SUPPLEMENTARY REPORTS:
Stewards questioned trainer B. Azel regarding the withdrawal of JAMAICAN MAGIQUE from its engagement in race 1. Mr Azel stated that he nominated the horse for this race over 800m after receiving unsuitable barrier draws in other maiden races and was confident the horse would race well despite being up in class. He further stated that after accepting with JAMAICAN MAGIQUE, the filly showed signs of a viral infection, and after receiving veterinary advice he withdrew the horse from its engagement. He added that at all times he fully intended to run JAMAICAN MAGIQUE until it contracted the virus. The explanation was noted.
Apprentice C. Dixon was fined $50 for failing to provide a letter of authority from his master when his master was absent from the race meeting.
Race 1: Ipswich Cup 14th June Class 4 H’cap – 800m
1st – Pagan County 2nd – Laurie’s Lad 3rd – Mary’s Magique 4th – Queenie Amber
Trainer H. Richardson was fined $100 for failing to notify the removal of Shock Shod Shoes on QUEENIE AMBER.
LAURIE’S LAD (G. Butler) and QUEENIE AMBER (S. Richardson) were tightened for room on jumping away between EARLSTOUN FAIR (J. Murphy) and MARY’S MAGIQUE (R. Goltz), which jumped outwards.
Shortly after the start, QUEENIE AMBER (S. Richardson) had to be eased to avoid the heels of MY BOY LOLLIPOP (P. Hammersley), which shifted in when not clear. P. Hamersley, rider of MY BOY LOLLIPOP, was advised to provide more clearance when crossing in future.
LAURIE’S LAD hung out approaching the home turn and also hung out badly in the run to the finish.
PAGAN COUNTY raced 3 wide throughout.
Race 2: Woodstock QTIS 2yo Maiden Plate – 1100m
1st – Voodoo Bay Magic 2nd – Bay Trixie 3rd – Magic Procession 4th – Cashel Gemstone
Trainer M. Thexton was fined $200 for failing to notify riders for CASHEL GEMSTONE and ZEDZED by the prescribed time.
MAGIC PROCESSION (M. Traecey) and CLEAR STAND (M. Palmer) made heavy contact on jumping away.
MY CARA MIA (N. Day) and CARELESS AND CRAZY (K. Yoshida) also came together at the start.
CASHEL GEMSTONE (B. El-Issa) shifted out at the start and brushed ONE OCTAVE HIGHER (G. Colless)
MY CARA MIA (N. Day) was cramped for room after leaving the 800m by MAGIC PROCESSION (M. Traecey), which was inclined to race greenly.
Near the 350m, LIGHT SENSATION (R. Goltz) had to be checked when racing in restricted room between ONE OCTAVE HIGHER (G. Colless), which shifted in slightly, and MY CARA MIA (N. Day), which, when racing greenly, shifted out. N. Day, rider of MY CARA MIA, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
G. Colless, reported that ONE OCTAVE HIGHER was inclined to race greenly throughout the race.
ONE OCTAVE HIGHER raced wide for the majority of the event.
VOODOO BAY MAGIC (M. Cahill) shifted in close to the finish line and shortly after the finish post BAY TRIXIE (B. Looker) had to be checked. M. Cahill, rider of VOODOO BAY MAGIC, was reprimanded.
B. El-Issa reported that the saddle on CASHEL GEMSTONE shifted during running which placed him at a disadvantage.
A post race veterinary examination of BAY TRIXIE revealed the filly to have been galloped on on the off foreleg.
The club’s veterinary surgeon also reported that LICENCE TO STEAL pulled up lame in the near foreleg.
Race 3: Top Cut Foods QTIS 2yo Maiden Plate – 1100m
1st – Monsheree 2nd – Bennike 3rd – Calm Before 4th – Prohibition Lass
PRINCE OF ART (B. Looker) was slow to begin.
MONSHEREE (T. Pannell) also a little slow to jump.
ROSE ARCADE (P. Wolfgram) jumped outwards at the start, taking BENNIKE (B. El-Issa) out on to CALM BEFORE (G. Colless).
After being inconvenienced at the start, G. Colless, rider of CALM BEFORE, elected to shift across behind the field towards the rail, however when proceeding across the horse blundered when it appeared to clip the heels of MONSHEREE (T. Pannell) and the horse lost ground at that stage. G. Colless, rider of CALM BEFORE, was severely reprimanded and instructed to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Near the 900m, BENNIKE (B. El-Issa) shifted in, making heavy contact with PROHIBITION LASS (S. Seamer). B. El-Issa, rider of BENNIKE, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Passing the 250m, PICCOLO LATTE (K. Banks) was cramped for room between RIPPER (R. McMahon) and BLACK COUNT (P. Hammersley), which shifted in. PICCOLO LATTE then had to be eased and shift out around the heelsof BLACK COUNT.
B. El-Issa (BENNIKE) dropped his whip near the 200m.
Race 4: Yalumba Wines 3yo & Up F&M Maiden H’cap – 1200m
1st – Room Two Sister 2nd – Swirral Edge 3rd – Cooma Creek 4th - Lucyrox
RAGING FORTIES (L. Rolls) missed the start.
Apprentice M. Speers, rider of BILIS, was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in leaving the 1100m, making heavy contact with SWIRRAL EDGE (M. Cahill), forcing that horse inwards.
BILIS (M. Speers) dipped passing the 800m.
FLY MISTY (M. Traecey) was inclined to pull hard for some distance passing the 800m.
LISTERINA (B. Looker) raced wide for the entire race.
Apprentice B. Looker, rider of LISTERINA, was reminded of his obligations to ride his mount right out to the finish line.
Race 5: Slate Blended Bourbon 3yo & Up CG&E Maiden H’cap – 1200m
1st – Kayowed 2nd – Preception Bay 3rd – Seventeen Black 4th – Seven Dwarfs
Trainer R. Dart was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for SEVEN DWARFS by the prescribed time.
Trainer Mr N. Owen was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for KAYOWED by the prescribed time.
LAURELS was declared a late scratching at 2.01 pm on veterinary advice after the gelding reared in the barriers, striking its head. Subsequent to the event, all monies invested on LAURELS were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 27 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 19 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets. Connections were advised that that LAURELS must pass a barrier test prior to its next race start.
RICH BLUE DANE (A. Pattillo) was slow to begin.
Near the 500m, PASSIONATE STASH (G. Colless) shifted out, making heavy contact with TRIPWIRE (L. Cheshire), forcing that horse wider. MORE THAN PRIMED (P. Hammersley), which was racing to the outside of TRIPWIRE, was also forced wider.
A short distance later, TOKYO TANGO (R. Goltz) became unbalanced and raced ungenerously when taking a run to the inside of TRIPWIRE.
R. Wiggins, rider of WEEKEND GAMBLER, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 350m he permitted his mount to shift out from behind the heels of TRIPWIRE (L. Cheshire), resulting in ZEDZED (B. El-Issa) having to be checked. R. Wiggins was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 31 May and to expire at midnight, 9 June 2008.
G. Colless reported that PASSIONATE STASH travelled well in running, however when asked for an effort, the gelding did not finish the race off as expected.
Race 6: XXXX Class 1 H’cap – 1010m
1st - Jovelon 2nd – Party Lines 3rd – Detected 4th – Cool Edition
Trainer Mr S. Lee was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for MASTER MOZART by the prescribed time.
Trainer G. Marshall was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for DETECTED by the prescribed time.
Approaching the 600m, BET ‘N’ BARNEY (S. Bogenhuber) had to be steadied when racing in restricted room to the inside of SAPHIRA (R. Goltz), which shifted in momentarily.
Race 7: Schweppes Class 3 H’cap – 1200m
1st – Wigndove 2nd – Stella Joy 3rd – Bigga’n’betta 4th - Gunsari
Trainer N. Coy was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for AFLEET ZEPHYR by the prescribed time.
Following race 5, S. Galloway was examined by the club's doctor and stood down from his engagement on BIGGA ‘N’ BETTA. B. El-Issa was substituted as the rider of that gelding.
VICTORY HUGO was slow to begin.
Stewards questioned N. Evans in relation to his riding of VICTORY HUGO (N. Evans), particularly over the final 300m when an opportunity existed for him to take a run between EXTREME DANGER (A. Pattillo) and BEFORE HOLLYWOOD (K. Wharton near the 200m. N. Evans stated that he did not believe his horse was travelling well enough to take advantage of that run which appeared close to the finish of the race. He further stated he had placed the horse under pressure on straightening and close to the finish line the horse got its head up when it improved on to the heels of EXTREME DANGER. Trainer R. Cole stated he had given no specific instructions and indicated that he had supported the horse moderately, together with similar support from the owners. Their explanations were noted.
Race 8: Aristocrat Class 2 H’cap – 1350m
1st – Hesashow 2nd – Sozzani 3rd – Cyclone Larry 4th – Van Rooyen
BEE DUB (J. Murphy) was slow into stride.
HESASHOW (A. Pattillo) jumped away awkwardly.
CERTIORI (C. Dixon) was caught wide shortly after the start from its wide barrier and was obliged to raced wide for the entire race.
SPECIAL DAWN (C. Eaton) raced wide for the majority of the event.
Apprentice C. Dixon was fined $200 for excessive use of the whip on CERTIORI when that horse was out of contention.
Race 9: Club Partners Class 6 H’cap – 1690m
1st – The Cavern Club 2nd – Monaseeci 3rd – Spectacular Pic 4th – Yield Curve
BUCK’S CHARM (N. Thomas) faltered near the 800m.
SPRINTCAR (B. Looker) raced wide for the majority of the event.
An inquiry was opened into jockey R. Wiggins’ ride on MONASEECI, in particular over the final 600m. R. Wiggins stated he had been under specific instruction from trainer Dwyer to position the horse midfield and hold the horse up for as long as possible as it only possesses a short sprint. Mr Dwyer indicated he had specifically instructed jockey Wiggins to hold the horse up for a final sprint over the final 200m as the horse has shown in the past to be better suited when ridden this way. Trainer S. Dwyer stated that MONASEECI has not performed up to its best when ridden differently and that he was totally satisfied with R. Wiggins’ riding of MONASEECI. The explanation was noted for future reference.
