ROCKHAMPTON JOCKEY CLUB
STEWARDS REPORT – 2ND NOVEMBER, 1999
STEWARDS: G. RUDOLPH (CHAIRMAN), K. BEAN, G. MEEK, M. PEARSON (BETTING)

WEATHER: FINE TRACK: DEAD

RACE 1 CLASS 6 HCP, 1400 METRES – (5 STARTERS): The start of the race was delayed due to W. Welburn the rider of MR. ZODIAC arriving late, after having to fulfil riding engagement at the Yeppoon Turf Club.
The start was further delayed when it was established that prior to the start of the race Trainer Fred Smith (ROSE OF ARAWATTA), had notified Stewards that he was unaware that ROSE OF ARAWATTA had obtained a 1.5kg penalty for her win at Mackay races on Friday 29th October.
It was further established that M. Goodwin the rider of ROSE OF ARAWATTA had weighed out at the allotted 54kg instead of the penalty weight of 55.5kg. Subsequently the start was delayed due to a lead bag being transported to the barriers and ROSE OF ARAWATTA having to be resaddled.
After questioning both M. Goodwin and trainer F. Smith, both were reminded of their obligations under AR121 that states that trainers are responsible for their horses carrying all proper weight and penalties and in all cases where penalties have to be carried for winning, the trainer or rider must notify the Clerk of the Scales. Stewards took into account that the substitute Clerk of the Scales today was unaware that ROSE OF ARAWATTA had sustained a 1.5kg penalty and no further action was taken against either party.
G. Booth the rider of OPERATION PAYBACK, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding for permitting the gelding to shift in when not clear of ROSE OF ARAWATTA near the 1100 metre mark, resulting in that mare being checked. A short distance late ROSE OF ARAWATTA shifted out when OPERATION PAYBACK steadied the pace and in turn took MR. ZODIAC wider on the track. G. Booths licence to ride in race was suspended for a period of 2 Capricornia Racing Association meetings to commence immediately and expire on Thursday 11th November, 1999.
Over the concluding stages of the event JUST KEN was inclined to lay in under pressure and made contact with ROSE OF ARAWATTA, resulting in ROSE OF ARAWATTA being turned out after contact was made with the mares hind quarters. Both rider were reminded to exercise care when shifting ground when it was established that ROSE OF ARAWATTA had also shifted out under hard riding close to the post. Stewards were concerned with the riding actions of both M. Unwin and M. Goodwin over the final stages in that they had become physically entangled near the finishing line. After establishing that M. Unwin became unbalanced after making contact with ROSE OF ARAWATTA no action was taken against either rider however they were reminded of their obligations to ride in a proper manner.

RACE 2 CLASS 4 HCP, 1000 METRES – (5 STARTERS):. STARGARD shifted out and hampered STORMY CIRCLES at the start.
LORD LIDO was slow to begin.
Passing the 600 metre mark PIPER SANDS had to be steadied off the heels of STORMY CIRCLES which shifted in.
PIPER SANDS got its head up and raced ungenerously for a short distance.

RACE 3 2YO MAIDEN HCP, 1000 METRES – (9 STARTERS):. Stewards adjourned an inquiry into the reason why J. Pointon failed to scratch FRED’S GAL by the required time.
J. Pointon had nominated S. Quick as the rider of that filly, however S. Quick had been engaged at Yeppoon and was unable to take the mount. Subsequently FRED’S GAL was declared a late scratching at 3pm.
Mrs C. Dore the trainer of PIPER’S EVENING was reprimanded for failing to bring that filly on course prior to the prescribed time before the event. Mrs Dore stated that she had previously had a runner engaged at Yeppoon. For this reason Stewards advised Mrs Dore that in future she was to make proper arrangements to have her horses on course one hour prior to the advertised starting time of the race.
RELUCTANT BID which was slow to begin was hampered between BANATINSK and LAYTON both of which shifted ground. A veterinary examination of BANATINSK which compounded in the straight revealed the filly to have sustained cuts to the inside of both hind pasterns as well as being sore in the off side front knee.

RACE 4 MAIDEN HCP, 1300 METRES – (9STARTERS): JUST A TRADE and MISS TARSHO came together at the start.
RAMBO’S KWILA jumped awkwardly and hampered MISS TARSHO.
Passing the 800 metre mark RAMBO’S KWILA had to be steadied off the heels of JULIE MAGIC when the pace slackened and again near the 700 metre mark.
Passing the 300 metre mark JULIE MAGIC was briefly held up for clear running and had to be steadied off the heels of CARDIOLOGY and a short distance later off MISS TARSHO.
Over the concluding stages BARTER CARD shifted out under pressure taking RAMBO’S KWILA wider on the track. M. Goodwin was advised to exercise care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.

RACE 5 CLASS 2 HCP, 2025 METRES – (7 STARTERS):. TITIVATE was hampered on jumping away between WARRANULLA and BOLD GAUL both of which shifted ground.
Stewards questioned S. Quick and trainer Mr. C. Lisle relative to apprentice S. Quicks handling of TITIVATE throughout the race. Stewards were concerned that Shayla Quick rode the mare in a manner which may have been contrary to her chances in the early stages of the race in that she attempted to engage in a speed batter with THE CRAW. They further were concerned that in the middle stages that apprentice S. Quick had an opportunity to settle TITIVATE in behind THE CRAW however, she failed to exercise this option. Apprentice S. Quick was severely reprimanded for what, in the opinion of the Stewards, was a poorly judged ride. S. Quick was advised that should she ride in a similar manner then the Stewards would consider a more severe stance than they did on this occasion.

RACE 6 OPEN HCP, 1200 METRES – (11 STARTERS):. DIRECT WEALTH knuckled over on jumping and lost ground.
Approaching the 800 metre mark OUTBREAK shifted in slightly resulting in DIRECT WEALTH which was racing ungenerously, to be checked. WINGED FLAME which was also following was also hampered as a result, and obliged to steady off the heels of DIRECT WEALTH.
Passing the 600 metre mark DIRECT WEALTH shifted out resulting in MR. BOONE being checked and HARD EARNED THIRST which was racing on the outside of MR. BOONE being hampered. Stewards considered evidence that DIRECT WEALTH contributed to the incident and apprentice D. Evans could not be apportioned for the blame for shifting out. DIRECT WEALTH again shifted in near the 500 metre mark resulting in WINGED FLAME being hampered.
Trainer D. Badham was subsequently advised that in future the Stewards would prefer a senior rider engaged for that gelding, as his racing manners had indicated that the horse would benefit from an experienced rider as opposed to an apprentice.
Passing the 300 metre mark PACKY’S PLOT shifted out to obtain clear running and hampered MR. BOONE. M. Goodwin the rider of PACKY’S PLOT was advised to exercise care when attempting similar runs.
Passing the 200 metre mark WINGED FLAME which commenced to lay in down the straight was hampered when OUTBREAK (J. Piper) shifted in under pressure. J. Piper was severely reprimanded and advised that he would be expected to make more endeavour to keep his mounts on a straight course.

SWABBING: All winners were swabbed and those samples obtained were sent to the Racing Science Centre for routine analysis.
BOOKMAKERS: 4 Bookmakers fielded at the meeting.
