IPSWICH TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT. 01.07.00

WEATHER – FINE TRACK - GOOD RAIL – IN TRUE POSITION


RACE 1: QUEENSLAND TIMES H'CAP - 1666M

Due to a flight delay, J Innes was unable to fulfil his engagement on LE PHANTOM and was replaced by M Aspinall.

Leaving the 100m J Byrne, the rider of the 3rd placegetter TOBOLSK, had has whip accidentally knocked from his grasp by D Beadman, the rider of the winner NED’S REVENGE.

SUPERSTEAM was inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight.

When questioned M Cahill was unable to offer any excuses for the disappointing performance of WE’RE DANCING. He advised that the horse settled comfortably just worse than mid field and travelled strongly throughout the middle stages of the race, however when placed under pressure the gelding was the first horse beaten and failed to run on as expected. Stable foreman Mr S Wilson advised that in light of today’s performance, it was likely that WE’RE DANCING would be sent for a spell. A veterinary examination of WE’RE DANCING failed to reveal any abnormality. A swab sample was taken from the horse.

RACE 2: GLENGARRY STUD H'CAP - 1350M

Trainer P Carey was fined $50 for failing to present KIRRANE on course by the prescribed time.

COUNTERSHOT jumped in at the start hampering CHARIOT’S RHYTHM.

MAY ROYAL had to be steadied off the heels of FAIR PAY when that horse assumed the lead at the 900m.

Inside the 100m KIRRANE shifted in off the heels of CELEBRITY and made contact with RED INTRO.

A veterinary examination of FAIR PAY, which weakened badly from the home turn, failed to reveal any abnormality.

RACE 3: JIM BEAM H'CAP - 1200M

LORD KARIOI jumped out at the start hampering HUGE and REGAL CLASS.

Passing the 800m KING CAL had to be restrained off the heels of HUGE. At the same stage NERVES OF STEEL also tended to get its head up when being steadied off BENIN.

NERVES OF STEEL again had to be steadied off BENIN on the home turn.

At the entrance to the straight MORINGA’S MANDRAKE shifted out and made contact with KING CAL.

Approaching the 200m JADED had to be checked off the heels of the tiring ROMANTIC BAY when taken in slightly by BENIN. Whilst it was established that BENIN may have been influenced by LORD KARIOI, M Paget, the rider of BENIN, was nonetheless reprimanded for failing to make a greater effort to keep his mount on a true course.

A veterinary examination of LUCKY LAURIE, which raced disappointingly, failed to reveal any abnormality. N Day advised that he was surprised when LUCKY LAURIE failed to show its customary speed and whilst the gelding did not obtain a clear passage in the straight, it nonetheless performed well below expectations.

RACE 4: QBBS BUNDAMBA PLATE SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1350M

The start was delayed when THE ALMIGHTY ONE required farrier attention.

CEFFYL jumped out at the start taking SPLENDENT MISSILE outwards, resulting in crowding to COSMIC COMET and GANGSTER.

At the 1000m SPLENDENT MISSILE had to be steadied off the heels of HOROWITZ which shifted in. M Paget, the rider of HOROWITZ, was reminded of his obligation to provide at least two lengths clearance when shifting ground.

When the pace slackened at the 900m CEFFYL had to be restrained off the heels of the leader HOROWITZ. MAKIN’ TRACKS, which was following, struck the heels of CEFFYL and blundered badly. I CAN’T BELIEVE IT, which was following, was also inconvenienced.

Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight, I CAN’T BELIEVE IT was held up for clear running.

When questioned S Seamer stated that YORUBA was reluctant to stretch out in the early stages to the extent that he was forced to pull the whip on the gelding. He described YORUBA's performance as that of a tired horse. Trainer R Heathcote advised that YORUBA would be sent for an immediate spell. A veterinary examination of YORUBA failed to reveal any abnormality.

RACE 5: TREASURY CASINO SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1350M

TERJULE and TURBULENT WIND were both slow to begin.

BLUE POET also jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

BEAMER had to be steadied off the heels of MALTESE POWER which shifted in near the 1100m.

Soon after entering the straight INDIAN CIGAR was inconvenienced by ROADWAY which shifted out to obtain clear running.



RACE 6: SCHWEPPES EYE LINER STAKES - 1200M

MR. CENTREFOLD jumped out abruptly at the start, making heavy contact with CALL ME SPIKE and in turn causing some inconvenience to DRAMA AMOUR.

MANNDO jumped away awkwardly.

NO INTENTION jumped in at the start inconveniencing ANTIQUITY. In this incident ANTIQUITY blundered. ANTIQUITY returned to scale with a twisted near fore plate. D Beadman, the rider of ANTIQUITY, advised that in his view this occurred at the start.

An inquiry was opened into the reason for RIVER AFFAIR falling on the home turn. SHIFTING, which was following, was unable to avoid the fallen RIVER AFFAIR which resulted in its rider J Innes being dislodged. Evidence was taken from M Cahill (RETURN TO GO), D Craven (LITTLE SHOES), S Seamer (THE KILDARE KID), L Cassidy (PITTANCE) and J Innes (SHIFTING). The inquiry was subsequently adjourned to allow stewards to obtain evidence from G Doughty, the rider of RIVER AFFAIR, who was transported to hospital as a consequence of injuries incurred in the fall.

A veterinary examination of CATAINER, which compounded badly, detected a respiratory noise. Trainer S Lee will be interviewed regarding CATAINER’s immediate future.

RACE 7: XXXX IPSWICH CUP - 2150M

As G Doughty was unable to fulfil his engagement following his fall in Race 6, M Aspinall was substituted as the rider of JACKS ARRIVAL.

After leaving the 1000m MUSHTAK broke down and fell, dislodging its rider J Sheehan. The following horses and riders were also brought down: SEA BREEZE (M Paget), REPUTED GROOM (M Privato), BLUDASH (J Stanley), ARCTIC VENTURE (J Taylor), AGGIE’S HEART ( D Beadman) and MUDEJAR (M Cahill). N Day was dislodged from his mount KING SALIERI. When MUSHTAK fell, that horse collided heavily with the hind quarters of OUR GEORGE. All other runners, with the exception of the leader I REIGN SUPREME, namely NARWONG, BRAVE PRINCE, THURSDAY’S CHILD, DIRECTOR’S SPECIAL, JACK’S ARRIVAL and CRUZEIRO, met with severe interference. Jockeys J Sheehan, M Privato, M Paget and D Beadman were transported to hospital for further assessment and treatment.

The Club's veterinary surgeon Dr K Squire reported that due to injuries sustained MUSHTAK, ARCTIC VENTURE and BLUDASH were all euthanised on humane grounds. He also reported that NARWONG sustained a laceration to the anterior off fore pastern and that MUDEJAR and AGGIE’S HEART had escaped apparent injury. REPUTED GROOM, SEA BREEZE and KING SALIERI were examined by Dr Bruce Young of the Racing Science Centre who advised that those horses had also escaped major injury.

RACE 8: BORAL H'CAP - 2150M

Trainer R Sutton was fined $50 for failing to present CHARGOLD on course by the prescribed time.

In light of the severe incident in Race 7 and given the number of riders who were indisposed with varying degrees of injury, it was decided to abandon this event.

ALL WINNERS AND WE’RE DANCING WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
