AND YOU (R. McMahon), GAYLORD (S. Apthorpe) and PING FONG (W. Moore) all began awkwardly.
Approaching the 600m., TAX EVASION (S. Katsidis) began to overrace and had to be steadied off the heels of ALL SEQUALO (B. Thomson) and shifted out, taking DUSTY TAAN (C. Whiteley) wider on the track.

The saddle on ALL SEQUALO slipped back approaching the 600m., placing its rider, B. Thomson, at a disadvantage for the remainder of the event.
Stewards questioned trainer G. Heinrich and jockey S. Katsidis into the seemingly disappointing performance of TAX EVASION. S. Katsidis stated that the gelding travelled well until near the 600m., however from that point TAX EVASION commenced to overrace and then failed to respond to his riding once placed under pressure in the straight. Trainer G. Heinrich explained that the gelding had worked well during the week leading up to today's event, however was at a loss to explain the disappointing performance. Mrs Heinrich added that TAX EVASION would now be sent for a spell, and gave an undertaking to advise stewards of anything that may come to light with the gelding in the days following the event that may have had a bearing on today's performance. A veterinary examination of TAX EVASION failed to reveal any abnormality. A swab sample was taken from TAX EVASION.
The connections of AND YOU, which bled during the event, were advised that the gelding would now be barred from racing under AR53A for a period of 3 months.
