Approaching the 500m, ACCELERATION (C. Spry) shifted in and made contact with the running rail of its own accord and became unbalanced.
SHINKICKIN COWGIRL (B. Stewart) was held up for clear running from entering the straight until near the 100m.

He further stated he was caught wide in the early stages and to obtain a position closer to the rail he was obliged to push forward to the lead near the 800m, however the horse failed to respond to his riding over the concluding stages. The explanation was noted.
A post race veterinary examination of SHINKICKIN COWGIRL revealed the mare to have been galloped on on the near hind hoof and had lost its near hind plate.

WHEEL THE LEAD (S. Seamer) and HELLO POSSUMS (J. Holder) raced wide throughout.
When questioned regarding the tactics adopted today on OLD BELVEDERE, jockey M. Du Plessis stated that his instructions were to ride the horse quietly from the wide alley in an endeavour to allow the gelding to settle. He further added that after obtaining a position at the rear of the field in the early stages, OLD BELVEDERE was inclined to overrace in the early and middle stages and when placed under pressure approaching the home turn failed to respond to his riding.
