MACKAY TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT. 15/03/2003
STEWARDS PANEL: Mr. G. Hargraves (Chairman), Mr. B. Chestermaster, Mr.T.Moloney.
WEATHER – FINE TRACK – GOOD RAIL – Out 3m from 900m to winning post.
GENERAL – An inquiry was conducted into the result of QLD Health and Scientific Services analyst’s finding of a urine sample delivered by trackwork rider Mr Jonathan Millwood at Mackay trackwork on Tuesday the 7th of January 2003 the result being that the sample was positive to cannabis. Mr Millwood pleaded guilty to a charge under Australian Rule of Racing 81A (1) (a) in that he had a banned substance, namely cannabis, in his system when he rode trackwork at Ooralea Racecourse Mackay on Tuesday morning the 7th of January 2003 and was suspended from riding trackwork for a period of 3 months to take effect from the 25th of January 2003, the day he was stood down, up to and including the 25th of April 2003.
RACE 1 MAQUIRES HOTEL OPEN HCP 1050M.
MINI ME & MONO BLUE were slow away.
REGAL STRIKE jumped away awkwardly.
MINI ME was held up for clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
A post race vet inspection of TOP MOVE revealed this gelding to have suffered a laceration to the near hind tendon.
TALE OF TRIOMPHE cast its off fore plate in running.
RACE 2 XXXX CLASS 1 HCP 1050M.
MY PONDEROSA was a late scratching at 12.28pm by order of the stewards after it cast a front plate and damaged its hoof.
THE BONDI EXPRESS jumped away awkwardly and made contact with BALBRIDIE.
DONKHAL shifted out on jumping away and hampered SPECTACULAR SKY & MAJOR BLAZE.
Inside the 200m P. Cullen the rider of DONKHAL had to stop riding and straighten that gelding when it was inclined to shift in under pressure.
Jockey Ms. J. Pujolas was reminded of her obligations to ensure she fully rides her mounts out to the finish.
Jockey D. Lloyd was questioned over his tactics on KARION AGAIN in particular as to why he persisted to ride that gelding forward three wide and not take a sit when it was obvious that the leaders SEAGATE & BALBRIDIE were not going to concede the lead. He stated that his instructions were to ride KARION AGAIN forward but by the time it became obvious that he was not going to be able to lead he was passing the 600m mark and he felt his best option was to stay where he was whilst the gelding was still travelling ok. He added that ultimately the extra effort told on KARION AGAIN and it failed to finish the race off. His comments were noted.
RACE 3 TOOHEYS CLASS 4 HCP 1050M.
Trainer M. Attard was fined $25 for presenting JUST ON DUSK to the enclosure with the incorrect gear.
Jockey C. Schumacher was reprimanded for permitting his mount LIBERTY LAD to shift in approaching the 900m when not clear of SOLID REASON & DANCE AT HOME which resulted in both those horses being tightened for room and buffeted for a short distance.
Near the 700m DANCE AT HOME had to be steadied off the heels of SOLID REASON, which shifted in.
Near the 200m SOLID REASON had to be checked when disappointed for a run between LIBERTY LAD & I’M NOT NOSY both of which shifted ground.
When questioned over the improved performance of JUST ON DUSK Trainer M. Attard stated that the mare races well when held up at the rear of the field and that at its previous start in Rockhampton was ridden forward contrary to how it is normally ridden and that this had a detrimental affect on it’s chances. His comments were noted.
RACE 4 CHANNEL 7 MAIDEN HCP 1250M.
Soon after the start CALLOG STAR raced greenly for a short distance and shifted inwards away from the rest of the field.
RIVIERA PLAYBOY got its head down soon after jumping and raced very ungenerously for some distance. Trainer M. Stehbens stated that she felt the gelding might have resented the fact that a small saddle and girth was used and that she would experiment by taking the blinkers off. Her comments were noted however Ms Stehbens was advised that RIVIERA PLAYBOY would have a warning placed on it in relation to its racing manners.
RIVIERA PLAYBOY cast its off hind plate in running.
A post race vet inspection of first starter CALLOG STAR that tailed off failed to reveal any abnormalities. Jockey M. Young stated that the gelding felt as if it was field shy in the early stages but for the remainder of the race failed to stretch out and show any interest. Trainer D. Erricker was advised that CALLOG STAR would be barred from racing until it trials satisfactorily.
RACE 5 HOT FM CLASS 6 HCP 1500M.
CARLTON LAD & QUICK HELLO were slow away.
Near the 400m QUICK HELLO which was racing ungenerously shifted in abruptly and tightened the running of CARLTON LAD which had to be checked.
RACE 6 TW HEDLEY CLASS 2 HCP 1500M.
Jockey M. Young was unable to make the weight on AZTEC COPPER and was replaced by P. Cullen. M. Young was fined $50.
THE BONDI EXPRESS, which competed in Race 2 on the programme, was examined by the vet and passed fit to start.
HIP HIP HURRAH jumped with its head up and lost ground.
Near the 1300m STEGASAURUSES which got its head up and was racing fiercely shifted in when not clear of THE BONDI EXPRESS which had to be checked. As a consequence CEETU, which was following, was hampered. Whilst stewards attributed much of the blame on the racing manners of STEGASAURUSES nevertheless its rider Apprentice T. Matheson was reminded of her obligations to ensure she does everything in her power to keep her mounts straight.
A post race vet inspection of HARRY JUNIOR, which finished well back, failed to reveal any abnormalities. Jockey A. Cox stated that the gelding raced very ungenerously throughout and was very disappointing. He added that whilst the gelding felt good in its action he felt there was something amiss with HARRY JUNIOR. Trainer J. Manzelmann stated he was disappointed with the effort and put it down to the fact that HARRY JUNIOR may have been suffering the effects of a traffic accident en route to Rockhampton races 3 weeks ago. He added that the gelding didn’t appear to suffer any injuries or ill effects from the accident and had pleased prior to today’s race. Their comments were noted however Mr. Manzelmann was reminded that in accordance with rule AR140(a) he was obliged to report to the stewards any condition or occurrence that may have affected the running of his horse. Mr. Manzelmann was also put on notice that a similar occurrence would not be tolerated. HARRY JUNIOR was swabbed.
ALL WINNERS AND HARRY JUNIOR WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
