Stewards questioned jockey N. Day in relation to the riding of MALKOVICH, in particular in the straight. N. Day stated that the horse had missed the start, which resulted in MALKOVICH settling further back in the field than anticipated, and that leaving the 600m the gelding commenced to hang in and the horse continued to hang in during the straight, which made it difficult for him to fully test the horse. N. Day added that MALKOVICH had hung in on a previous occasion, and when questioned regarding him not riding the horse out over the concluding stages, he stated that whilst the horse was hanging in he had no clear running at that stage of the race. The explanation was noted.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of LEICA CROWNIE, apprentice Rolls stated that after the horse had missed the start it settled at the rear of the field, however did not appear to be travelling well, and when asked for an effort after leaving the 800m, LEICA CROWNIE failed to respond to his riding and did not finish the race off as expected. Trainer C. Cousins agreed with the assessment of apprentice Rolls in that the horse was disappointing today and indicated that LEICA CROWNIE had pleased him in its preparation for today’s race. Mr Cousins was instructed to notify stewards of anything that may come to his attention in the following days that may have led to the disappointing performance.
