Mickey’s Falvey (M Wood) became unbalanced approaching the 1000 mtrs and lost ground. Jockey Wood felt that the horse had a disliking to the sand track causing it to become unbalanced.
Race 3: INDUSTREA LORD DERBY STAKES CLASS 3 PLATE 1200 METRES:
1st – AUSSIE ROCK 2nd – HARDHEADED 3rd – FINAL SCORE 4th – IN ALCATRAZ
Aussie Rock (M Tarrant) blundered when the field was released shifted out and brushed Party Charter (T Hill).
In Alcatraz (D Jones) was slow to begin and lost considerable ground.
Final Score (App J Rudd) Jumped awkwardly when released got its head up and became unbalanced.
Aussie Rock lay out over the final stages when under pressure despite the efforts of the rider.
Stewards questioned jockey D Jones over the performance of In Alcatraz and he stated that the gelding refused to race during the early stages despite his urging. He then stated that nearing the 600 mtrs he pulled the whip and struck In Alcatraz on several occasions with very little response from the gelding. He further stated that when he shifted wide at the top of the straight away from the dust that In Alcatraz began to make ground and went to the line strongly. Jockey Jones was of the opinion that In Alcatraz was a very lazy horse and he felt that should he be ridden closer to the pace next start the gelding may race with more enthusiasm. Jockey Jones explanation was noted.
.
Race 4: HUDDY MEMORIAL BRACELET WEIGHT FOR AGE 1100 METRES:
1st - HEADLIGHT 2nd – BLAZING MOA 3rd – MONTE SEE 4th – MIND SQUARE
Mind Square (App C Pay) jumped outwards when released taking Monte See (M Wood) out onto Roughriding (M Tarrant) resulting in both of these runners being checked and losing ground.
Headlight (D Ballard) and So Shiny (T Hill) came together at the start and bumped with So Shiny becoming unbalanced.
Approaching the 700 mtrs So Shiny became unbalanced when racing to the inside of Headlight got her head up and shifted out across the heels of Headlight. Jockey Hill when questioned stated that So Shiny had a distinct disliking to dust in her face and this had caused her to become unbalanced and shift out. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
Blazing Moa (A Spradau) was under pressure over the final 300 mtrs and failed to run on. A Subsequent veterinary examination revealed that the gelding had small abrasions to his off hind fetlock.
Race 5: HUDDY’S PLANT HIRE SPRING CUP OPEN HANDICAP 1450 METRES:
1st – FABULOUS FUHRLONG 2nd – NEWS TO ME 3rd – WHYDINYA 4th – VICTORY SANDS
Coolabah Kid (M Cummings) was slow to begin.
Palisade (T Brummell) lost ground early stages as the gelding had no early speed.
Byword (D Jones) rolled in approaching the 650 mtrs and momentarily crowded Victory Sands (D Ballard) which eased.
Stewards questioned App C Pay over the tactics employed on News To Me and he stated that the owner Mr A Saunders had instructed him to lead. However whilst attempting to lead in the early stages after drawing a wide barrier, he was placed in a position 3 wide without cover, and was of the opinion that had he pressed on he would have been worse off so he elected to ease approaching the 1000 mtrs, and take the sit behind the leaders where the gelding travelled extremely well, giving News To Me every chance in the race. He further stated that when News To Me was placed under pressure the gelding responded and went to the line strongly. He again stated that had he pressed on for the lead the gelding would not have finished as strongly as she did. Stewards noted App Pay’s explanation.
