Race 1: Harvey World Travel Maiden Plate 850m
1st – Alriodane 2nd- Falfario 3rd- Charlie’s Choice 4th- Idle Minds
Due to a printing error, Apprentice J. Kropp was shown as the rider of GEMS TATT, when the declared rider was Apprentice D. McWhinney.
Stewards accepted the explanation of trainer Mr D. Gafa regarding the late declaration of a rider for WELTERDELTA.
Apprentice S. Arnold who was dislodged from SACRED SAND in the preliminary, was cleared by Paramedics to take his ride. SACRED SAND who galloped a short distance prior to being recaptured, underwent a veterinary examination at the barriers and was cleared to start.
MOONSHINE BOB (App. K. James) and TILL IT HAPPENS (App. S. Wiseman) who both broke through the front of the barriers, were quickly restrained by their riders, and cleared to race.
SACRED SAND was declared a late scratching at 1.27pm on advice of the starter when the horse became fractious in the barriers. Subsequent to the event, it was ordered that all monies invested on SACRED SAND be refunded, with deductions of 12 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets and 11 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets. Trainer Mr B. Gill was advised that SACRED SAND must compete in an official barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to its next race start.
WELTERDELTA (L. Henry) began awkwardly and lost ground.
ALRIODANE (I. Coombes) and CUDDLE DUCK (App. K. Gates) both raced wide the majority of the event.
A warning was issued to the connections of CHARLIE’S CHOICE (K. Sawyers) regarding the geldings pre-race behaviour in the saddling enclosure and behind the barriers.
Race 2: Wealth Directions Maiden Plate1470m
1st – Ascend 2nd – Carry The Rav 3rd – Halo Barbados 4th – Madame Szabo
VICTORY JACK (I. Coombes) broke through the front of the barriers, was quickly restrained and cleared to race.
MISS CALIFORNIA (K. Sawyers) was declared a late scratching at 2.07pm on veterinary advice after the mare’s head struck the barriers after becoming fractious. Subsequent to the event, it was ordered that all monies invested on MISS CALIFORNIA be refunded, with deductions 35 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets and 30 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets. Trainer Mr R. Bloomfield and Jockey K. Sawyers were questioned regarding the mare’s behaviour at the barrier. It was determined that the mare only became fractious after VICTORY JACK broke through the front of the barriers, and that the rear gate on the barrier then opened and the mare tried to back out of the barriers. In doing this, the mare was tightened around the flanks, reared and hit her head. Taking this into account, Stewards took no action regarding the mare’s barrier manners, however, advised Mr R. Bloomfield that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced prior to its next race start.
VICTORY JACK shifted out on jumping away and brushed ISABELLA’S IMPULSE (App. K. Yoneyama).
VICTORY JACK had to steadied off the heels of HALO BARBADOS (App. D McWhinney) leaving the straight on the first occasion.
ISABELLA’S IMPULSE raced wide in the early and middles stages of the event.
The rider of HALO BARBADOS dropped his whip near the 350m.
Race 3: Channon & Lawrence Dental Class 3 Plate 1470m
1st – Craiglea Tina 2nd- Tic Toc Tiger 3rd- Quite Stylish 4th- Arabia
QUITE STYLISH (App. S. Arnold) was slow to begin.
SIMPLE STUFF (App. K. Gates) began awkwardly.
CRAIGLEA TINA (App. K James) after beginning awkwardly, was further tightened between QUITE STYLISH and ARABIA (M. Hughes), both of which shifted ground.
ARABIA raced wide for the majority of the event.
WAYNE’S CHOICE (App. S. Wiseman) had to be steadied off the heels of the tiring SIMPLE STUFF near the 200m.
The rider of QUITE STYLISH, Apprentice S. Arnold reported the gelding was reluctant to stretch out in the early stages of the event, which resulted in him being further back than anticipated. He further advised that the gelding improved into the race from the 400m and finished off the race well.
Race 4: Jeffery, Cuddihy & Joyce Solicitors Class B Handicap 1170m
1st – Challoman 2nd- Noah’s Smile 3rd- Bella Montana 4th- Al Frisco
BELLA MONTANA (L. Appo) who became fractious in the barriers, underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to start.
GENERAL LAUREATE (App. S. Wiseman) and AL FRISCO (App. C. Priest) were both slow to begin.
BELLA MONTANA, which began awkwardly, raced wide for the majority of the event.
CRAIGLEA EDGE (App. K. James) improved onto the heels of GLENROCK MATTHEW (K. Sawyers) near the 300m and had to be steadied.
Stewards questioned Jockey L. Appo regarding his riding of BELLA MONTANA over the concluding stages of the event. L. Appo explained that the mare had peaked on her run near the 20m and only rode the horse hands and heels from this point. Stewards noted L. Appo’s comments, and whilst of the opinion that this had not affected the finishing position of the mare, advised L. Appo that they would expect him to ride with more vigour to the finish line in the future so as not to leave himself open to question.
