STEWARDS REPORT – FRIDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER, 2001

WEATHER: FINE TRACK: GOOD

GENERAL

As R. Mules was indisposed through injury the following replacements were approved:
Race 2 ANOTHER POWER G. Evans
Race 8 LAURIES BOY D. Rewald

As T. Williams was indisposed the following replacement was approved:
Race 2 STARLIT PASS D. Simmons

Stewards adjourned and inquiry into the reason why T. Williams was unable to fulfil his engagement on today’s programme.

RACING:
RACE 1 CLASS 5 HCP. 1300 METRES (5 STARTERS).. EXECUTIVE ROOM was declared a late scratching at 8.07am. Trainer K. Smyth was fined the sum of $50 for failing to scratch EXECUTIVE ROOM by the prescribed time.
A Williams the rider of SPORADIC was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts out fully to the end of the race. In reaching this decision, stewards could not be satisfied that A. Williams actions had cost him second placing in the event.
LEICA NATURAL (NZ) and DANGOLD came together at the start.
Following todays race meeting trainer B. Williams reported that SPORADIC pulled up lame in the near fore leg.

RACE 2 MAIDEN HCP. 1300 METRES (9 STARTERS). ANOTHER POWER (G. Evans) lost ground at the start after throwing its head in the air as the gates opened.
ON HIS OWN (W. Welburn) failed to negotiate the first turn and shifted out, resulting in ITALIAN STAR (J. Stephens) being tightened onto NOT TELLING YOU (M. Barnham). HAPPY FESTIVUS (D. Johnston) which was following had to be steadied off the heels of ITALIAN STAR in this incident.
Inside the 600 metres ITALIAN STAR which had commenced to race ungenerously shifted out and momentarily tightened HAPPY FESTIVUS onto MUSICAL SPIN (D. Rewald).
Inside the 300 metres ITALIAN STAR shifted out to obtain clear running and as a result ANOTHER POWER (G Evans) shifted out and away from that runner, resulting in HAPPY FESTIVUS having to be steadied by its rider when forced out across the heels of MUSICAL SPIN.

RACE 3 FILLIES & MARES CLASS 4 HCP 1200 METRES (6 STARTERS). Trainer R. Mannion was fined the sum of $50 under AR117 for presenting ACE DARLING late on course. In addition trainer R. Mannion was also fined the sum of $50 under AR59a for failing to present the document of description for the above mentioned mare.
Apprentice C. Taylor was fined the sum of $50 under AR145 for weighing in excess of a half a kilogram over weight.
ACE DARLING (D. Evans) threw its head in the air and lost ground at the start.
A post race vet examination of ACE DARLING revealed the mare to have a laceration inside the mouth.

RACE 4 CLASS 1 HCP 1200 METRES (8 STARTERS). ST. ANTON jumped away awkwardly.
A short distance after the start FINAL JET (M Evans) shifted out and hampered CARANI (M. Unwin). As a result of the pace slackening rounding the first turn FINAL JET blundered after striking the heels of ZORICA (NZ) (C. Beets). A post race vet examination of ZORICA (NZ) revealed the mare to be stripped on the off hind hock.

RACE 5 CLASS 3 HCP. 1000 METRES (8 STARTERS)..Stewards agreed to a request by trainer L. Ross to allow apprentice C. Taylor to only claim 1.5kg of his 3kg entitlement on RANDOM RIVER. No action was taken against apprentice Taylor but he was advised to make contact with the stewards on the Downs and South West Region where he is domiciled and discuss a set riding weight.
RANDOM RIVER (C Taylor) was crowded for room at the start between ALPAGO (M. Unwin) and BOOBOO (M. Evans) both of which shifted ground.
Approaching the 500 metres RANDOM RIVER blundered after racing up onto the heels of ALPAGO.

RACE 6 SPECIAL CONDITIONS HCP 1100 METRES (9 STARTERS) PARIS BEAU was declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 8.27am.
CORONATION WAYS (P Wheeler) reared as the gates opened and lost ground as a result.
Approaching the first turn CITICHARM (D. Whitmore) shifted out and made contact with OELAND (J. Stephens). A short distance later OELAND shifted out abruptly and when being corrected by its rider shifted in and hampered CITICHARM. As a result QUICK LOVE (C. Beets) which was following shifted out after steadying off the heels of CITICHARM and as a result tightened HAS IT ALL (D. Johnston) onto NAUTICAL MUNDA (M. Unwin) which then shifted wider on the turn.
OELAND commenced to race ungenerously after this incident and approaching the 600 metres again shifted in and momentarily hampered CITICHARM.
Stewards questioned W. Welburn regarding his riding of BURNING ZONE in the home straight and in particular his use of vigour over the concluding stages. W. Welburn stated that upon entering the straight it was his intention to follow CITICHARM through on the fence, however he was unable to obtain clear running for some distance. Approaching the 200 metres he stated that he was then still unable to improve when racing to the inside of the heels of QUICK LOVE and elected not to shift across that runners to obtain clear running to the outside. W. Welburn further acknowledged that in the circumstances he could have ridden more vigorously over the concluding stages. Stewards noted these explanations.

RACE 7 OPEN HCP 1800 METRES (10 STARTERS) A. Williams the rider of VOLCANIC SPARKLE was fined the sum of $50 under AR145 for returning to scale in excess of 1/2kg overweight.
TOTAL GLANCE (D. Johnston) commenced to race fiercely when being restrained shortly after the start.
Passing the winning post on the first occasion RECEPTOR (D. Evans) shifted out abruptly after making the crossing awkwardly which resulted in contact between that runner and HEAVENLY CID (M Unwin) which in turn shifted out resulting in DESERT PHOENIX (NZ) (W. Welburn) having to be checked after being tightened onto INTAJAZ (G. Evans). NORPICK (M. Evans) which was following was obliged to race wide around the turn to avoid this interference.
NORPICK was then obliged to race wide in the middle stages.
Approaching the 250 metres SEAHAWK MISS (D. Rewald) had to be steadied off the heels of RECEPTOR (D. Evans).

RACE 8 CLASS 2 HCP 1400 METRES (12 STARTERS) POKER blundered as the gates opened.
LAURIE’S BOY (D. Rewald) which had raced ungenerously at stages throughout the event shifted in abruptly despite the efforts of its rider approaching the 200 metres which resulted in LONGREACH (J. Stephens) having to be checked by its rider. Trainer Ms. S. Lawlor was advised that LAURIE’S BOY must barrier trial to the stewards satisfaction prior to its next race start. In reaching this decision stewards took into account that the gelding had a previous warning placed on its racing manners on the 11/8/01.

BOOKMAKERS: Two (2) bookmakers fielded at the race meeting.
SWABBING: All winners were sent to be swabbed and the samples collected were forwarded to the Racing Science Centre for routine analysis.
