SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT: Mackay 26th June 2012:
Race Khalu Konstructions QTIS 2-Y-O Handicap, 1100metres
Stewards today inquired into the reasons surrounding FRAIDSO (D. Simmons) having to be checked and lose ground near the 1000 metres. After taking evidence from Jockey Simmons and App. S. Egan, the rider of SPIRIT OF A DRAGON, stewards established that SPIRIT OF A DRAGON was inclined to shift in away from POP OPERA (F. Edwards). As a result SPIRIT OF A DRAGON shifted in and crowded the running of FRAIDSO, resulting in that runner having to be checked to avoid the heels of SPIRIT OF A DRAGON. Stewards were of the view that the racing manners of SPIRIT OF A DRAGON contributed to the incident and consequently trainer O. Cairns was advised that a warning will be placed on the racing manners of that colt. Nonetheless, App. Egan was reminded of his obligation to make every endeavour to prevent his mounts from shifting ground when insufficiently clear of other runners.
Late Riding Changes:
When Jockey T. O’Hara was injured and unable to fulfil her engagements, substitutions were made as per the Stewards Raceday Summary. When App. A. Taylor, the substituted rider for MONNIE in Race 1, was late arriving on course because of transport difficulties, App. A. Allen was substituted.
Race 1: Carlton Mid Fillies and Mares Class 3 Handicap – 1300 metres
1st – MISS PARMA 2nd – SHEZA FALVELON 3rd – ROCKET ON POP 4th – ARRESTED FOR SPEED
When Jockey F. Edwards, the declared rider for SOME JOY, was late arriving on course due to transport difficulties, Jockey W. D’Avila was substituted.
Shortly after the start MONNIE (App. A. Allen) shifted in and made contact with LIL MISS DYNAMITE (D. Simmons). A short distance later MONNIE was tightened for room between LIL MISS DYNAMITE and LADY BULLMORE (J. P. Stanley), which shifted in.
SHEZA FALVELON (A. Coome) was inclined to hang out from the 600 metres until approaching the home turn, where it had to be steadied from the heels of ROCKET ON POP (T. Bannon).
Near the 200 metres ARRESTED FOR SPEED (App. C. Pye) shifted out under pressure and made contact with MAID OF FALVELON (D. Missen). SHEZA FALVELON (A. Coome), which was following, had to be steadied and was obliged to change course to obtain clear running.
A post-race veterinary examination of LIL MISS DYNAMITE (D. Simmons), which compounded badly over the concluding stages, did not reveal any abnormalities. Connections of LIL MISS DYNAMITE were advised that, in the light of today’s performance the mare’s racing will be restricted to Non TAB events until it establishes form.
Race 2: Daily Mercury QTIS 2-Y-O Handicap - 1200 Metres
1st – HOLD THAT THOUGHT 2nd - SOME JOY 3rd – MISHANI SINNER 4th – COURT AFFAIRE
Apprentice S. Egan, the declared rider for CRAIGLEA TURBO, was reprimanded under A.R. 92 for being able to claim only 1.5 kg of his 3kg allowance. In assessing penalty stewards took into account Apprentice Egan’s good record in this regard.
On jumping, HOLD THAT THOUGHT (J. P. Stanley) was tightened for room between CRAIGLEA CARINA (A. Coome) and FROZEN CREST (App A Allen), both of which shifted ground.
Shortly after the start RADIANT JOY (R. McMahon) was tightened for room between SOME JOY (W. D’Avila) and SPARKLING ZIZOU (T. Bannon), both of which shifted ground.
COURTE AFFAIRE (G. Cullen) raced wide throughout.
Following the race the veterinary surgeon reported that MISHANI SINNER (D. Missen) was suffering from a seasonal complaint.
Stewards sought an explanation from App. A. Allen regarding the seemingly poor performance of FROZEN CREST. App. Allen stated that the filly travelled well in running and approaching the home turn he was confident that FROZEN CREST would finish the race off well, however the filly failed to respond to his riding and in his opinion was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of FROZEN CREST did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer G. Taylor informed stewards that the filly will be sent for an immediate spell.
Race 3: - Bacardi Lion Maiden Handicap - 1100 metres
1st – MENDEZ 2nd – TRUSTY GREY 3rd – BOTH EARS 4th – HATZIS
LEICABLE LARRIKIN (W. D’Avila), MIDGENOO (I. Toward) and HATZIS (A. Coome) were slow to begin.
Approaching the 600 metres BONNAY FLYER (J. P. Stanley) improved onto the heels of TANMEYYA (T. Bannon) and had to be steadied. LEICABLE LARRIKIN (W. D’Avila), which was following, was also steadied.
In the home straight MENDEZ (App. A. Holt) was inclined to lay in under pressure and near the 100 metres shifted in, which resulted in BOTH EARS (App. D. McWhinney), which was following, being obliged to shift wider on the track to improve.
Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey A. Coome regarding the performance of HATZIS. Jockey Coome stated that the gelding took up its customary racing position worse than midfield and after settling down seemed to lose concentration at various sections of the race which required him to apply pressure in order to hold his racing position. Jockey Coome added that he placed HATZIS into clear running upon straightening and commenced to pressure the gelding, however HATZIS did not respond to his riding or accelerate as expected until inside the 100 metres, where HATZIS made some ground. Jockey Coome noted that the gelding would take benefit from today’s performance. The explanations were noted.
Race 4: Samuel Smith & Sons Class 1 Handicap – 1100 metres
1st – STATION MASTER 2nd – SECRET SCENE 3rd – CLICK UP 4th – SAINT BELLE
HER DIAMONDS (D. Simmons) began awkwardly.
LOSANA (T. Bannon) was slow to begin.
Near the 600 metres ALANDY LAD (J. P. Stanley) hung out for a short distance and had to be steadied from the heels of SECRET SCENE (R. McMahon).
Jockey J. P. Stanley reported that ALANDY LAD commenced to hang in approaching the 200 metres, resulting in him going to the line without being able to fully test his mount.
Over the final 100 metres CLICK UP (A. Coome) shifted out under pressure and near the 50 metres Jockey Coome had to stop riding and straighten CLICK UP.
SPARTANEOUS (App. D. McWhinney), SAINT BELLE (App. A. Allen) and HER DIAMONDS (D. Simmons) raced wide throughout.
Race 5: Mackay Turf Club North Queensland Derby 1800 metres
1st – DAMN GOOD IDEA 2nd – BEAR IN THERE 3rd – SARBI 4th – MUKTASHEF 5th – KING RAY
At the start BEAR IN THERE (App. S. Egan) shifted out and made contact with MUKTASHEF (D. Missen). A short distance later BEAR IN THERE was tightened for room between MUKTASHEF and BLAST OUT OF HERE (F. Edwards), which shifted out.
Leaving the straight on the first occasion DIAMOND ACE (App. C. Pye) shifted out, taking BLAST OUT OF HERE (F. Edwards) wider.
Passing the winning post on the first occasion COOLSHOW (W. D’Avila) shifted in and had to be momentarily steadied from the heels of ANGEL FROM ABOVE (App. A. Taylor).
For a short distance approaching the 800 metres SARBI (T. Bannon) raced in restricted room and when being steadied by its rider threw its head in the air.
On straightening for home DAMN GOOD IDEA (R. McMahon) was held up and unable to improve until obtaining clear running approaching the 300 metres.
Race 6: Champion C Stud & Equestrian Centre Newmarket Open Handicap – 1300 Metres
1st – KILWINNING OPTION 2nd – ACHIEVEMENTS 3rd – CRAIGLEA TINA 4th – RELEASED 5th – WANDERING STAR
The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow connections of SAINTLY DANCER (F. Edwards) to view the video film of the start to see whether the mare had been denied a fair start. After viewing the films it was established that SAINTLY DANCER reared as the start was effected resulting in the rider of that mare striking his head and upper shoulder on the barrier partition and almost being dislodged. Consequently SAINTLY DANCER lost considerable ground and took no competitive part in the event. Stewards found that SAINTLY DANCER had not been denied a fair start and was therefore declared a runner. Trainer Ms O. Cairns was advised that the mare must obtain a further barrier certificate before being permitted to race again.
EIGHT PIECES (D. Simmons) was slow to begin.
For some distance leaving the 1200 metres VANTABULOUS (T. Bannon) over-raced when in restricted room.
APACHE PUP (G. Cullen) and FOUR IRON (J. Babarovich) raced wide throughout.
EIGHT PIECES (D. Simmons), which compounded over the concluding stages, was pulled up by its rider after passing the winning post. Jockey Simmons reported that the gelding felt sore behind. A post-race veterinary examination of EIGHT PIECES revealed that the gelding had previously been diagnosed as a roarer, and was very stiff in both hind legs. Connections were advised that they must provide a veterinary clearance before EIGHT PIECES will be permitted to race again.
A post-race veterinary examination of ELASTANE (App. A. Taylor) revealed that the gelding had a small laceration to the right hind leg.
Race 7 – Channel 7 Class 6 Plate – 1560 metres
1st - BARAMUL BULLET 2nd - ATTALLUS 3rd - HERITAGE STAR 4th - SEAFIGHT
Trainer D. Symons advised stewards that, from its wide barrier, TIMETABLE (T. Bannon) will be ridden in a rearward position, contrary to its normal racing pattern. Public announcements were made accordingly.
Shortly after the start BARAMUL BULLET (I. Toward) was tightened for room between ATTALLUS (App. A. Holt) and ROCK RAVE (App. C. Pye), which shifted in when being restrained.
Apprentice A. Holt pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that leaving the 1300 metres he permitted ATTALLUS to shift in when not sufficiently clear of BARAMUL BULLET (I. Toward), which was taken in onto CHINRUB (A. Coome), which was checked. Apprentice Holt was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on Tuesday, 10th July 2012, up to and including midnight on Tuesday 17th July 2012, a period covering 6 meetings.
Approaching the 300 metres SPEEDSKATER (App. A. Allen) shifted in and bumped ROCK RAVE (App. C. Pye), which became unbalanced for several strides.
Near the 200 metres ROCK RAVE (App. C. Pye) was obliged to shift wider on the track to obtain clear running, and in doing so forced SEAFIGHT (R. McMahon) wider on the track.
Following the race it was noted that ROCK RAVE (App. C. Pye) had bled from both nostrils. Trainer T. Cook was advised that, as this was the first occasion on which the gelding had bled, it will be barred from racing for 3 months under A.R. 53A.
Stewards sought an explanation from trainer J. Wehlow and Jockey R. McMahon regarding the tactics adopted on SEAFIGHT today. Jockey McMahon explained that he had been instructed not to bustle the horse as at its most recent start SEAFIGHT had a tendency to over-race. Jockey McMahon stated that whilst the horse travelled some distance from the remainder of the field, approaching the 600 metres he began to place pressure on the gelding and SEAFIGHT was able to gain a trailing behind ROCK RAVE. Jockey McMahon added that he then applied full pressure from the 400 metres and once he obtained a run to the outside in the home straight SEAFIGHT finished the race off well. Trainer Mr J. Wehlow confirmed the instructions issued to Jockey McMahon and agreed that the gelding raced in accordance with its customary racing pattern. Mr Wehlow informed stewards that he now intended to step the horse up in distance. The explanations were noted.
A post-race veterinary examination of PANKRATOV (J. P. Stanley) revealed that the horse was lame in the near foreleg . Trainer C. Morgan will be advised that he must furnish a veterinary clearance before being permitted to race again.
ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED and pre-race swabs were taken from WANDERING STAR, LADY BULLMORE, CRAIGLEA TURBO, HATZIS, ARRESTED FOR SPEED, GIG GUIDE, DAM GOOD IDEA, CHINRUB, HERITAGE STAR, ACHIEVEMENTS, KILWINNING OPTION, MUKTASHEF
