The start was delayed when BANK OF PRUSSIA proved hard to load. Trainer J. Schnitzerling was advised a warning would be placed on that filly’s barrier manners.
The start was further delayed when STARDUST MEMORIES was declared a late scratching at 1.41pm when that mare was unable to be loaded. Trainer T. Gillespie was advised that a barrier certificate would be required prior to STARDUST MEMORIES next start.
On announcement of correct weight all monies were ordered to be refunded and deductions of 33 cents the win and 21 cents the place bets were applicable above the line.
Trainer J. Lyons was questioned as to why he was late on course with LIGHT THE SKY. After taking all evidence into account, trainer J. Lyons was advised that arriving late on course in the future would not be tolerated.
Stewards opened an inquiry into the reason why TILGI fell approaching the 200 metres, dislodging its rider T. Pattillo. Racing to the outside of TILGI was NOBLE CRUISE (C. Kearney), which was seriously inconvenienced and also fell dislodging C. Kearney. Directly behind TILGI was MICK’S DANCER (R. Hancock) which in turn cannoned into NOBLE CRUISE and fell dislodging R. Hancock. ROSA RULER was unable to avoid the fallen horses and was also brought down, dislodging its rider P. Clark.
Evidence was taken from riders C. Kearney and apprentice R. Hancock, however the inquiry was adjourned until a date to be fixed to enable T. Pattillo and P. Clark to provide evidence. Both TILGI and ROSA RULER were euthanased on humane grounds. Riders C. Kearney, P. Clark and apprentice R. Hancock were examined by the ambulance officer and passed fit to fulfil their engagements.
An inspection of the course proper near the 200 metres was undertaken prior to the running of race two with the examination revealing no defects in the racing surface.
Race times were amended as follows:
Race 2 2.35pm
Race 3 3.15pm
