BURDEKIN RACE CLUB INC STEWARDS REPORT SATURDAY 15/05/04.STEWARDS PANEL: R.C.SMITH (Chairman), W.C.BIRD.
WEATHER - FINE, - TRACK, - (Turf), - Good- RAIL –TRUE
Late Scratching – Race 3, Horse No.9. Rough Landing was withdrawn at 8.40am (even date), owing to there being no jockey available.
RACE 1 MAIDEN PLATE, 1460 Metres. 6 Starters.
Bybrocco (P.CULLEN), jumped the crossing near the 1300 Metres.
RACE 2: CLASS 4 HANDICAP, 1180 Metres. 5 Starters.
Near the 500 Metres Rocky Springs (A.COX), was held up for a run when Circle of White (Apprentice L.ATTARD) who was sharing the lead with Darth Vader (F.EDWARDS) moved away from the running rail. At that point The Spur (P.CULLEN), which had been travelling behind Rocky Springs, gained a run along the running rail from behind Rocky Springs and Jockey COX was then positioned on the heels of the leaders and unable to switch to either the inside or outside as Rameka (A.MOLINO) was positioned on his outside at the time. The incident cost Rocky Springs some ground.
RACE 3: QTIS CLASS 2 HANDICAP. 1180 Metres. 8 Starters.
Babe of the Year blundered immediately after the start and lost ground. Stewards inquired into an incident, which occurred near the 200 Metres. After taking evidence from Apprentice L.ATTARD (Express Force), D.ANDREWS (Hello Belle), A MOLINO (Jagdem) and W.KENNING (Painted Up), Jockey W.KENNING was charged with Careless Riding ARR 137(a). The careless riding being that near the 200 Metres he permitted his horse to shift inwards when not clear of Jagdem and Hello Belle resulting in both of those horses having to be checked and lose ground. Jockey KENNING was found Guilty of the charge and his license to ride in races was suspended for a period of three North Queensland Meetings being from midnight on 20th May, 2004 and to expire at midnight on 23rd May, 2004.
At about the same time of the above incident Express Force (L.ATTARD) shifted out when struck with the whip crowding Hello Belle (D.ANDREWS), but Apprentice ATTARD immediately stopped riding his mount and straightened it. Jockey ANDREWS was adamant that ATTARD’S horse was not the cause of her having to check her horse and lose the ground. Stewards were also of the opinion that ATTARD’S mount shifting outwards was not the cause of ANDREWS and MOLINO having to check their horses.
RACE 4: CLASS B HANDICAP. 900 Metres. 7 Starters.
Final Suite (W.BINDER) jumped on terms with the remainder of the field but was slowly into stride.
RACE 5: HANDICAP. 1000 Metres.
Keppel Lair (W.KENNING), suffered a bleeding attack in running, bleeding from both nostrils, which was verified by Club Veterinary Surgeon (Dr. D.VIERO), Veterinary Incident Report No. 4941 refers and has been stood down from racing for the mandatory period of 3 months (AR.53.A.[4]). Dr.M.PRESTON the owner/trainer of Keppel Lair indicated the gelding would be retired from racing. Keppel Lair was sent to be swabbed. Document of Description for Keppel Lair suitably endorsed. ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED, AS WAS KEPPEL LAIR. GENERAL.
