Jockey Philpot reported CAPE HULA HULA had been kicked behind the barriers.
Stewards granted permission for Jockey G. Kliese (FLASH BANG) and S. Morris (KONINGIN STAR) to ride ½ kilogram and 2 kilogram overweight respectively, due to no other rider being available to ride at or closer to the allotted weight.
Stewards inquired into the start of this race and after taking submissions from all riders and the official starter, and on viewing of the patrol films, Stewards established that while the start was not effected by the starter, all runners were not materially disadvantaged.
Stewards noted that FLASH BANG (G. Kliese) which lost ground at the start had its s head being turned at the time the barriers opened and were of the opinion that this did not constitute the mare being denied a fair start.
Stewards have considered an application made by Jockey S. Morris to be declared a non-runner, in that KONINGIN STAR was denied a fair start. Accordingly, Stewards declared KONINGIN STAR a non-runner due to not being properly placed in the barrier, and when the barriers opened, the mare’s start was prejudiced by the attendant who had hold of the mare and was in the barrier.
Prior to the announcement of correct weight, Stewards ordered that all monies invested on KONINGIN STAR be refunded, and that all bets made with bookmakers be paid less the following deductions; 5 cents in the dollar win and 6 cents the place.
FLASH BANG over raced in the early stages of the event.
A post-race veterinary inspection of FLASH BANG revealed the mare had bled from both nostrils. Trainer T. Crossland was advised the mare would now be barred from racing for 3 months and of further requirements under AR 53. Subsequent to the event, Mrs Crossland advised FLASH BANG had pulled a plate in running and was lame.
