Race 3: XXXX Gold Class 2 Handicap – 1500 Metres

Trainer S. Potiris reported that MON CHOIX pulled up well following the race and had no apparent significant abnormalities. He said that in his opinion the gelding had failed to handle the prevailing track conditions.

Following the race trainer Mr D. Hansen reported to the stewards that GASEOSA had pulled up fine and was not showing signs of any abnormality, however he was of the opinion that the gelding had failed to handle the track conditions and was unsuited by the step up in distance. He further advised stewards that in future he would be nominating GASEOSA for events over a shorter distance.

When the start was effected, CRAIGLEA EDGE (A. Coome) slipped behind and began awkwardly.

At the start READY RIPPER (J. Stephens) was crowded for room between CRAIGLEA GAL (K. Wharton) and BOATFULLOFMONEY (App. A. Taylor), which shifted out.

Approaching the first turn CRAIGLEA GAL (K. Wharton) improved up onto the heels of QUEEN OF HAPPINESS (App. K. Cross) and had to be steadied.

On the first turn MALEATON (L. Dillon) was caught four wide and then was obliged to race wide for the majority of the event.

Race 2: CQ Powder Coaters Class 6 Plate- 1400 metres
1st RED STORY 2nd CITIWYSE 3rd – ROGERRAB 4th – GUILTY CONSCIENCE

Jockey M. Radecker was inadvertently shown in the Race Book as the rider of GUILTY CONSCIENCE when Jockey G. Baker was the declared rider.

TAYANSO (App. C. McIver) was slow into stride, began awkwardly and was caught wide in the early stages.

SPINNING MASTER (C. Whiteley) missed the start and began awkwardly.

When questioned about the performance of CITIWYSE Jockey K. Wharton explained that as the horse was stepping up in distance to 1400 metres, connections had instructed him to ride CITIWYSE quietly in the early stages. He stated that due to the solid pace set by ROGERRAB (App. A. Badger), CITIWYSE was under pressure from the 800 metres and had to sustain a long run to the finish. Trainer P. Fleming stated as the horse had not raced in 5 weeks and may have done too well in that period and as a consequence would take benefit from today’s event. The explanation was noted.

Following the race it was noted that KING KANAWA (App. C. Pye) had bled from both nostrils. As this was the second occasion on which the gelding had suffered a bleeding attack, stewards ordered that the horse be barred from racing for life, under A.R. 53A(5).

Stewards received a deputation from senior riders, who expressed a concern that horses had slipped in the going between the 800 metres and the 600 metres. Stewards, in company with the course curator, Mr R. Harris and the Club’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr D. Cox, carried out an inspection of this section.
