEVENNE before the filly races again.

RAINING FIRE reared as the start was effected and then attempted to buck losing valuable ground. Stewards questioned Jockey D Griffin as to his riding of RAINING FIRE, particularly after the filly had lost valuable ground in the early stages. Jockey Griffin stated that after missing the start RAINING FIRE then became unbalanced and attempted to buck and as a result of the filly’s waywardness, he then rode RAINING FIRE hard in an effort to have it travelling tractably, however the filly over-raced rounding the first turn and as it refused to settle, he allowed it to progress forward wide on the track. Jockey D Griffin added that RAINING FIRE was then under pressure on straightening and compounded in the straight. The connections were advised that due to the unsatisfactory performance of RAINING FIRE today, the horse will be required to pass an official barrier trial before racing again.

Trainer B Thornton informed Stewards following the race that PRIDE OF POLAND had come to the end of its preparation and would now be spelled.
When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of CORAL FLIGHT, Jockey T Pannell stated that the gelding travelled only fairly in the early stages and did not respond to his riding when asked for an effort and as a consequence did not finish the race off today.
