Race 1: Optus Business Direct Ipswich Mile 1MW H’Cap – 1666m
1st – Crossthestart 2nd – Plenty Of Practise 3rd – Bellagio Wynn 4th - Malandrina
Due to significant road works taking place between Brisbane and Ipswich a number of riders were delayed getting to the track for the first race. As a consequence of this Race 1 was rescheduled to 12.07 p.m.
Due to App A. Taylor having transport difficulties permission was granted for App C. Grylls to be substituted as the rider of ALTAICA. The explanation tendered by App A. Taylor regarding her late arrival was accepted.
On jumping ALTAICA was crowded for room between PALACE LOVER, which shifted out and PIT LANE, which left the gates awkwardly and shifted out abruptly.
In the early stages the saddle on PIT LANE shifted forward placing M. Palmer at a considerable disadvantage.
In the early and middle stages, due mainly to the pace, FROZONE was inclined to get its head up and pull.
In the middle stages some inconvenience was caused to CROSSTHESTART when PIT LANE was dropping back through the field.
Race 2: Ray White Ipswich Dash Class 6 Plate – 1100m
1st – Paymore 2nd – Attackum 3rd – Feline Hunter 4th – Circus Polka
As S. Scriven the declared rider for BEN HUR was delayed on the way to the course permission was given for J. Taylor to be substituted and this change was announced however, before J. Taylor had completed weighing out S. Scriven arrived and as he was keen to take the ride and the connections wished him to ride stewards allowed the original engagement of S. Scriven to stand.
S. Scriven was found guilty of a charge of misconduct under the provisions of AR83(a) for the manner in which he had behaved in the weighing room after arriving late to fulfil his engagement on BEN HUR. In all the circumstances of this case stewards believed that the appropriate penalty was for S. Scriven to be fined the sum of $400.00.
SILVERN shifted in at the start making heavy contact with TRUE FLYER, which then shifted in making contact with ATTACKUM.
CATTLEMAN jumped away awkwardly.
B. Stewart the rider of FIREDRAKE was found guilty of a charge of careless under the provisions of AR137(a) in that shortly after the start he carelessly failed to make great enough effort to prevent his mount from shifting in when not clear of CIRCUS POLKA. As a consequence of this incident CIRCUS POLKA was taken onto SILVERN, which lost its original running and was checked. B. Stewart’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of seven (7) meetings to commence immediately and to expire midnight 24 June 2009.
Near the 900m TRUE FLYER commenced to lay in placing ATTACKUM in restricted room for a short distance.
HAIL FREE was held up and unable to improve rounding the home turn and near the 300m improved up onto the heels of the tiring DOONBAH STAR and had to be steadied.
In the straight ATTACKUM experienced a lot of trouble obtaining clear running and was not able to be properly tested out until after the 100m.
Near the 200m FIREDRAKE shifted out slightly resulting in TRUE FLYER shifting ground towards HAIL FREE, which became unbalanced and shifted out abruptly causing COME SAID THE BOY to be crowded onto CATTLEMAN. The check to COME SAID THE BOY was one of significance however, stewards were satisfied that responsibility for the incident could not be attributed to any rider or riders and accordingly, no action was taken.
FELINE HUNTER and WIGNDOVE raced wide for the majority of the event.
App C. Grylls (CIRCUS POLKA) advised that he had spoken to trainer T. Vasil this morning and had been instructed to ride the horse close to the lead if possible. He said that if CIRCUS POLKA could not take up a position near the lead he was to come back slightly. App C. Grylls said that CIRCUS POLKA jumped well but shortly after the start he was crowded for room and as a consequence of this he thought that CIRCUS POLKA dropped the bit and got much further out of its ground than had been intended. He said that to make ground approaching the turn he had to travel very wide but then CIRCUS POLKA closed the race off strongly.
A post race veterinary examination of WIGNDOVE revealed the gelding had bled during the event. Trainer B. Trimble will be advised that WIGNDOVE would incur the mandatory three (3) month ban from racing.
A post race veterinary examination of COME SAID THE BOY revealed the gelding to have some blood in its mouth.
After the running of the event the track was upgraded to a Dead 4.

DEUX CHEVAUX proved difficult to manage in the mounting yard and on the way to the barrier.
DEUX CHEVAUX jumped awkwardly then was green in the early stages. Trainer Mrs G. Heinrich will be advised that should the filly perform similarly again action may be taken against it.
At the 800m LAST TANGO got onto the heels of IZACHAMP and lost considerable ground and was then obliged to race wide for the remainder of the event.
Leaving the 500m IZACHAMP shifted out taking DORSODURO out onto LAST TANGO.
In the early stages of the straight BEVAGNA shifted out a considerable distance under pressure. App J. Piper the rider of BEVAGNA was advised that she must stop riding and straighten her mounts when they shift ground earlier than she had done on this occasion.
Leaving the 300m SPIRIT OF FLATLEY shifted in of its own accord and made contact with the running rail.
A post race veterinary examination of DORSODURO failed to reveal any abnormalities.
A post race veterinary examination of BIG TONY failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 4: Schweppes T.L. Cooney QTIS 3YO H’Cap – 1350m
1st – Celestafy 2nd – Syndrome 3rd – Our Nautique 4th - Yatala
WARRIOR WITHIN was slow to begin.
Approaching the 1000m YATALA became unbalanced and was checked when momentarily crowded by MOULIN LADY (G. Colless), which was endeavouring to find a position closer to the rail. When YATALA checked OUR NAUTIQUE which was following was checked in consequence. It was decided to take no action however, G. Colless was reprimanded and advised he must exercise more care when shifting ground in future.
Near the 1000m READY TO RISE was steadied when momentarily crowded between CELESTAFY and MOULIN LADY.
Near the 300m READY TO RISE improved onto the heels of the tiring NIKKI BEACH and had to be steadied.
SYNDROME and OUR NAUTIQUE raced wide for the majority.
G. Colless (MOULIN LADY) explained from a difficult gate he was obliged to cover ground during the run but he was of the view that at no stage was MOULIN LADY stretching out as he thought it would and the run was in his opinion generally disappointing. A post race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have suffered a small laceration to the off side fore arm.
Race 5: Recruitment Queensland Gai Waterhouse Classic Fillies & Mares Quality H’Cap – 1350m
1st – Dorf Command 2nd – Go Johemma 3rd – Kisani 4th – Danehill Smile
TIPSY PIGGY was examined prior to the start and passed fit to start.
After arriving at the barrier S. Seamer (CALCHRIS) sought a veterinary examination as he was concerned with the way it had worked to the start. CALCHRIS was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to run. S. Seamer went on to say that he had been asked to have the horse in a forward position but despite his riding his mount was reluctant to stretch out and he had to ease up on the horse in an endeavour to get it on the bit.
BURGEIS was slow to begin.
In the early and middle stages LADY SHOWHEART pulled very hard and was obliged to race wide.
A post race veterinary examination of CALCHRIS revealed the mare was lame in the near fore leg. Before CALCHRIS races again a veterinary certificate of fitness will be required to be produced.
A post race veterinary examination of FIREGAZER revealed the mare had bled during the event. Trainer R. Hawkswell was advised that FIREGAZER would incur the mandatory three (3) month ban from racing.
Race 6: City Of Ipswich Eye Liner Stakes H’Cap – 1350m

Leaving the 900m SOMMERSEA DRIVE pulled up onto the heels of VOICE COMMANDER and had to be steadied. After being steadied SOMMERSEA DRIVE got its head up, hung out and covered a lot of extra ground.
Near the 400m TIME MATTERS (B. Rawiller) had to be shifted out to avoid JUNGLE RULER, which was stopping. When TIME MATTERS shifted out PRIDE OF POWER was carried across the heels of SOMMERSEA DRIVE and checked rather severely. Stewards considered that at the time of the incident the manner in which JUNGLE RULER was giving ground and the position on the track where the incident occurred were significant factors and accordingly, they believed it would be inappropriate to take direct action against B. Rawiller however, he was severely reprimanded and advised in similar circumstances in future he would be expected to exercise more care than he did on this occasion.
FRIENDLY EMBRACE was held up for clear running until near the 150m.
B. Evans the rider of MITANNI was fined the sum of $750.00 for making a celebratory gesture prior to reaching the winning post. B. Evans was advised that stewards would never wish to curtail his exuberance but his actions today were not to be repeated in future.
When questioned regarding the performance of CHARMING ROGUE jockey J. Bowditch said that the horse’s last run, first up from a spell was good, the horse’s work since had been good and it was anticipated that CHARMING ROGUE would run well today. He said that CHARMING ROGUE travelled kindly in the run and got to the front but had not then closed off the race as he thought it would. He could offer no real explanation but did think that the first up run that was on a heavy track may have had a bearing on the run today.
A post race veterinary examination of CHARMING ROGUE revealed no abnormalities.
A post race veterinary examination of JUNGLE RULER revealed no abnormalities.
A post race veterinary examination of EL CAMBIO revealed the gelding to have suffered a laceration of the off hind fetlock.

A post race veterinary examination of SPHENOPHYTA revealed the gelding to be making an abnormal respiratory noise. Trainers R. & C. Otto will be advised that a veterinary clearance and results of an endoscopic examination must be produced prior to SPHENOPHYTA racing again.

.
BOMBER COMMAND overraced in the early stages.
J. Taylor (REZYANA) said that his mount travelled well in the run but when IGUAZU improved quickly near the 700m he was unable to go with it and from thereon he thought REZYANA was well beaten and the horse just plodded to the line. He thought the run was flat and reported this opinion to the connections after the race.
HUNKA BURNIN’ LOVE and ANOTHER ALI were held up and unable to improve rounding the home turn.
A post race veterinary examination of MISS SHAYANNE failed to reveal any abnormalities.
