Stewards noted the explanation.

As S. Katsidis was indisposed due to personal circumstances, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Raceday Summary.

Ross further advised stewards that the horse had come to the end of its current campaign and it would be his intention to give the horse an immediate spell. A veterinary examination of the horse carried out by the Club’s veterinary surgeon found the horse to be sore in the near foreleg. As a result of this examination, connections of WHATATUNE were advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness will be required before the horse again races.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of CHANCE BAY, L. Morrison explained that the horse, in her opinion, failed to handle the track conditions today. Trainer H. Norman confirmed L. Morrison’s opinion and advised stewards that it would be the intention to give the horse a slight ease-up. A veterinary examination of CHANCE BAY found no abnormalities. Stewards noted the explanations given.

Stewards questioned both apprentice I. French and trainer G. Livermore in relation to the riding tactics adopted on NOOLINGA SERENADE, which established a significant lead before tiring over the final 450m. Apprentice French stated that whilst instructed to lead, he was unable to judge the tempo of the race. Trainer G. Livermore was of the opinion that the horse’s inability to handle the track conditions was a contributing factor to the reason NOOLINGA SERENADE compounded over the final 450m. After considering the matter, stewards gave apprentice French the benefit of the doubt and expressed concern regarding his lack of initiative shown in the middle stages and advised apprentice French that a repetition of this manner of riding could lead stewards to review the status of his riding licence.

As the pace eased approaching the 1400m WAITOMO (B. Calkin) had to be steadied off the heels of EASILY DONE (M. Cahill). KAADEEMA (D. Peisley), which was following and racing ungenerously, had to be steadied and shifted out, bumping SALE CITY (R. Plumb).
