Race 1: Mareeba Leagues Club QTIS Maiden Plate 1123m
1st –What’s Buzzing 2nd- Strictly Amazing 3rd- Unicaleo 4th-Slap Shot
At the start HIDDEN ICON [F Edwards] shifted in and bumped WILL HE FLY [M Atkinson]
Upon jumping, CITING (B Swaffer) threw its head in the air and lost considerable ground. It then raced wide rounding the home turn. In light of its racing manners, stewards sought an explanation from apprentice Swaffer and his master Trevor Rowe and their explanations were duly noted.
Race 2: Central Tyre Service Class B Handicap 1010m
1st – Stieg 2nd – Little Miss Eva 3rd – Vital Gee 4th – Kandee Queen
Due to a mix up with RISA jockey R Ryan was declared as the rider of ELLERSLIE LAD instead of S Pawsey. S Pawsey took the engagement.
At the start, VAULTING QUEEN [S Kaya] jumped out and inconvenienced ELLERSLIE LAD [S Pawsey].
Approaching the 800m, KING AMONG KINGS [K Rockett] had to be eased to avoid the heels of LITTLE MISS EVA [K Stone] which was racing erratically.
ELLERSLIE LAD [S Pawsey] raced wide throughout.
Jockey S Kaya, rider of VAULTING QUEEN, reported that his mount hung out rounding the first turn.
Race 3: Ian Johns Builder Trophy Class B Handicap 1500m
1st – Beverly Hills 2nd - Koolasacat 3rd – Jewels ‘n’ Shoes 4th – Spurparts
KOOLASACAT [R Ryan] was slow to begin.
TIBOOBURRA EMMA [M Atkinson] raced wide throughout
SPURPARTS [K Rockett] hung out rounding the home turn and into the straight.
Jockey S Kaya was questioned regarding his use of language passing the winning post and for a considerable distance thereafter. Jockey Kaya pleaded guilty to using obscene language and was fined $100 under rule AR.175.(q).
Race 4: 4AM – KIKFM Class 6 Plate 900m
1st – Sun Warrior 2nd – Lyndi’s Gift 3rd – Pete The Clown 4th – Physics
Approaching the 100m, LYNDI’S GIFT [K Stone] had to severely check and alter course around the heels of SUN WARRIOR [S Pawsey]. At a subsequent inquiry jockey K Stone was advised that in future he should endeavour to use more caution and should not attempt runs where there is insufficient room.
A post race veterinary examination of LYNDI’S GIFT revealed the mare to be lame in the near front leg. Trainer R Baker was advised that he would have to produce a veterinary certificate prior to LYNDI’S GIFT being allowed to race again.
A post race veterinary examination of SUN WARRIOR revealed the gelding to be lame in the near front leg. Trainer F Wieland was advised that he would have to produce a veterinary certificate prior to SUN WARRIOR being allowed to race again.
Race 5: Mareeba Express Class 3 Handicap 1210m
1st – Champagne Buzz 2nd – Special And Grand 3rd – De Ville 4th – Go Amigo
Correct weight was delayed to allow jockey W D’Avila to view the patrol footage of the race. After viewing the film jockey D’Avila had no further complaints and correct weight was semaphored.
Jockey M Atkinson was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground when he allowed SHEZZA RICHES to shift in just after the start which tightened the running of several runners inside.
