Race 1: Joe’s Cartons Class 2 Handicap – 900 metres:
1st – My Fallacy 2nd – Wingen Lass 3rd – Pronounce 4th – Ruleire

PERSIAN ARROW (I. Toward) was slow to begin.

WINGEN LASS (P. Cullen) began awkwardly and shifted out taking STARTUS (K. Rockett) out onto GOLD SOVEREIGN (G. Kliese) which lost ground.

Near the 600m MORE LIPS (M. Atkinson) improved onto heels and had to be steadied.

WINGEN LASS hung out rounding the home turn and then shifted in under pressure over the concluding stages.

GOLD SOVEREIGN was held up rounding the home turn and again over concluding stages.

Jockey I. Toward, the rider of PERSIAN ARROW, dropped his whip near 200m

LUXOR DAYS (K. Stone) and WHAT SAY YOU (J. Murphy) raced wide throughout

LUXOR DAYS (K. Stone) suffered a bleeding attack for the first time. Trainer R. Schluenz was advised that LUXOR DAYS would be barred from racing for a period of three (3) months and must perform to the stewards satisfaction in a 1000m gallop under the provisions of AR 53A before the mare would be permitted to race again.

Race 2: Lindsay Australia Ltd QTIS Maiden Plate – 1100 metres:
1st – Clancy’s Mountain 2nd – Monsoon Mist 3rd – Crestar 4th – Furious Lee

Jockey F. Edwards was dual engaged on MANHATTEN SKYLINE and BIG SPRING. However, when BIG SPRING gained a run Jockey Edwards was obliged to ride BIG SPRING as he had accepted that engagement first. As a consequence both MANHATTEN SKYLINE and GIRLS LIKE PURPLE were declared late scratchings due to no riders being available.

Jockey K. Stone was declared as the rider of CHRISTMAS VAMPIRE, after COCOA CONATUS was scratched.

BIG SPRING (F. Edwards) was fractious in the barriers and as a consequence was slow to begin. Trainer F. Wieland was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding’s barrier manners.

FURIOUS LEE (S. Morris), PRIVE (J. Stopps) and CHRISTMAS VAMPIRE (K. Stone) were all slow to begin.

CRESTAR (K. Rockett) began awkwardly.

ELAINE’S REWARD (J. Long) and CLOUDLAND (J. Murphy) bumped at the start.

CLOUDLAND, ELAIN’S REWARD and CHRISTMAS VAMPIRE all raced wide throughout.

HEDONIST (I. Toward) had a tendency to lay out for a short distance near the 800m.

Near the 600m BIG SPRING shifted out in order to improve its position to the outside of CLOUDLAND, when CLOUDLAND shifted out abruptly severely hampering BIG SPRING and ELAINE’S REWARD which was following. Jockey Murphy, the rider of CLOUDLAND, stated that the gelding, which was having its first start today, raced greenly throughout the event and when it received a slight bump near the 600m shifted out abruptly despite her efforts. Trainer R. Duce was advised that CLOUDLAND would to have to trial to the steward’s satisfaction before it would be permitted to race again.

Jockey I. Toward was questioned as to his riding of HEDONIST over the concluding stages. Jockey Toward stated that he had placed the mount under pressure rounding the home turn and that he had tested HEDONIST with both the whip and hands and heels riding for the majority of the straight. However, he was of the opinion that the gelding had reached the end of its run leaving the 100m and as such was reluctant to test the gelding any further. Stewards noted the explanation, however reminded Jockey Toward of his obligation under the rules of racing to ride his mounts out to the winning post.

MONSOON MIST (M. Atkinson) laid out under pressure leaving the 100m.

Race 3: Lamanna Group Class 6 Plate – 1100 metres:
1st – Chubby 2nd – Huss 3rd – Danzano 4th – Beurre

BEURRE (S. Kaya) raced wide in the early stages.

GENERAL MACARTHUR (G. Kliese) raced wide throughout.

GENERAL SPARK (K. Rockett) was held up for clear running when disappointed for a run between HUSS (F. Edwards) and BEURRE rounding the home turn.

BEURRE laid in under pressure in the straight and on two occasions had to be steadied to avoid the heels of DANZANO (P. Cullen).

A post race veterinary examination of GATHERING LIGHT (J. Stopps) revealed the mare to be suffering from a severe case of heat stress. Trainer J. Russell was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced before the mare will be permitted to race again.

Race 4: Starfruit Banana Plus Class B Handicap – 1200 metres:
1st – Nymphette 2nd – Great Heights 3rd – Galena 4th – Elonzo

BROOKTON SPECIAL was declared a late scratching as no rider was available.

SPECIAL WOMAN (J. Long) and NYMPHETTE (P. Cullen) were both slow to begin.

PRIVATE JAMES (J. Stopps) and GREAT HEIGHTS (F. Edwards) bumped on jumping and lost ground.

WHATAWOW (J. Murphy) began awkwardly.

BETHEL TWO (K. Rockett), CAPE HULA HULA (M. Atkinson) and PRIVATE JAMES all raced wide throughout.

NYMPHETTE was held up for clear running rounding the home turn.

When racing in restricted room to the inside of MAKEM DAZZLE (I. Toward) near the 400m, SUPER ZERO (G. Kliese) bumped the hindquarters of NYMPHETTE (P. Cullen) which turned NYMPHETTE outwards resulting in SUPER ZERO having to be eased for a short distance. Jockey Kliese stated that after receiving this slight interference SUPER ZERO was reluctant to take any further part in the event and added that the gelding would be better suited racing in a more forward position, a position which it was unable to take up today because of the early speed in the event.

When questioned as to the disappointing performance of MAKEM DAZZLE, Jockey I. Toward stated that the gelding knuckled shortly after the start and despite travelling well in the middle stages failed to respond to his riding in the straight and in his opinion was disappointing. Trainer O. Cairns reported that MAKEM DAZZLE had pulled up well following the event and that the only reason she could offer to explain the disappointing performance was that MAKEM DAZZLE didn’t handle the Innisfail track as it had performed poorly at its last start on the track despite expectations of a good performance.

Race 5: JE Tipper Pty Ltd Class 4 Handicap – 1500 metres
1st – Heeza Ruler 2nd – Hamatym 3rd – Snappy Cat 4th – Bellla Me

OURQUESTRO (G. Kleise) was declared a late scratching on the advice of the veterinary surgeon when found to be suffering from a virus. The scratching was declared prior to the commencement of betting and as such no deductions were ordered. Trainer R. Schluenz was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required before OURQUESTRO would be permitted to race again.

HAMTYM (I. Toward) was slow to begin.

Race 6: Moraitis Bananas Open Handicap – 1800 metres
1st – Master Hugh 2nd – Destined to Reign 3rd – Our Private Jet 4th – Royal Valley

SEBASTIEN was declared a late scratching when no rider was available.

Jockey M. Atkinson was declared as the rider of OUR PRIVATE JET.

FABULOUS FUHRLONG was presented to race without blinkers and upon application by Trainer G. Whelow was permitted to race without blinkers. An announcement to this effect was made on course prior to the race. An inquiry into the reasons surrounding FABULOUS FUHRLONG being presented to race without its approved racing gear was adjourned.

OUR PRIVATE JET (M. Atkinson) began awkwardly.

BURGUNDY PRINCE (J. Long) and XAAR ON ABSINTH (K. Stone) were both slow to begin.

GREAT PORTENT (J. Murphy) and RAIN GAME (P. Cullen) both raced wide in the early stages and XAAR ON ABSINTH raced wide throughout.

XAARTRICK (K. Rockett) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and upon straightening attempted a run to the inside of OUR PRVIATE JET. However, XAARTRICK was disappointed for that run when OUR PRIVATE JET was forced to shift in to avoid the tiring GREAT PORTENT. XAARTIRICK was then held up for clear running behind OUR PRIVATE JET from the 200m to the 100m, at which point it was able to find clear running to the inside of OUR PRIVATE JET which shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages.

Jockey I. Toward reported that FABULOUS FUHRLONG got its tongue over the bit which in his opinion prevented the gelding from finishing off the race as expected.

When questioned as to the tactics adopted on XAAR ON ABSINTH, particularly the decision to allow the gelding to race wide throughout the event, Jockey K. Stone explained that had had been instructed to have XAAR ON ABSINTH racing in a midfield position and that after beginning slowly he allowed the gelding to shift wider near the 1200m to improve as per his instructions. Jockey Stone added that he was not concerned with having XAAR ON ABSINTH racing wide at this point as he was in the back straight and the gelding was not forced to cover extra ground. Jockey Stone further added that when rounding the turn near the 800m he attempted to place XAAR ON ABSINTH under pressure however got his reins caught in the gelding’s mane, on two occasions, forcing it to shift even wider on the track. Jockey Stone noted that XAAR ON ABSINTH failed to finish the race off as expected which, in hindsight, he attributed to the gelding racing wide throughout. Steward’s advised Jockey Stone of their belief that he had erred in allowing XAAR ON ABSINTH to race in such a wide position throughout the event. However, the stewards could not be satisfied that the standard of riding fell below the required standard for a breach of the Australian Rules of Racing.
