Race 1: Rob Stewart Memorial/SB Times/BP Roadhouse Nanango Mdn Plt – 1000m
1st – Johnny Fickle 2nd – Cloudy Night 3rd – Dame Judi 4th – Rock Sens
UWIBAMI (D. McMaster), which was having its first start since June 2011, was examined by the Club Veterinary surgeon prior to the start and cleared to race.
GEMS TATT (L. Appo) jumped out at the start and bumped UWIBAMI, which was slow to begin.
Shortly after the start ROCK SENS (W. O’Connell) and HAMMERSWAY (App R. Mercer) bumped on a number of occasions when both horses shifted ground.
CLOUDY NIGHT (App R. Payne) was inclined to lay out rounding the turn near the 700m.
JOHNNY FICKLE (R. Hancock) shifted in under pressure in the straight. Jockey Hancock was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances in future.
UWIBAMI (D. McMaster) raced wide throughout.
Jockey L. Appo, the rider of GEMS TATT was issued with a reprimand for using his whip in a forehand manner on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m.
Apprentice J. King, the rider of DAME JUDI was issued with a reprimand for using his whip in an excessive manner.
Trainer D. Peckett was advised that BEAU’S PRINCESS, which was unruly in the parade ring and again behind the barriers, where she dislodged jockey B. Powell, would be required to trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to the filly’s next race.
When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of JOHNNY FICKLE, trainer T. Moloney stated that he was reasonably confident of a competitive effort from JOHNNY FICKLE today, as the gelding had pleased him with its work since its last start, when it was having its first race start in nearly two years, and sat outside the leader and in his opinion the horses condition may have run out over the concluding stages, and he believed the gelding took benefit from the run. Mr Moloney added that he had instructed the jockey to ride the gelding a little quieter today in an endeavour to get JOHNNY FICKLE to finish the race off. He also added that JOHNNY FICKLE had had wind issues in the past and he had experimented with the addition of a tongue control bit to the horse’s gear which seems to have assisted the gelding’s performance in races.
Race 2: Anderson’s Produce/McDonalds K’roy/BGA Agri Service QTIS Class 1 H’cap – 1000m
1st – Raku Tu 2nd – Grandeur King 3rd – Backstreet Jack 4th – Ahsoka Tano
Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer P. Duff for the late declaration of rider for AHSOKA TANO.
GRANDEUR KING (L. Appo) was tightened for room at the start between RAKU TU (D. McMaster) and STORMY ARRIVAL (App R. Mercer) both of which shifted ground.
Near the 800m, GRANDEUR KING, which was over-racing, had to be steadied from the heels of STORMY ARRIVAL. As a result, POLLAXE (R. Hancock), which was following GRANDEUR KING, had to be steadied from the heels of that gelding.
WITH FRIENDS (App J. King) and AHSOKA TANO (W. O’Connell) raced wide throughout.
When questioned regarding the seemingly below market expectations performance of NATURAL MIST, apprentice T. Tincknell stated that she had been instructed to try to lead on the colt today, however she was unable to get NATURAL MIST to muster the necessary speed to lead. She added that the colt seemed to travel reasonably comfortably until she placed it under pressure near the 600m where it failed to respond to her urgings from that point and was disappointing in the run to the finish. App Tincknell added that in her opinion the colt may not have appreciated the firmness of today’s track condition. Trainer D. Gollan agreed with apprentice Tincknell’s assessment and undertook to report anything that may come to light in the coming days to stewards that may have effected the colt’s performance. A post-race Veterinary examination of NATURAL MIST did not reveal any abnormalities.
Race 3: Caroline Mufflers/SB Dental Group/Carrollee Hotel Class 4 H’cap – 1200m
1st – Leica Fuse 2nd – Go On Greg 3rd – Spello 4th – Dom Paolo
SPELLO (App J. King) jumped out at the start and bumped MISS GYPSY ROSE (App R. Mercer).
LEICA FUSE (R. Hancock) hung-out rounding the turn leaving the 700m taking DOM PAOLO (L. Appo), THE REGAL ONE (App R. Payne) and MISS GYPSY ROSE wider on the track.
MISS GYPSY ROSE raced wide throughout.
Race 4: Kumbia Hotel/SB Regional Council/Kingaroy Real Estate Class B H’cap – 1200m
1st – Roped In 2nd – Frayed 3rd – Naval Action 4th – Mini Style
FRAYED (App R. Mercer), OUT OF CHARACTER (D. McMaster) and NAVAL ACTION (App T. Tincknell) were slow to begin.
MINI STYLE (App R. Payne) raced wide throughout.
CHARMING ALLY (R. Hancock) was disappointed for a run near the 200m.
Near the finish line, CHARMING ALLY was tightened for room between MINI STYLE, which was inclined to shift in and away from NAVAL ACTION, which shifted in under pressure, and BUTCH (App J. king).
Race 5: Huston Ford Nissan Suzuki Kumbia Cup Open H’cap – 1200m
1st – Ima Joker 2nd – Release Me 3rd – Chief Chargingbear 4th – Dairy
MONCHING (App J. King) raced wide throughout.
