GENERAL
When jockey J. Baker was overweight on LUCIDITY (R1) and CURRAWEE LASS (R5) and there was no other suitable rider available, stewards permitted J. Baker to ride both runners a half kilogram over their declared handicap weight. J. Baker was subsequently fined $200.
Apprentice J. Grob was reprimanded for failing to provide a letter of authority to stewards.
Stewards considered an application from jockey J. Missen to be paid a riding fee on the basis that he had been engaged to ride LA CLOISONNE in race 3 at today’s meeting. Evidence was taken from J. Missen, trainer J. Patterson and stablehand M. Patterson. On the evidence before them, stewards found that there had been some miscommunication in regards to this matter and that trainer J. Patterson had not personally engaged J. Missen to ride LA CLOISONNE. Furthermore due to a personal matter, Mr Patterson had not been contactable in the days leading up to the meeting. The application was subsequently denied.
SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT
From Dalby 8.3.14 – Race 6
Stewards concluded their inquiry into jockey John Kehoe’s riding of SUPERCHEAP over the final 100m of the Benchmark 60 Hcp 2000m. After taking further evidence from J. Kehoe, stewards found that approaching the 100m, jockey Kehoe attempted to change his whip from his right hand to his left hand at which point the whip became entangled in his reins resulting in him losing his grip on his reins and ultimately his control of SUPERCHEAP. As a result of this, jockey Kehoe was unable to test his mount over the final 100m and in an attempt to gain control of his mount, restrained SUPERCHEAP over the concluding stages which had a detrimental effect on SUPERCHEAP’s finishing position.
J. Kehoe pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137A5 (a)(ii) in that he used his whip in a forehand manner on 11 occasions prior to the 100m. J. Kehoe was fined the sum of $300.
Stewards in considering the riding actions of John Kehoe and also a further breach of the rules relating to the use of his whip, he was directed under the provisions of AR92A(2) to attend a session with the Riders Review Panel.
Race 1: Williams Hall Chadwick QTIS Maiden Plate 1000m
AZORAR (R. Payne) stood flat footed at the start and lost ground. Trainer J. Curtain was advised that a warning would be placed on the barrier manners of AZORAR.
THUNDA COOKIE (M. McGillivray) hung out under pressure in the home straight.
Near the 400m, SPIRIT BEAT (R. Kerwin) which improved into a narrow run between GEEJAY (L. Tilley) and LUCIDITY (J. Baker), had to be checked when GEEJAY shifted in when racing greenly. GEEJAY then continued to shift in despite the efforts of its rider crowding LUCIDITY in onto C’MON YVONNE (C. Bryen) which was steadied.
J. Baker, the rider of LUCIDITY, stated that his mount travelled well until receiving some interference near the 400m at which point the gelding seemed to not want to stretch out and subsequently weakened in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of LUCIDITY failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer S. Rodgers reported in the days subsequent that LUCIDITY had pulled up lame in the off hind leg and would now be retired. Mr Rodgers was advised that should the racing future of the mare change that he would be required to obtain a veterinary certificate of fitness before racing again.
Race 2: Statham Cheesman Class B Handicap 1000m
GOLDEN VOGUE (J. Rudd) was slow to begin.
DISTORTED CROWN (M. McGillivray) began awkwardly.
MCQUEEN (J. Grob) threw its head in the air as the start was effected and lost considerable ground.
MCQUEEN shifted in abruptly near the 200m when pressured with the whip.
Apprentice N. Ogura (HAMMER ME PRINCE) stated that his mount travelled well until the 600m at which point it was under pressure and failed to respond to his riding and weakened in the home straight. He added that HAMMER ME PRINCE would take fitness benefit from today’s race.
When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of MCQUEEN, apprentice J. Grob stated that after losing ground at the start his mount never travelled well and was forced to pressure the horse throughout. He added that he positioned his mount on the outside of runners in an effort to keep out of the kickback from the track as per his instructions. He added that MCQUEEN wanted to lay in from the 400m and ran on fairly from that point. Trainer S. Rodgers stated that MCQUEEN can be slow to begin and that it has to be ridden aggressively to race in a forward position. He added that the horse is somewhat one paced and that after it got so far back, that it resented the kickback, which he felt explained the disappointing performance.
Race 3: Morgans Benchmark 65 Handicap 1000m
SLUMDOGMILLIONAIRE (R. Payne) was tightened for room at the start between ZIPOLITE (L. Tilley) and THE ROBBER (M. Cox).

Near the 600m SLUMDOGMILLIONAIRE laid out and was steadied from the heels of ZIPOLITE (L. Tilley). SLUMDOGMILLIONAIRE then continued to lay out for the remainder of the event.
Race 4: Ostwald Bros Open Handicap 1200m
Correct weight was delayed to afford M. McGillivray, rider of second placegetter SATCH, the opportunity of viewing the stewards' patrol footage to establish if there were grounds to lodge an objection against second placegetter JACK ’N’ ME. After viewing the videos, M. McGillivray stated that he did not wish to proceed and correct weight was declared on the Judges semaphored numbers
B. Newport, the rider of fifth placegetter BIG BAD JOEL, was reprimanded for failing to weigh in.
Race 5: St Josephs Nudgee College Benchmark 60 Handicap 1200m
