DENESTY, which haemorrhaged from both nostrils during the event, was barred from racing for a period of 3 months. A subsequent veterinary examination of DENESTY revealed the gelding to be suffering from a heart condition. Trainer M. Price will be advised that DENESTY will be further required to undergo an ECG and barrier trial prior to its next race start.
RACE 5: WARWICK R.S.L. H'CAP - 1200M.
EMBEZZLED was slow to jump.
Approaching the 1100m., PISANI BAY had to be steadied to avoid the heels of FLYING TAAN, which shifted in. A. Gould, rider of FLYING TAAN, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
ETRE ACCORDE was inclined to pull hard in the early and middle stages.
Rounding the home turn, PISANI BAY shifted in when not clear of DARK REEF, obliging that horse to be checked off the heels of OUR CHARIOT. J. Warrington, rider of PISANI BAY, was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care.
RACE 6: SALLY & TERESA H'CAP - 2150M.
PLACID REIGN refused to jump and lost considerable ground at the start.
Following the race, a veterinary examination was carried out on PLACID REIGN (R. Pitman) and the surgeon reported at the time of examination he found no abnormality. An inquiry was opened into the riding tactics of R. Pitman, in particular in the early and middle stages of the race where the horse trailed the field by many lengths at varying stages. R. Pitman explained that he was instructed to allow the horse to settle in the early stages and not bustle the horse. However, in hindsight he felt he allowed PLACID REIGN to relax and get too far out of its ground rather than show some aggression and have the horse racing closer and in touch with the field. After also considering submissions from trainer Mrs M. Brosnan and also Mr H. Williams, Master of R. Pitman, stewards informed R. Pitman they were concerned with his riding of PLACID REIGN and were of the opinion he should have shown more initiative in the early stages and have the horse racing in touch with the field. R. Pitman was severely reprimanded and advised that any repetition may lead to action being taken against his licence.
RACE 7: MEGAN HEINRICH H'CAP - 1500M.
An inquiry was held into the riding tactics of D. Griffin, rider of DINNER'S READY, in particular in the early and middle stages where the horse raced outside the leader as compared to its previous start where DINNER'S READY was allowed to settle midfield. D. Griffin explained that he had been instructed to endeavor to gain a position in the box seat, and rounding the first turn when caught 3 wide he elected to restrain his mount to obtain a position behind the leaders, however DINNER'S READY resented being restrained and he felt rather than fight the horse when unsuccessful in gaining that position he would allow it to stride forward when caught 3 wide. The explanation was noted.
RACE 8: GREG LINNETT H'CAP - 1350M.
S. Seamer, rider of GREAT WONDER, was severely reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in near the 1200m., resulting in KWILA SPIRIT being taken in on to LOGAN'S RUN.
A. Cowie, rider of COOLANGATTA, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 900m., when attempting to take up a position closer to the fence he was not sufficiently clear of CROMARTY FIRTH, resulting in that gelding clipping the heels of COOLANGATTA and blundering. JUBILAWAY, which was following, was also severely checked in this incident. A. Cowie was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire at midnight, 3 February, and to expire at midnight, 14 February 2001.
The club's veterinary surgeon reported that COOLANGATTA had sustained a small laceration to the outside of the near fore cannon.
ALL WINNERS, PLACID REIGN AND DENESTY WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
