Race 1: SILKSTONE VETERINARY HOSPITAL F&M MAIDEN PLATE – 1350M
1st – Oligarch 2nd – Liberty Quest 3rd – I Excel 4th – Both Ears
As M. Wood was injured, M. Hellyer was substituted as the rider of OLIGARCH.
The declaration of correct weight was delayed slightly while J. Byrne (LIBERTY QUEST) viewed the Stewards’ patrol film to ascertain whether he had grounds for a protest against the winner for being inconvenienced between the 500m and the 300m. After viewing the video, J. Byrne chose not to proceed with an objection.
LIBERTY QUEST (J. Byrne) began awkwardly and lost some ground.
DIAMOND SILK (A. Smith) began very awkwardly and shifted in abruptly.
Near the 900m DIAMOND SILK, which was racing keenly, had to be checked off the heels of LOS ABRIGADOS (L. Rolls) which itself lost some ground. HONOUR ZEEL (L. Cumberland), which was following, was inconvenienced.
Near the 400m LIBERTY QUEST and OLIGARCH (M. Hellyer) bumped as OLIGARCH shifted out from behind I EXCEL (C. Munce) to improve.
Near the 200m OLIGARCH was steadied and shifted out when disappointed for a run between LIBERTY QUEST, which shifted in slightly, and I EXCEL, which shifted out away from BOTH EARS (J. Brown). In the circumstances no action was taken.
Apprentice M. Hellyer (OLIGARCH) explained that at the horse’s previous start, from the wide gate he went forward and raced outside the lead. He said in that event OLIGARCH was inclined to lay out from the 600m and because he had to make use of the mare early it failed to finish its race off and was slightly disappointing. He added that that race was an open maiden. He said in today’s event, from a better draw, he was able to ride the horse forward, however obtained cover behind I EXCEL. He said after this the mare settled very well and he was of the view that this enabled it to finish off better today than it did at its previous start. M. Hellyer further added that in his opinion the mare appreciated the soft track conditions of today’s event.
Race 2: SAWTELL TRANSPORT C,G&E MAIDEN PLATE – 1350M
1st – Cooinda 2nd – Tycoon’s Best 3rd – Sir Slipper 4th – Sir William
ALBERT’S CHOICE was a late scratching at 11.45 a.m. when it was unable to be transported to the track.
SPEED MAGICIAN (J. Warrington) stood flat-footed and lost considerable ground at the start. Trainer B. Trimble was advised that a warning would be placed against the gelding.
DAT PUFF (J. Taylor) was slow to begin and then was bumped by PAR FOR THE COURSE (J. Letherby) which began awkwardly and shifted in abruptly.
Shortly after the start BLEVIC DANCER (L. Rolls) was inconvenienced by TYCOON’S BEST (M. Hellyer), which shifted in.
PAR FOR THE COURSE raced three wide without cover for the majority of the event.
In the middle stages TYCOON’S BEST raced keenly.
Inside the final 200m M. Hellyer (TYCOON’S BEST) became restricted with the use of his whip by COOINDA (C. Munce), which shifted in when hanging.
Race 3: THE PROPERTY PALACE F&M CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1100M
1st – Running Royal 2nd – Kissing Type 3rd – Just Meille 4th – Miss Kaydee
Trainer K. Hickmott notified Stewards that he instructed S. Drake not to carry the whip on RETRACTED.
FORBIDDEN DRAGON (M. Hellyer) began awkwardly and stumbled.
MISS KAYDEE (R. Wiggins) began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped JUST MEILLE (G. Colless).
Near the 900m RUN BLONDIE RUN (J. Letherby) lost its off fore plate. Shortly after this JUST MEILLE was shifted away from the rail resulting in RUN BLONDIE RUN being taken out slightly. PSYCLONE MISS (C. Munce), which was to the outside of RUN BLONDIE RUN, was inconvenienced and had to be restrained.
FORBIDDEN DRAGON lost its near fore plate in running.
Race 4: SACRED HEART PRIMARY SCHOOL C,G&E CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1100M
1st – King Crusader 2nd – Power Report 3rd – Tradies Hope 4th – Rare Find
OPSHOP (B. Looker) stood flat-footed and lost ground at the start. Trainer D. Schmidt was advised that a warning would be placed against the gelding.
KING CRUSADER (P. Schmidt) and RARE FIND (J. Byrne) bumped at the start when both horses shifted ground.
ALL FEAR (C. Munce), which was trapped wide early without cover, raced fiercely.
After being crossed in the early stages SIR QUALIFIED (R. Goltz) overraced badly behind KING CRUSADER.
For some distance rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight KING CRUSADER was badly held up before obtaining clear running inside the 200m.
Near the 150m KING CRUSADER was accidentally struck across the nose by the whip of C. Munce (ALL FEAR).
R. Goltz (SIR QUALIFIED) explained that near the 500m he endeavoured to shift out from behind KING CRUSADER but was unable to do so when TRADIES HOPE (L. Cumberland) maintained its running line. He said because of this he was then held up and had to follow KING CRUSADER into the straight. He said when that horse shifted out he considered improving into a narrow run to the inside of MONASHEE SUCCESS (L. Rolls) but was concerned that horse was shifting ground slightly and for this reason he elected to commit to a run to the outside of that horse’s heels. Shortly after doing so MONASHEE SUCCESS shifted out slightly which would then have left a run for SIR QUALIFIED to the inside, however he was unable to alter his course as he had committed to the run and as a result of this SIR QUALIFIED was held up until about the 150m where it was shifted out and it improved into a run to follow KING CRUSADER. R. Goltz added that although in hindsight it may have been a better option to remain where he was racing on straightening he felt that after making the decision to shift when he did left him little alternative. R. Goltz added that although he did find clear running inside the final 100m he was of the view that SIR QUALIFIED was only passing tired horses over the concluding stages. R. Goltz’s explanation was noted.
Race 5: ST PETER CLAVER COLLEGE QTIS 3YO MAIDEN H’CAP – 1000M
1st – Seiyo 2nd – Sounds Of Crystal 3rd – Euro Girl 4th – Windel Tori
On jumping MISTER LOUIS (L. Cumberland) began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped OUR BOY BILL (P. Schmidt).
IRRESISTIBLE ME (N. Thomas), which bounded in the air at the start, was then crowded between SEIYO (J. Byrne) and HYDRAULICS (J. Letherby) both of which shifted ground. Shortly after this HYDRAULICS shifted out and ARABIAN SPARK (J. Taylor) shifted in, resulting in WINDEL TORI (C. Munce), which was drawn between them, being severely checked and losing considerable ground. The incident was deemed to be accidental.
HYDRAULICS, ARABIAN SPARK and WINDEL TORI all raced extremely wide throughout.
Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to SLOW 6.
Race 6: LES SCOTT – HOME LOAN SPECIALISTS 4YO & UP CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1666M
1st – Bandidas 2nd – Our Gold Stash 3rd – Rio Rex 4th – Coco Dubawi
Trainer T. Crane advised that from the wide draw at its last start, SERIOUSLY READY (J. Byrne) raced on the speed but weakened badly, however because of the favourable draw today he would endeavour to have the horse ridden further back than last start. The horse was ridden in a midfield position on the rail.
BOLD DANCER (D. Green), which was difficult to load, then stood flat-footed as the start was effected and took no part in the race. As BOLD DANCER had performed similarly at its previous start, trainer S. Essery was advised that the horse will require two barrier certificates, one of which is to be obtained in an official barrier trial. Mr Essery advised Stewards it was now his intention to retire the gelding.
On jumping OUR GOLD STASH (A. Kitson) and FLYING ARCHANGEL (L. Rolls) were badly hampered between BANDIDAS (G. Colless) and MEDIEVAL MYTH (N. Tomizawa), which began awkwardly and shifted in abruptly.
TEN PERCENT (J. Taylor) and SOSUEME (L. Cumberland) were slow to begin.
Near the 1400m KEEPONROLLING (P. Schmidt) had to be eased slightly to avoid the heels of MEDIEVAL MYTH which shifted in when barely clear.
When caught wide without cover in the early stages TEN PERCENT was allowed to stride forward to find a position closer to the lead.
In the middle stages RIO REX (K. Forrester) and OUR GOLD STASH raced wide.
For some distance from the 600m COCO DUBAWI (P. Hammersley) was held up behind a number of runners and then rounding the turn it was again unable to improve when racing behind BRIEF HAPPINESS (Matthew Palmer). COCO DUBAWI was then shifted inwards but again had to be checked off the heels of TEN PERCENT. COCO DUBAWI was then shifted out near the 200m and was able to obtain clear running to the outside of TEN PERCENT where it was able to be placed under full pressure and finish the race off strongly.
Apprentice P. Schmidt (KEEPONROLLING) explained that the horse raced in a handy position as anticipated and received some slight interference approaching the first turn. She said KEEPONROLLING was trapped at least three wide although it had cover throughout. She added that after the 700m she had to ride the horse along as it dropped the bit and it failed to respond to her riding and around the turn she commenced to lose ground. She said that in the straight she continued to ride KEEPONROLLING hard when it again picked up the bit and made some ground over the concluding stages. She said the horse in the past has run on rain-affected tracks and had been slightly disappointing, however she was of the view that the horse will perform better with an increase in distance and racing on a firmer surface.
MEDIEVAL MYTH lost its off hind plate in running.
Race 7: TOM BYRNES MEMORIAL CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1350M
1st – Darth 2nd – Mot De Passe 3rd – Ocean Sunset 4th – Trickin
DOWN ANOTHER TRACK was a late scratching at 9.00 a.m. on veterinary advice.
For some distance after the 700m RAVENDRA (L. Cheshire) and AMINUTEMORE (P. Schmidt) raced tight inside of DARTH (D. Green), then near the 500m RAVENDRA commenced to weaken and when doing so was taken in slightly by AMINUTEMORE, which itself was taken in slightly by DARTH. As the Stewards were not comfortably satisfied there was comfortable racing room for two horses to the inside of DARTH when they improved, no action was taken.
In the straight DUKE HOUSE (N. Evans) hung in badly.
Trainer H. Van Hoeyen (DARTH), when asked regarding the apparent improved performance of the gelding, stated that in her opinion at its previous start the horse was most disappointing and did not stretch out when placed under pressure. She added that following that run she had had the horse consulted by her chiropractor and was of the view this may have rectified any problem the gelding had had. She added that the horse has in the past shown it appreciates racing on softer surfaces. Ms Van Hoeyen was reminded of her obligations regarding reporting conditions which may have affected a horse’s performance and told that Stewards would expect that DARTH would now maintain more consistent performances in the near future.
