Race 5: CID Burke Memorial Class 2 Handicap 1600m

1st – Fantastic Carat 2nd- Boyng 3rd- Craiglea Gal 4th- Arabia

Stewards considered an objection lodged by M. O’Brien, the rider of the second placed runner BOYNG, against FANTASTIC CARAT, ridden by R. Hancock, being declared the winner, alledging interference over the final 200m. After considering the evidence of both riders, connections, the available race footage and stewards own observations, it was established that BOYNG had established a run to the inside of FANTASTIC CARAT shortly after entering the home straight, and that at a point near the 150m, FANTASTIC CARAT has shifted in when insufficiently clear of BOYNG, forcing that runner to be steadied by its rider and shift to the outside of FANTASTIC CARAT to obtain clear running. Stewards in considering all the evidence could not be comfortably satisfied that the interference suffered by BOYNG exceeded the one and half length margin at the finish, dismissed the objection, and declared correct weight on the Judge’s semaphored numbers of 8, 3, 4 and 6.

At a subsequent inquiry, R. Hancock, the rider of FANTASTIC CARAT, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that he permitted his mount to shift in near the 150m when insufficiently clear of BOYNG, forcing the rider of that runner to steady her mount. R. Hancock’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period covered by 6 meetings, to commence at midnight 2 October 2011 and expire at midnight 14 October 2011.

OWIE (J. Johnson) was slow to begin.

AREDIAN STAR (E. O’Connell) was tightened at the start between THE MAJOR (K. Pedron) and GOLD RECORD (T. Huxham) which shifted in.

FLYBEFREE (B. Powell) shifted in shortly after the start and had to be steadied from the heels of FUZZALAMA (R. Jamieson).

BOYNG (M. O’Brien) had to steadied off heels of CRAIGLEA GAL (L. Finlay) near the 1000m, and had to again be steadied off the heels of FANTASTIC CARAT (R. Hancock) near the 300m.
