GENERAL:
Apprentice J. Wood pleaded guilty to a charge under AR 87B in that he had in his possession a modified safety vest. Apprentice Wood was fined $500.
Late Riding Changes:
When Jockey A. Coome was to be overweight on 4 occasions, substitutions were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. Jockey Coome was fined a total of $500 under A. R. 120(b).
Race 1: Welcome Back to Callaghan Park Class 5 Handicap - 1500 metres
1st – ROYAL THIEF 2nd – BEAU DE LAGO 3rd – OUR SCOOBY DO 4th – TIMECALL
REAL WORLD (N. Patchett) and BODY DOUBLE (App. T.O’Hara) made contact on jumping.
BEAU DE LAGO (App. C. Priest) began awkwardly, then near the 1300 metres commenced to race fiercely and continued to do so until entering the home straight.
REAL WORLD (N. Patchett) raced three wide throughout.
Race 2: Bacardi & Cola QTIS 2YO Handicap - 1050 metres
1st – BONNY THE VIPER 2nd – MISTER TIPS 3rd – DOREBOY 4th – AUSTANA
The start was slightly delayed when it was noticed at the barriers that DOREBOY (App. J. Wood) had blood in its mouth. The horse was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and was cleared to start.
TEAANNA LASS (J. Stephens) and DANDAR SAVANNAH (S. Watkin) were slow to begin.
DOREBOY (App. J. Wood) jumped outwards at the start.
A post-race veterinary examination of CARLSON’S LAD (App. T. O’Hara), which finished tailed off, revealed that the gelding was showing signs of muscle soreness in its back. Trainer P. Camilleri will be advised that he must furnish a veterinary clearance prior to CARLSON’S LAD being permitted to race again.
When questioned about the performance of DANGAR DIVA, Jockey G. Lee explained that while it had been intended to race in a forward position, the horse did not travel well and was under pressure to maintain its position throughout the event. Jockey Lee added that DANGAR DIVA finished the race off only fairly and in his opinion was disappointing.
When given the opportunity to explain the performance of CRAIGLEA MUSTANG, Jockey K. Wharton stated that in his opinion CRAIGLEA MUSTANG had raced like a tired horse following a heavy preparation and was disappointing.
Race 3: Follow Us on Facebook QTIS 2YO Handicap - 1050 metres
1st – SHEZA DRAGON 2nd – TESTYA TIME 3rd – KING RAY/SHEZA FALVELON D/H
Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer S. Kendrick for the late declaration of Jockey T. Bannon was the rider of SHEZA FALVELON.
THINK PINK (App. C. Priest) was standing awkwardly in the barrier when the gates opened and consequently was slow to begin.
SHEZA FALVELON was slow to begin.
CRAIGLEA MARLENA (K. Wharton) began awkwardly and then in the early stages raced wide.
For a short distance near the 900 metres THINK PINK over-raced.
Approaching the home turn TESTYA TIME (S. Watkin) hung out.
In the early part of the straight THINK PINK was held up and unable to obtain clear running, and at approximately the 400 metres shifted out to improve.
ALEXABAR (App. T. O’Hara) and FERTIRO (App. J. Kropp) raced wide throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey K. Wharton for the performance of CRAIGLEA MARLENA. Jockey Wharton said that the horse began awkwardly and got further back than its usual racing pattern. Jockey Wharton added that in his opinion CRAIGLEA MARLENA raced below expectations and in his opinion may have reached the end of its preparation.
Jockey S. Watkin was reprimanded under A.R. 137(b) for failing to ride TESTYA TIME out right to the finish. In assessing penalty stewards took into account that the actions of Jockey Watkin had no bearing on the placings in the event, and also that Jockey Watkin had an exemplary record extending over a number of years.
Race 4: Bacardi & Lemonade Class 2 Handicap - 1050 metres
1st – SCAPA 2nd – CRAIGLEA FIGHTER 3rd – MONTE STARLIGHT 4th – SPEEDOMETER
Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer D. Symons for the late declaration of Jockey S. Watkin as the rider of INSURMOUNTABLE.
At the start SPEEDOMETER (D. Missen), TOUGHENED (I. Coombes), INSURMOUNTABLE (S. Watkin) and MONTE STARLIGHT (App. C. Priest) were tightened between SHE’LL BE DANCING (R. Mules) and CRAIGLEA FIGHTER (K. Wharton), both of which shifted ground. In the incident SPEEDOMETER lost ground.
TOUGHENED raced wide throughout.
Following the race Jockey R. Mules reported that SHE’LL BE DANCING slipped behind on jumping and lost some ground.
App. C. Priest reported that MONTE STARLIGHT was inclined to lay in over the concluding stages.
When asked about the performance of OVERBOARD, Apprentice J. Wood stated that the horse was having its first start following a spell, was racing over an unsuitable distance and was not suited by the fast early pace. Apprentice Wood said that when it became balanced in the straight OVERBOARD made steady ground and in his opinion would benefit from the run.
Race 5: www.callaghanpark.com.au Class 6 Plate - 1050 metres
1st – FALVALEA 2nd – DINERO RAPIDO 3rd – BOBERG 4th – WHITE CAP
Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer P. Pengelly that EAGLE JESTER was late arriving on course because of traffic delays. A pre-race swab sample was taken from the gelding.
BOBERG (J. Stephens) was permitted to race without pacifiers. Stewards will seek an explanation from the Trainer Service Centre in relation to the gear change.
DELAGO MONEY (T. Bannon) and EAGLE JESTER (App. C. Pye) were slow to begin.
At about the 900 metres KOICHI (D. Missen), shifted in, placing HUSS (A. Coome) in restricted room and taking that horse in onto the hindquarters of ADMIRAL GHERKIN (S. Watkin), which was turned out and tightened the running of HUSS, which lost ground.
Near the 600 metres KOICHI (D. Missen) lay in and tightened the running of ADMIRAL GHERKIN (S. Watkin), which was taken in onto the heels of BOBERG (J. Stephens), resulting in ADMIRAL GHERKIN having to be checked and lose ground.
Approaching the 400 metres KOICHI (D. Missen) shifted in onto the hindquarters of GENERAL GHERKIN (S. Watkin), which shifted outwards abruptly, resulting in KOICHI being take outwards and EAGLE JESTER (App. C. Pye) being forced wider on the track.
Shortly after this incident KOICHI was retired from the race. A post-race veterinary examination of KOICHI revealed that the horse had bled from both nostrils. Trainer S. Kendrick was informed that KOICHI would be barred from racing for three months under A.R. 53A. On advice from the veterinarian, Mr Kendrick was further advised that he must furnish the results of an endoscopic examination on completion of the 1000m gallop. Mr Kendrick informed stewards that KOICHI will now be retired from racing.
DINERO RAPIDO (App. J. Wood) and EAGLE JESTER (App. C. Pye) raced wide throughout.
Race 6: Bacardi & Ginger Ale Maiden Plate - 1200 metres
1st – RAPID MOTION 2nd – MALEATON 3rd – HANDFULOFHUNDREDS 4th – COSHO
Shortly after the start HANDFULOFHUNDREDS (T. Bannon) was restrained and shifted inwards to take up a position close to the running rail.
RAPID MOTION (L. Dillon) began awkwardly and became unbalanced.
From the 600 metres to the 400 metres HANDFULOFHUNDREDS) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.
MISS ALLYKAT (J. Stephens) and DARK HOMBRE (G. Lee) raced wide throughout.
When asked about his riding of COSHO over the final 100 metres Apprentice J. Wood explained that he was concerned about the action of the gelding at that stage of the event and for that reason he did not ride COSHO out as he would normally. A post-race veterinary examination of COSHO did not reveal any abnormalities.
When asked about the performance of BIDDYDONGOOD, App. J. Kropp stated that the gelding travelled well throughout the race and ran on fairly in the straight. Apprentice Kropp added that as BIDDYDONGOOD had not raced for some time, the gelding yielded ground over the final 100 metres.
Jockey G. Lee, the rider of DARK HOMBRE, was reminded of the rules relating to the use of the whip on horses out of contention. DARK HOMBRE lost its off hind plate in running.
Race 7: XXXX Gold Class 4 Handicap - 1200 metres
1st – CAPTAIN DARLING 2nd – MIO AMICO 3rd – ZENACITY 4th – TWOGUNDAN
Stewards accepted the reasons tendered by trainer D. Symons and trainer A. Bennett for the late declaration of Jockey S. Watkin for OLD MATES ACT and Apprentice J. Wood for INTENT respectively.
OLD MATES ACT (S. Watkin) was slow to begin.
At approximately the 900 metres SNARED (L. Dillon) when being restrained from heels of CAPTAIN DARLING, commenced to over-race, shifted out and made heavy contact with TWOGUNDAN (K. Wharton).
In the early stages TWOGUNDAN raced wide.
Near the 400 metres CAPTAIN DARLING (App. C. Pye) rolled in momentarily and bumped SNARED (L. Dillon), which was taken in, bumped the running rail and became unbalanced for a short distance.
At the 300 metres ZENACITY (R. Hall) was unable to obtain clear running and was shifted out to improve.
INTENT (App. J. Wood) raced wide throughout.
Race 8: XXXX Bitter Class 1 Handicap - 1200 metres
1st – GARRISON GOLD 2nd – ARCTIC BEAR 3rd – MONNIE 4th – OCCLO
When the start was effected LUCKY MONEY (K. Wharton) stood flat-footed and lost considerable ground. Trainer’s representative Mr T. Cook submitted that it would be intended to remove the blinkers from the filly’s gear. Nevertheless, Mr Cook was informed that the filly will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the stewards in a barrier jump-out before it would be permitted to race again.
MORE THAN RUBIES (R. Hall) dipped shortly after the start.
INNOCENTAKE (App. S. McCullum) began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped RED SAVANNAH (App. T. O’Hara), which lost ground.
