At approximately the 400 metres, SEETHROUGH was steadied when placed in restricted room to the inside of MIDNIGHT SURRENDER (T. Bannon)
DANE RHYTHM (C. Kearney) raced wide throughout the race.
A post-race veterinary examination of TALLOWOOD did not reveal any apparent abnormalities.
Race 2 Dermotique QTIS Maiden Plate: - 1000 metres
1st - GOLD ADVANCE 2nd – MAY 3rd - I’M COOL TOO 4th – OPTIONAL ROCKET
Trainer P. Brennan was fined $50 for the late declaration of rider for TALISMANS LUCK. (LR 67)
The start of this race was delayed approximately 15 minutes when GYPSY STAR reared over in the enclosure and Jockey D. Philpot required medical attention for a possible injury to her left leg. Jockey Philpot was taken to the Gladstone hospital for further examination.
Whilst behind the barriers, DANDAR SAVANNAH (M. Cant) dislodged the rider and, prior to being recaptured, sustained an injury to its near side eye which required treatment post-race. Blood was also observed in the near-side nostril, which the Vet deemed as a result of trauma.
Stewards declared both runners late scratchings at 2.10pm. Prior to the announcement of correct weight all monies invested on GYPSY STAR and DANDAR SAVANNAH were ordered to be refunded and all winning bets were ordered to be paid less 21 cents in the dollar for a win and 20 cents for a place on the face value of the ticket.
CALLIOPE KING (M. Barnham) was slow to begin.
TALISMANS LUCK (A. Coome) jumped awkwardly in.
From approximately the 600 metres, MONASHEE EXPRESS (I. Coombes) hung out and, on the home turn, rolled out which caused I’M COOL TOO (App C Pye) and TALISMANS LUCK (A. Coome) to be taken wide.
At approximately the 200 metres, TALISMANS LUCK ducked out, which required the rider to stop and straighten.
Stewards questioned M. Barnham regarding the uncompetitive performance of CALLIOPE KING. After consideration was given that the start was delayed and it was the gelding’s first race start, no action was taken.
Race 3: Watson Piping Class 4 Handicap - 1194 metres
1st – RED TSAR 2nd – SOUNDSLIKEJAZZ 3rd – DON’T YOU WORRY 4th – HOT FLUSHES
SOUNDSLIKEJAZZ was presented without Blinkers that were declared as part of its approved gear. Stewards will make further inquires with Trainers Service Centre regarding this gear change.
At the start, HEART IN TENNESSEE (N. Patchett) and SIR SOMETHING (I. Coombes) made contact.
Jockey N. Patchett reported HEART IN TENNESSEE resented racing on the sand surface.
SOUNDSLIKEJAZZ (M. Barnham) and RED TSAR (App F Freihaut) raced wide throughout.
On the home turn, SNARED (App. C Pye) rolled in slightly and tightened DON’T YOU WORRY (A. Coome) in onto PYPER’S IMAGE (T. Bannon).
Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey A. Coome into the performance and riding tactics of DON’T YOU WORRY. Jockey Coome stated he had been instructed to have the gelding in a handy position, and after beginning well, near the 900 metres, he elected to restrain and take cover rather than race in a four-wide position. Jockey Coome further stated the gelding travelled well throughout, although was obliged to restrain in the middle stage when unable to improve its position behind the leaders and was unable to accelerate to take advantage of an available run in the early part of the straight and was further held up near the 100 metres. Both Jockey Coome and Trainer B Hammond were satisfied with the performance. Stewards noted the explanations.
Race 4: Walz Open Handicap - 1194 metres
1st – HIGH DEE 2nd – SNAGAPOT 3rd – TANZILL 4th – FRENARDI
SNAGAPOT (App A Kitson) and TANZILL (A. Coome) raced wide throughout the race.
Apprentice Kitson reported the gelding was inclined to lay in over the concluding stages.
Race 5: Lily Hair Class B Handicap - 1517 metres
1st - BLUMBERG 2nd - MARICOPA 3rd – JAMDIT 4th – FAST SPIN
SHOMBRAY (A. Coome) was difficult to load. On jumping away, the mare blundered severely which caused Jockey Coome to be unbalanced, and for a short distance after the start he lost the use his near side stirrup iron. SHOMBRAY raced extremely wide on the track throughout the race.
LASTOVO (C. Kearney) stood flat-footed and as a result was slow to begin.
Near the 1200 metres, FAST SPIN (App C Pye) was steadied when SHEZIGURU (M. Barnham) shifted ground.
A post-race veterinary inspection of SHEZIGURU did not reveal any apparent abnormalities. M. Barnham reported he would consult with the connections with the intention to retire the filly.
ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
