On returning to scale Jockey A. Coome reported to stewards that FOUR IRON travelled well until near the 600 metres, however when placed under pressure failed to respond to his riding and was disappointing in the run to the finish. Jockey Coome added that in his opinion the gelding may have come to the end of its current preparation.

Following the running of this race, at 2.30 p.m., the track rating was downgraded to a Dead (5).

Race 5: Hot FM Open Handicap - 1300 metres
1st BARAMUL BULLET/SARBI (DH) 3rd CHINRUB 4th - MISTABLISTA

Following the running of Race 4 in downgrading of the track to a Slow (6), stewards discussed the state of the track with riders and trainer representatives. It was agreed that the principal concern for the riders was the poor visibility as a result of the heavy rain. It was agreed that, provided the visibility did not deteriorate, the meeting should proceed. As a consequence of the wet weather conditions and its effect on the gear of riders, stewards permitted Jockey C. Whiteley to ride CRACK A SMILE ½ kg above its declared weight and Jockey I. Toward to ride BARAMUL BULLET 1kg above its declared weight.

Due to a technical malfunction the photo-finish camera failed to operate. After viewing the available video evidence, in the absence of any evidence to the contrary, stewards agreed with the judge’s placings and declared correct weight as follows: BARAMUL BULLET and SARBI Dead Heat for 1st; CHINRUB 3rd; MISTABLISTA 4th.

At the start CHINRUB (A. Coome) was tightened for room and lost ground when racing between HERITAGE STAR (App. E. Ljung) and CRACK A SMILE (C. Whiteley), which was taken outwards by TEDDY BARE (App. C. Pye), which in turn was taken outwards by MISTABLISTA (App. S. McCullum)

Near the 450 metres HERITAGE STAR (App. E. Ljung) broke down badly in the off foreleg and was retired from the event. TEDDY BARE (App. C. Pye) shifted out and away to avoid HERITAGE STAR and OUR BOY LUKAS (D. Missen) shifted out in an evasive action, taking MISTABLISTA (App. S. McCullum) wider. Subsequently HERITAGE STAR was euthanased in a humane manner.

App. S. McCullum was fined $100 under A.R.137A(5)(a)(ii) for using his whip on MISTABLISTA in a forehand manner on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100 metres.

Race 6: Daily Mercury Class 2 Handicap – 1100 metres
1st SOLIDIFY 2nd BALLROOM DANCE 3rd HELP ME RHONDA 4th - BROTHER BOB

OUR BOY BILL refused to load into the barriers. Stewards ordered the withdrawal of the gelding at 4.48 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on OUR BOY BILL be refunded in full and that the following deductions apply:

3¢ in the dtollar for the place for the winner, SOLIDIFY
4¢ in the dollar for the place for 2nd, BALLROOM DANCE
4¢ in the dollar for the place for 3rd, HELP ME RHONDA

Trainer L. Wright was advised that OUR BOY BILL must perform to the satisfaction of stewards in an official barrier trial before being permitted to race again. Mr Wright advised stewards that it is his intention not to continue with the horse’s preparation.

Leaving the 100 metres KILLER WASP (M. Usher) was momentarily tightened for room and forced to ease when racing to the inside of BALLROOM DANCE (D. Evans), which was taken in by BROTHER BOB (App. E. Ljung), which had a tendency to lay in when placed under pressure, despite the efforts of its rider.
