WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD RAIL - TRUE POSITION
RACE 1: HOMESTYLE BAKERY H'CAP - 1500M.
BROISEL BAY jumped away awkwardly.
Shortly after the start, NORTRAM was hampered when tightened for room between SAW A DEVIL and LE ROI SOLEIL, which was taken in by SONIC YOUTH.
After passing the 1400m., LE ROI SOLEIL and EUREKA STORM brushed, which resulted in EUREKA STORM becoming unbalanced. EUREKA STORM then shifted in, taking LE ROI SOLEIL in, resulting in that gelding having to be restrained off the heels of SAW A DEVIL. J. Byrne, rider of EUREKA STORM, was advised to exercise more care. NORTRAM, which was following, was hampered as a consequence. LE ROI SOLEIL then continued to race fiercely for some distance.
Approaching the 400m., TONDELAYO shifted in slightly, resulting in BROISEL BAY having to be steadied and in doing so shifted in and made contact with the hind quarters of LE ROI SOLEIL. LE ROI SOLEIL then became unbalanced and shifted in, making contact with the hind quarters of SAW A DEVIL, causing that horse to be checked. Whilst stewards conceded that LE ROI SOLEIL had exacerbated the incident by overreacting to the initial contact, S. Katsidis, rider of TONDELAYO, was nevertheless reprimanded and advised to exercise more care in future.
RACE 2: BOEING H'CAP - 1200M.
CANADIAN SUCCESS and NAUDERS were both slow to begin.
After travelling 50 metres, CLASS TOPPER had to be restrained off the heels of GUWAPO, which shifted out. FINAL GOLD, which was following, was hampered in this incident.
Near the 700m., FINAL GOLD was inclined to shift out and had to be checked off the heels of CLASS TOPPER.
GUWAPO hung out rounding the home turn, forcing RUBBLE wider on the track. GUWAPO continued to hang out under pressure and near the 250m. made contact with RUBBLE.
M. Paget, rider of the 3rd placegetter, GUWAPO, was reminded of his obligations to ride his mount right out to the finish line.
RACE 3: RACENET H'CAP - 1200M.
No incidents.
RACE 4: THE RACEBOOK COMPANY H'CAP - 2150M.
As G. Geran was to be overweight, S. Seamer was substituted as the rider of NOBLE KNAVE, and A.Gillett as the rider of ROVING MINSTREL (Race 9).
HIGH POWERED was slow to begin.
Near the 900m., SUPER QUOZ had to be steadied to avoid the heels of BODYGUARD, which shifted out.
At the 400m., WOBBYGONG and SUPER QUOZ were hampered when tightened for room between HIGH POWERED and PLACID REIGN, both of which shifted ground.
WOBBYGONG was inclined to hang in under pressure in the straight.
RACE 5: QBBS H'CAP - 1666M.
Approaching the 1400m., when being restrained, MAJESTIC HEIGHTS shifted out and made contact with EDGED IN BLACK, and then had to be steadied off the heels of HURRY SCURRY.
When questioned, M. Cahill stated that KITCHEN settled further back in the field than he had anticipated. He added that the filly travelled reasonably throughout the race, however when placed under pressure, KICTHEN had an inclination to hang in which prevented him from riding his mount out to the best of his ability.
RACE 6: GLENGARY STUD H'CAP - 1000M.
The start was delayed when CRAZY IN LOVE required farrier attention.
PURE MAREE reared as the gates opened and lost considerable ground.
Approaching the 800m., BITUIN MARKIT had to be steadied when tightened for room between MONASH LADY and FINAL EXIT, which shifted in momentarily.
When questioned, M. Paget explained that even though PURE MAREE had missed the start, he felt that after leaving the 800m., he had obtained a reasonable position in the field, however when he asked the filly for an effort after leaving the 600m., she failed to respond and was very disappointing. He added that after the event PURE MAREE had pulled up very quickly. A veterinary examination of PURE MAREE failed to reveal any abnormality.
RACE 7: YALUMBA H'CAP - 1000M.
TRENDY GUY was slow to begin.
Near the 450m., HUGE clipped the heels of GALACTIC ROMEO and blundered.
At the entrance to the straight, when attempting to improve to the outside of the heels of BLUE JET, ANTARES made contact with HUGE on 2 occasions, resulting in ANTARES being forced across the heels of BLUE JET, and then was unable to obtain clear running until near the 150m..
TRENDY GUY was held up for clear running over the concluding stages.
RACE 8: TRAVELAND H'CAP - 1100M.
GO JUAN GO was slow to begin.
LANCER'S TREAT jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, taking LIGHT FUSE out on to DENI, which in turn made contact with JODAVRO, which also jumped away awkwardly. JODAVRO was then buffeted for some distance between DENI and SEND A DIVA.
Near the 1000m., JODAVRO shifted out across the heels of SEND A DIVA.
Approaching the 800m., LANCER'S TREAT shifted in and made contact with ILUMBAH. LIGHT FUSE, which was racing behind those horses, shifted in abruptly, causing JODAVRO to be checked. Whilst stewards acknowledged that LIGHT FUSE had been a major factor in this incident by racing ungenerously, P. Spry was reprimanded and reminded of his obligations to be clear when shifting ground.
At the 400m., LIGHT FUSE had to be checked off the heels of the tiring ILUMBAH.
RACE 9: IPSWICH CITY SQUARE H'CAP - 1200M.
ROVING MINSTREL shifted in at the start and made contact with NARANGHI LASS.
A short distance later, EL CARGO shifted in, inconveniencing ROVING MINSTREL.
SPIRIT OF EQUUS raced ungenerously in the early stages.
Approaching the 800m., OUT BREAK shifted in and made heavy contact with VALLEY WARRIOR, causing that horse to become unbalanced.
Near the 500m., EL CARGO shifted out and away from the heels of GROUSE LANE, making contact with ST. PLATO, forcing that gelding wider on the track.
GROUSE LANE shifted out on the home turn, making contact with ROMAN NEWS.
Near the 100m., ROVING MINSTREL was hampered when tightened for room between NARANGHI LASS, which shifted out slightly, and SPIRIT OF EQUUS, which was inclined to hang in. D. Walsh, rider of SPIRIT OF EQUUS, immediately stopped riding and straightened his mount.
HARVEY LAD and KING SALIERI both had difficulty obtaining clear running in the straight.
GROUSE LANE, which also had difficulty obtaining clear running in the straight when racing between OUT BREAK and EL CARGO, shifted in near the 50m. and made contact with OUT BREAK.
A veterinary examination of VALLEY WARRIOR, which raced disappointingly, revealed the gelding to have pulled up distressed, and a swab sample was taken. When questioned, M. Paget could offer no explanation for the performance. He stated he had ridden the gelding work and that in his opinion VALLEY WARRIOR had improved in its condition since its last start win at Doomben on 1 May. Owner Mr G. T. Coady expressed concern in relation to the horse's distressed condition and advised stewards he would have VALLEY WARRIOR examined by his veterinary surgeon and would advise stewards of the results of same.
