Race 1: Assured Managed Fund QTIS 2YO Maiden SW Plate – 1200m
1st – Amajill 2nd – Mistress Monica 3rd – Miss Bella Rosa 4th – Star Hero

G. Cooksley was fined the sum of $100.00 when dually engaged to ride both ALFIE JUNIOR and HAVEN ANGEL. K. Yoshida subsequently replaced G. Cooksley as the rider of ALFIE JUNIOR.

AMAJILL (App S. Fawke) and MISTRESS MONICA (L. Rolls) were both slow to begin.
ALFIE JUNIOR began awkwardly, shifted out and inconvenienced KING OF THE CASTLE (App P. Schmidt).

Near the 1100m FREDRIKSEN (App N. Masuda) had to be steadied when tightened for room between HOT TEMPO (A. Best) and STAR HERO (B. El-Issa), which shifted in. Jockey El-Issa was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

Near the 900m MORE LIES (App C. Schmidt) had to be steadied when awkwardly placed at the heels of HOT TEMPO.

ALFIE JUNIOR hung out during the middle stages of the race.

Upon straightening STAR HERO shifted in under pressure and bumped HOT TEMPO.

KING OF THE CASTLE and HAVEN ANGEL (G. Cooksley) both raced wide throughout the event.

Stewards questioned G. Cooksley as to his riding of HAVEN ANGEL. Of particular concern was the apparent lack of vigour shown by jockey Cooksley rounding the home turn and in the straight. Jockey Cooksley stated that he was instructed to obtain a midfield position with cover if possible. Jockey Cooksley noted that the filly began well and near the 900m was hampered by KING OF THE CASTLE and as such was obliged to race 3 wide with cover for the majority of the event. Jockey Cooksley added that he attempted to improve his position leaving the 500m however HAVEN ANGEL was inclined to shift ground and in his opinion was not comfortable on today’s firm surface. Jockey Cooksley further added that for this reason he was reluctant to apply the whip and as such rode HAVEN ANGEL out hands and heels in the straight. Jockey Cooksley noted that HAVEN ANGEL again shifted in when under pressure passing the 200m. Trainer J. Walk confirmed the instructions and after viewing the patrol footage agreed with the comments of Jockey Cooksley. Mr Walk was of the view that the fact that HAVEN ANGEL was obliged to race wide had a detrimental affect on its performance today. Stewards noted the explanation of jockey Cooksley. A post race veterinary examination of HAVEN ANGEL failed to reveal any significant abnormality. Mr Walk undertook to advise stewards should any abnormality come to light in the days subsequent to the event.

When questioned as to the overall performance of HOT TEMPO jockey A. Best stated that he was instructed to obtain a position with cover if possible. Jockey Best added that in the early stages he was obliged to press forward to obtain a position closer to the fence, which resulted in him leading today. Nonetheless jockey Best was disappointed with the performance of HOT TEMPO and added that the filly made an abnormal respiratory noise following the race. Trainer K. Clark-Peoples advised that HOT TEMPO performs best when able to obtain a position with cover. Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 2: Assured Management Fund QTIS 2YO Maiden SW Plate – 1200m
1st – Sleep Tight 2nd – Italian Storm 3rd – Lost Thief 4th – Butcher Blue

Trainer K. Stabe was fined the sum of $100.00 for failing to produce the identification papers for TAIJITU.

GRAPPA BRANDY (App S. Fawke) began awkwardly and lost ground.

ITALIAN STORM (B. El-Issa) and LOST THIEF (App C. Schmidt) bumped on jumping away.

TAIJITU (K. Yoshida) overraced during the early and middle stages and as a result raced wide for the majority of the event.

HIGHLAND CRUISING (L. Rolls) overraced during the early and middle stages of the event.

Leaving the 700m LOST THIEF shifted out to improve forcing TAIJITU wider. At a subsequent inquiry App C. Schmidt stated that LOST THIEF hung out when she attempted to steady the colt from the heels of HIGHLAND CRUISING. Stewards will interview trainer P. Duff as to the racing manners of LOST THIEF at a later date.

When questioned as to the tactics adopted on SLEEP TIGHT, which appeared in contrast to its last start where the filly led, trainer S. O’Dea stated that the instructions today were similar to that of its last start to be positive out of the barriers and obtain a handy position with cover. Mr O’Dea stated that at its last start SLEEP TIGHT was caught wide early and as a result the jockey on that occasion was obliged to press forward to the lead. Mr O’Dea added that today after beginning only fairly runners drawn to the inside of SLEEP TIGHT pressed forward in the early stages which resulted in App P. Schmidt electing to take hold to obtain a position with cover, which resulted in the filly racing further back in the field than anticipated. Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 3: Wayne Wilson Memorial Colts, Geldings & Entires Maiden SW Plate – 1400m
1st – Unbowed 2nd – Seeking Louie 3rd – Shenval 4th – Suncansing

UNBOWED (G. Cooksley) had to be steadied shortly after the start when buffeted between SUNCANSING (App P. Schmidt) and MOON PALACE (L. Rolls), which began awkwardly and shifted out. SUNCANSING became unbalanced for a short distance as a consequence.

THE FENCER (D. Carrigg) raced wide in the early stages of the event.

UNBOWED was held up for a short distance approaching the 400m.

SEEKING LOUIE (App C. Schmidt) shifted out under pressure in the home straight.

When questioned as to the tactics adopted on TORPEDO in the early stages particularly why SHENVAL (B. El-Issa) was able to improve to its inside. App M. McGuren stated that he was content to remain in a position one off the fence as TORPEDO was having its first start today. Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 4: Carbine Club International Congress Raceday Fillies & Mares Maiden SW Plate – 1400m
1st – Blu Axis 2nd – Empress Eugenie 3rd – Graceful Rose 4th – Crackingthenut

EMPRESS EUGENIE (L. Rolls) and FACET OF FLIGHT (App S. Fawke) were both slow to begin.

When questioned as to the tactics adopted on CAJUN CAT which led today in contrast to its normal pattern of racing, jockey G. Cooksley stated that he was instructed to ride the filly aggressively out of the barriers on the basis that it had been slow to muster speed in its previous runs. Jockey Cooksley added that due to the slow tempo in the early stages he found himself in the lead. Trainer T. Crane confirmed these instructions and stated that he had issued similar instructions at its most recent starts. Mr Crane added that in light of the filly’s performance today he would review its current racing pattern.

Jockey A. Best reported that it was not his intention to lead today however due to the slow tempo in the early stages he found himself in the lead without applying any undue pressure to MAKA’S BLU GIRL.

Following the running of this event G. Cooksley was stood down by the Club’s Doctor and replaced as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

The start was delayed to hold for an interstate event.

EVOCATIVE (J. Morris) which was fractious in the barriers began awkwardly.

A short distance later SOPHIA’S SON (L. Rolls) shifted out inconveniencing EVOCATIVE.

SOPHIA’S SON overraced in the early stages of the event.

When questioned as to the tactics adopted on RAINBOW MAGIC jockey J. Kokotajlo stated he was instructed to ride the gelding in the second half of the field. Jockey Kokotajlo added that the gelding began well and as such he was obliged to restrain it so as to comply with his instructions. Jockey Kokotajlo added that at this point RAINBOW MAGIC commenced to race with its head in the air and lost more ground than anticipated. When questioned as to his riding of RAINBOW MAGIC rounding the home turn jockey Kokotajlo stated that leaving the 500m he was obliged to steady the gelding when placed in restricted room to the inside of HEEZA BONZA (L. Cheshire). Jockey Kokotajlo added that RAINBOW MAGIC only possesses a short sprint and as a result he was reluctant to place it under pressure until a point leaving the 350m. His explanation was noted.

When questioned as to the performance of SOPHIA’S SON jockey Rolls stated that after overracing in the early stages the gelding settled and travelled well in the middle stages however failed to respond to his riding in the home straight and in his opinion proved disappointing today.
